Dodgers activate Max Muncy from injured list, but also put Tommy Edman on the shelf
Muncy has been out since July 2, missing nearly five weeks with a bone bruise in his knee after a collision on a tag play during a game against the Chicago White Sox. The veteran slugger had been on a monthlong roll at the time of his injury, boosting his OPS to .832 with 13 homers and 55 RBIs.
Muncy returned more quickly than the initial six-week projection for his recovery. He was batting fifth and playing third base at Dodger Stadium on Monday night when Los Angeles opened a homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals.

'He's put in a lot of work to get back with this timeline,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'Getting him back lengthens and strengthens our lineup.'
But just when Muncy is healthy enough to return, the NL West-leading Dodgers are losing Edman after he aggravated his injured right ankle.
Edman left a game in Boston last week after apparently spraining his ankle while running the bases, and he came out of the Dodgers' game against Tampa Bay on Sunday with pain from running the bases again.
'Don't know how long it's going to be, but I do think that he'll be back at some point,' Roberts said. 'The main thing is when he gets back, how we can make sure that this doesn't happen again. It's kind of a ligament strain, tendons, whatever it is.'
Edman also missed time in May with a sprained ankle. Last year's NLCS MVP is batting .228 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs this season.
Edman joins the lengthy list of Dodgers hoping to return soon from injuries to bolster the defending World Series champions' repeat bid. Los Angeles didn't make a bold move at the trade deadline last week, deciding to roll with its current roster while aiming for full health in October.
Utilityman Kiké Hernández went out last month with a sprained left elbow, and he isn't close to returning despite undergoing multiple procedures including platelet-rich plasma therapy and cortisone shots.

'We're not there yet, as far as worrying the season is lost' for Hernández, Roberts said.
Other injury news is more encouraging: Second baseman Hyeseong Kim is swinging a bat and taking grounders in anticipation of returning from left shoulder bursitis as early as this weekend, while reliever Tanner Scott will throw another batting practice session soon in his recovery from left elbow inflammation.
Roki Sasaki is still on the injured list on his bobblehead night Monday. The rookie right-hander has been out since May 8 with a right shoulder injury, but he will throw three live innings Friday after hitting mid-90s velocity in his most recent mound session. If his arm continues to feel good, he will get a minor league rehab assignment next week, Roberts said.

Raiders trade CB Jakorian Bennett to Eagles for DT Thomas Booker IV, AP source says
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders are trading cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade is pending physicals on both players. Bennett, drafted in the fourth round two years ago out of Maryland, started seven games for the Raiders last season before being shut down because of a torn labrum that required surgery. He played well as a cover cornerback, but Bennett was running with the second and third teams this training camp under first-year coach Pete Carroll. At 5-foot-10, Bennett doesn't fit Carroll's preference of playing taller cornerbacks. Six-foot Eric Stokes and 6-2 rookie Darien Porter have been competing with the starters this camp. Booker started one game and played in all 17 last season for the Eagles. He also appeared in four postseason games for the Super Bowl champions. But Booker, a 2022 fifth-round draft pick of Houston, was fifth on the depth chart at a deep defensive tackle position this season. The Raiders released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on July 24 over a dispute over a recovery plan for a broken foot from last season. The club is attempting to void the remaining $35.25 million of Wilkins' deal, and he has filed a grievance with the NFL Players Association. Alonso pulls within one of Strawberry, but Mets fall to Guardians after comeback bid
NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso hit his 251st career homer Monday night to pull within one of Darryl Strawberry's New York Mets franchise record, but the Cleveland Guardians earned a 7-6, 10-inning win after squandering a five-run lead. Gabriel Arias' 440-foot, three-run homer to left-center ended a five-run sixth inning against Sean Manaea, who surrendered RBI singles to David Fry and Carlos Santana earlier in the inning. Alonso, starting at designated hitter for the 59th time in his career, hit a 388-foot blast to left-center in the bottom half against Slade Cecconi. The slugger has three homers in his last four games. Alonso had his fourth hit, an RBI single, in the eighth, before Mark Vientos delivered the game-tying sacrifice fly. Cade Smith (4-4) escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth. Top-seeded Zverev beats defending champ Popyrin to reach semifinals in Toronto
TORONTO (AP) — Top-seeded Alexander Zverev rallied to defeat No. 18 Alexei Popyrin of Australia 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-3 on Monday to reach the semifinals of the National Bank Open. Zverev, the 2017 tournament champion, will face either No. 11 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia or No. 26 Alex Michelsen of the U.S. Zverev, a German who is ranked No. 3, advanced to his 75th ATP Tour semifinal. He is looking for his 25th tournament title and eighth in an ATP 1000 Masters tournament. The other quarterfinals are Tuesday. Second-seeded Taylor Fritz will take on No. 6 Andrey Rublev of Russia, while No. 4 Ben Shelton is slated to meet No. 9 Alex de Minaur of Australia. Both semifinals go Wednesday ahead of Thursday's title match. Popyrin took the first set when his gentle backhand volley after a long rally grazed the top of the net and dropped for the winning point — much to the delight of his fans, including one with an inflatable yellow kangaroo. Zverev has two tournament wins on clay this year, and is the highest-ranked player competing in a Toronto field lacking some significant star power after Sinner, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 6 Novak Djokovic all skipped the hard-court event.
