MACC remands 4 in Sabah over false claims worth RM5 million

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded four people, including two company owners, on suspicion of submitting false claims to procure work permit printing services worth around RM5 million. Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus issued a four-day remand order until July 5 for three men and a woman following an application by MACC in Kota Kinabalu yesterday. Kosmo quoted a source as saying that the suspects, in their 40s and 50s, were arrested between 6pm and 7pm on June 30 when they went to give their statements at the Sabah MACC office. 'All four suspects, two of whom are a former administrator and assistant administrator of a local oil company, are believed to have committed the offences from 2019 to 2023. 'The two suspects are believed to have conspired with the other two, both company owners, to submit false claims to procure permit printing services worth around RM5 million,' said the source. The suspects were arrested in Op Effingo, an operation by MACC's special operations division. On June 30, the division raided 10 locations around Kota Kinabalu and the Klang Valley, including several companies and the suspects' residences and offices. 'MACC seized 22 bank accounts, including an Amanah Saham Bumiputera account with about RM2 million, and around RM14,000 in foreign currencies. 'MACC also seized three luxury vehicles worth RM1.3 million and three mobile phones,' said the source. Zamri Zainul Abidin, senior director of MACC's special operations division, confirmed the arrests. Engineer pleads not guilty to soliciting RM13,000 bribe
BUTTERWORTH: An engineer pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Thursday (July 3) to a charge of soliciting a RM13,000 bribe from a company director three years ago Mohamed Rizal Salim, 40, entered the plea before Judge Zulhazmi Abdullah after the charge was read out to him. He is accused of requesting a bribe from HHSB Enterprise director Toh Kean Hin as an inducement, in his capacity as a Grade J41 civil engineer at the Irrigation and Drainage Department, to approve procurement works in favour of the company. The alleged offence took place at the department's Barat Daya District Engineer's Office on March 25, 2022. He was charged under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and faces punishment under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Noor Azura Zulkiflee proposed bail at RM15,000. However, defence counsel Aqmarul Aqil Ismail, requested a lower amount, citing his client's financial obligations. "My client earns RM6,000 a month and supports his unemployed wife and four children aged between two and 11. He also pays RM1,300 in rent for his own home and RM450 for his mother's, who is suffering from uterine cancer and diabetes," he said. The court set bail at RM10,000 with conditions, requiring the accused to report monthly to the MACC and surrender his passport, with the case set for mention on August 8. – Bernama

Two children among five injured in Russia's air attack on Odesa, Ukraine says

A multi-storey residential building and other civilian infrastructure were damaged, regional governor Oleh Kiper said on the Telegram messaging app. Six apartments were completely destroyed, another 36 were partially damaged, he said. "The children, who were poisoned by combustion products, were hospitalized," Kiper said. The other three injured people, all adults, received medical aid on the site. The full scale of the attack was not immediately known. There was no immediate comment from Russia about the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes during the war that Russia launched against Ukraine more than three years ago. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine posted on its Facebook page photos showing rescuers carrying children in the dark out of a multi-storey apartment building on fire and firefighters fighting the blaze. Ex-national cyclist claims trial to sexually harassing minor

AMPANG: Former national road cyclist Nor Effandy Rosli has claimed trial in the sessions court here to a charge of sexually harassing a teenage girl last year. The 1998 Commonwealth Games silver medallist pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before judge Norshila Kamarudin. Nor Effandy, 58, was accused of committing harassment with sexual intent by massaging the victim's thighs, breast, and buttocks at the Fun D Cycle Point bicycle store in Taman Desa Keramat. He was the victim's cycling coach when the incident allegedly took place in June 2024, when the girl was 15 years old. The charge was framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read with Section 16(1) of the same Act for being in a relationship of trust with the victim. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a whipping, if convicted. Section 16(1) of the Act provides for an additional jail term of no more than five years and at least two strokes of the rotan. During mitigation, his lawyer Hamdan Hamzah requested bail of RM5,000, saying the accused, who works as an assistant enforcement officer with Kuala Lumpur City Hall, only earns around RM5,000 a month. Hamdan added that the accused is his family's breadwinner and has four children. Deputy public prosecutor Nadiah Malek Fauzie however suggested that bail be fixed at RM15,000. Norshila set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and ordered Nor Effandy to surrender his passport to the court.
