Roof of Middleton storage unit COLLAPSES as major fire burns for second day
Firefighters rushed to the scene yesterday, with crews swarming the streets outside as foul-smelling smoke seeped between doors. Today the fire is continuing to burn, with firefighters deploying cranes in their efforts to bring it under control.
A cordon was put in place yesterday, and this appears to have now been extended to cover the entire car park around the building.

Black smoke can be seen belching from upper windows in the building as firefighters deploy in "challenging conditions".
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: 'Crews have worked hard overnight to contain the fire at the commercial premises on Old Hall Street, Middleton.
'Six fire engines, the aerial unit and scorpion remain in attendance to tackle pockets of fire and make the building safe in challenging conditions.
"Road closures remain in place with nearby residents advised to keep their doors and windows shut."
A spokesperson for Storage World, the company which runs the unit, said: "Our Middleton store has suffered a serious fire. Authorities are currently in attendance and we will be contacting customers as soon as the situation has settled and we can assess the damage. This will be no later than Friday afternoon.
"Please do not contact us directly but wait for us to communicate with you, as this will allow us to manage the current situation and ensure all customers are given accurate information as soon as possible.
"More information will also be posted here when available. Please do not visit the store as it is cordoned off by the fire services and customers will not be able to access it for some time.
"We appreciate this will be a stressful and distressing situation for our customers. We are doing everything in our power to assist authorities and provide accurate information as soon as possible."

Man accused of violent and controlling behaviour — and throttling neighbour
A MAN accused of violent and controlling behaviour towards his partner, and allegedly throttling a neighbour, will have his case heard by an Isle of Wight Crown Court judge Prince Francis, of South Street, Eastbourne, East Sussex, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (July 29). He offered no plea to engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship, by continuously engaging in behaviour which was controlling or coercive, namely that on at least two occasions violence will be used towards his partner. He also faced charges of inflicting actual bodily harm against his partner, and intentional strangulation against a female neighbour. It is alleged the incidents occurred at Totland Bay, between November 30, 2023, and November 20 last year. The 40-year-old was bailed to reappear for a hearing at the Isle of Wight Crown Court, on September 1.

Clampdown on social media ads for Channel crossings unveiled
Anyone who advertises Channel crossings or fake passports on social media could face up to five years in prison under new government plans. Research suggests about 80% of migrants arriving to the UK by small boat used internet platforms during their journey - including to contact agents linked to smuggling gangs. While it is already illegal to assist illegal immigration, ministers hope the creation of a new offence will give police more powers and disrupt business models. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is also planning to introduce a fast-track scheme to tackle the asylum backlog, meaning decisions will be made within weeks. It comes as official figures show more than 25,000 people have arrived on small boats so far in 2025 - a record for this point in the year. Ms Cooper said it is "immoral" for smugglers to sell false promises online, adding: "These criminals have no issue with leading migrants to life-threatening situations using brazen tactics on social media. "We are determined to do everything we can to stop them, wherever they operate." The new offence prohibiting the online promotion of Channel crossings is set to be included in the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill already going through Parliament. Officials from the National Crime Agency already work with tech giants to remove such posts - with more than 8,000 taken offline last year. A Preston-based smuggler who was jailed for 17 years had posted videos of migrants thanking him for his help. Meanwhile, Albanian smugglers have created promotions for £12,000 "package deals" which claim to offer accommodation and a job in the UK on arrival. The Conservatives have described the measures as "too little, too late" - and say automatic deportations are the only way to tackle small boat crossings. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: "Labour still has no clear plan to deter illegal entry, no effective enforcement and no strategy to speed up removals. This is a panicked attempt to look tough after months of doing nothing." Apartment building remolded nearly a year after deadly fire; residents remember fatal night
It's been one year since flames ripped through a 4-story apartment in Elliot Park neighborhood. An investigation into the Aug. 13 fire on the 1500 block of 11th Avenue South revealed the cause to be "incendiary/intentional," according to the Minneapolis Fire Department. Responding crews found a fire on the third floor of the building and set to work rescuing residents inside. Two days after the fire, following multiple sweeps by the department, a man and a woman were found dead inside. The additional search was prompted by the property manager, who told investigators he hadn't seen one of his tenants since the fire. A woman is accused of intentionally setting a downtown Minneapolis apartment on fire last August, killing two people, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County. The 35-year-old woman from Minneapolis was charged with two felony counts of second-degree murder and three counts of first-degree arson Now, the 22-unit building is remodeled and fully occupied and equipped with a sprinkler system—something property manager David Hollman says the building did not have the night of the deadly fire. "Now, that everything has been upgraded we have a sprinkler system throughout the building," Hollman smiled. Tenants who now call it home say the remodel is beautiful but it's hard to forget what happened. "I believe if the sprinkler system would have saved lives for sure," said Jason Roers. Hollmon says he still thinks about Mr. Kerry and remembers him as respectable guy who everybody loved.
