TikTok owner reportedly building its own XR glasses — rivaling Meta

Tom's Guide15-07-2025
TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, may be working on a new pair of mixed reality glasses. According to a new report from The Information, this set of goggles looks set to take on the likes of Meta's Project Orion to provide a full XR computing experience.
There's no details on a release date as of yet for the goggles, codenamed 'Swan,' but given this is a make or break year for Meta, this report could cause a stir for Zuckerberg & Co. Here's what we know.
Details are thin on the ground, but we do know a few things. First of all, these mixed reality goggles are being built by Pico — the VR startup that is owned by ByteDance.
This is the company who worked on the Pico 4 VR headset, which I reviewed for Laptop Mag, and in short, the hardware was good but it was a barren landscape of lacking software support.
But it seems like after the canceled launch of Pico 5 in late 2023, the TikTok owner is taking a different approach here, by shrinking the tech down into a pair of goggles. Specifically, the claim is these will weigh around 0.28 pounds — similar to the Bigscreen Beyond VR headset.
In terms of what will power it, Pico is working on 'specialized chips for the device that will process data from its sensors to minimize the lag or latency between what a user sees in AR and their physical movements.'
All of this looks set to be offset from adding weight to the headset by using a puck connected to the device, a la Meta's Project Orion. For the puck itself, we've heard conflicting reports on whether it will be wireless or wired, so we can't say for sure.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
But this does steer in a similar direction to what we're seeing from Meta's new mixed-reality device, as we're seeing reports that the Meta Quest 4 has been postponed to 2027 in favor of an ultralight headset with a puck.
One thing is clear. Bulky VR headsets have had their time in the sun, and companies are working overtime to get all of this tech shrunk down into something that is the size of a pair of glasses.
You see that with Meta reportedly launching its next-gen smart specs with a display soon, Snap launching its next-gen AR specs in 2026, Apple being 'hell-bent' on launching its own glasses, and Xreal's Android XR specs.
It's a market that is heating up fast, and ByteDance is another juggernaut throwing its hat into the ring. Now there's just the pesky issue of whether these could be sold in the U.S. — given the whole potential TikTok ban thing.

Data continues to go back to Chinese servers even with telemetry off Hardware and OS specs, mouse/keyboard activity and more Trae memory usage is 3x higher than Cursor A developer has taken to GitHub to warn that ByteDance's Trae AI-powered IDE has been collecting data from users and sending it to the Chinese company's servers. It was found that extensive network activity continues despite users disabling telemetry in settings, with around 500 network calls observed in seven minutes, equating to around 26MB of data being transferred. The data was being routed to ByteDance servers on the byteoversea[.]com domain, with a broad range of system and project information potentially at risk of being collected by the company. ByteDance's Trae IDE could be collecting data According to the report, ByteDance was collecting system information like hardware specs and OS details, usage patterns, performance metrics, project and file path information, unique persistent identifiers and mouse/keyboard activity, among some other elements. The developer also found that ByteDance has the potential to enable/disable feature or modify functionality remotely without pushing updates. Marketed as a free alternative to the likes of Cursor, Trae uses GPT-4o and Claude-3.5-Sonnet to help users boost productivity, but the app was found to use around three times as much memory as Cursor (and 6.3x VS Code). The biggest privacy and security concerns center and data sovereignty, with major alarm bells ringing about ByteDance's persistent collection of information even after users change their preferences. The developer was also concerned about the amount of unnecessary system information collected in those logs, and the fact that it was all being sent to Chinese infrastructure. ByteDance customers also share transparency concerns, with the IDE failing to properly disclose the data collected and the telemetry toggle appearing to be non-functional. TechRadar Pro has asked ByteDance to respond to these allegations, but we did not receive an immediate response. Proven Track Record Drives Confidence The strong industry support builds on Access Advance 's proven track record administering the licensing of over 30,000 patents in the HEVC Advance Patent Pool and the VVC Advance Patent Pool, which have gained support from a substantial majority of video codec implementers and patent owners globally. "The rapid adoption by industry leaders validates our collaborative approach," said Peter Moller, CEO of Access Advance. "The VDP Pool successfully balances implementers' need for fair and balanced royalty rates, predictable costs and operational flexibility with patent owners' need for fair compensation to support continued investment in innovation. This broad group of licensors and licensees demonstrates that the industry recognizes the value of working together to create a fair and balanced program.' With royalty rates now published and licensing agreements available, Access Advance expects continued rapid adoption as companies seek to simplify their patent licensing strategies. The collaborative framework established by the VDP Pool represents a new model for standards-essential patent licensing that prioritizes industry-wide innovation over individual patent monetization strategies. Meta Stock Reaches Record After Reporting Quarterly Earnings

Meta reported $47.52 billion in revenue for its second quarter ending in June on Wednesday, a 22% year-over-year increase and higher than the $44.8 billion analysts expected. On Thursday, Meta stock reached a record high of $784.75, surpassing the previous record close of $738.09 reached on June 30. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated on a call on Wednesday with analysts that growth in the quarter was caused by the use of Meta's AI technology, which allowed the company to drive more advertising revenue. Nicola Mendelsohn, head of global business group at Meta, echoed Zuckerberg's remarks. In a LinkedIn post on Wednesday, Mendelsohn wrote that the quarter's "strong performance was driven largely by AI, unlocking greater efficiency and gains across our ads system." Related: Mark Zuckerberg Uses an Easy But Powerful Formula to Keep Facebook Relevant — Here's How It Works At the time of writing, Meta's market value was $1.96 trillion, up about 11.5% on Thursday morning. One contributor to Meta's surge in revenue was smart glasses. Meta released the Ray-Ban Meta frames in partnership with eyewear company EssilorLuxottica in October 2023. The device allows users to take photos, interact with Meta AI, and make calls. The glasses have sold more than two million pairs since launch, with EssilorLuxottica revealing in its earnings report earlier this week that sales of the frames more than tripled for the first half of the year compared to the same time last year. The unexpected success of the Ray-Ban Metas prompted Meta to launch another pair, this time in partnership with Oakley, last month. Related: Mark Zuckerberg Revealed His Vision for Smart Glasses at Meta Connect — and It Involves Holograms: 'Beginning of a Big Thing' During Meta's second-quarter earnings call, Zuckerberg predicted that smart glasses would replace other gadgets as the "primary computing device," becoming the main method users interact with AI. "I continue to think that glasses are basically going to be the ideal form factor for AI," Zuckerberg said on the call. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wears the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Photo by Gilbert Flores/Variety via Getty Images While Meta brought in more revenue than expected last quarter, the tech giant is also projecting to spend more on AI expenses. Meta stated in the earnings report Wednesday that capital expenditures, including AI-related costs and payments on financial leases, would cost at least $66 billion this year, up from a previous forecast of at least $64 billion. Expenditures for the quarter were $17 billion. Related: Here's How Meta's AI Superintelligence Effort Is Different From 'Others in the Industry,' According to Mark Zuckerberg's New Blog Post Before the earnings report was revealed, Zuckerberg penned a blog post about his vision for AI — to bring superintelligence, or AI that surpasses human intellect, into the hands of every individual. The Meta CEO said he aims to give people "greater agency" to shape the world, contrasting his approach with "others in the industry" who believe that AI should first automate all work before humanity lives on a measured amount of its output. Meta has heavily invested in superintelligence, offering new hires up to $200 million in compensation packages. Last month, Meta announced a new Superintelligence Labs team, assembling talent from AI companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic to work on the effort.
