Anti-sacrilege bill: Punjab assembly panel seeks suggestions by Aug 31
The 'Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill 2025', proposing stricter penalties — including life imprisonment — for religious sacrilege, was referred to a select committee on July 15 for examination and to seek public opinion. The 15-member committee was formally constituted by Punjab assembly speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on July 19 and held its first meeting on July 24.
According to a public notice on Thursday, the committee has sought suggestions from the public, religious institutions, non-govt organisations, experts, intellectuals, and various representatives of civil society regarding the bill.
Suggestions can be sent by the public in writing on WhatsApp number '8054495560' and on email IDs secy-vs-punjab@nic.in or pvs.legislation@gmail.com, or through the local MLA.
Under the bill, a person found guilty of sacrilege could face imprisonment of not less than 10 years, extending to a maximum of life imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 5 lakh, which can go up to Rs 10 lakh. Anyone who abets such a crime will receive the same punishment.
The panel, which is headed by AAP MLA Inderbir Singh Nijjar, will submit its report within six months.

Khatu Shyamji temple panel to rebuild PM Shri govt school
Jhunjhunu: Khatu Shyamji temple committee has stepped in to rebuild the local PM Shri govt higher secondary school after the public works department (PWD) declared the school building as dilapidated and unsafe. Once the education department grants approval, the existing building will be demolished and the temple committee will start construction of a new building. The committee plans to build 32 classrooms over 25,000 square feet, including smart classes, a science lab, a library, a playground, security guard rooms, and other facilities. ATM screw left loose after servicing, duo return to steal Rs12 lakh
Ghaziabad : Two ATM servicing staff were arrested for allegedly stealing over Rs 12 lakh from a machine one of them had previously accused, Suraj Narayan (33) and Sonu Rajput (34), both residents off Delhi, were nabbed near Vijay Nagar flyover on Saturday following a tip-off. Police recovered Rs 10.2 lakh in cash, three mobile phones, and a motorcycle used in the theft. According to DCP (city) Dhaval Jaiswal, the two men worked for different private companies that maintain ATM machines—Suraj with Tech Byte Company and Sonu with NCR Company. They met through Sonu's brother last year and initially collaborated to buy and resell ATM parts. Over time, that partnership evolved into a criminal conspiracy. Their plan began two months ago, targeting an ATM in Jassipura maintained by Sonu's company. While repairing the machine, Sonu deliberately left the latch's screws loose and later requested to be transferred from the site to avoid suspicion. The theft was then carried out over seven days. The theft was discovered on July 25 when a technician, called to repair the unresponsive ATM, found the cash missing. The machine had been loaded with cash on July 16, but no transactions occurred afterward. Police are scanning CCTV footage from July 16 to 25 to confirm the suspects' movements.
