‘It's a fact' – Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish gives major update on Eagles being kicked out of Europa League

The Irish Sun16-07-2025
CRYSTAL PALACE will appeal Uefa's decision to remove them from the Europa League next season.
The Eagles earned a spot in Europe's second tier following their 1-0 FA Cup final victory over
Manchester
City in May - however last week they were officially banned and relegated to the Conference League.

At the time of the final, now-former Palace co-owner John Textor held stakes in both the south
London
club and Lyon, who are in the
Europa League
next
season after finishing sixth and
Ligue 1
.
Eagles fans have already begun
Speaking on
court
for arbitration and, you know, we're very hopeful. We think we've got great legal arguments.
'We don't think this is the right decision by any means. We know unequivocally that John didn't have decisive influence over the club.

'We know we proved that beyond all reasonable doubt because it's a fact.'
Uefa rules state no owner or co-owner can have a controlling interest in more than one club competing in the same European competition during the same season. Palace dispute that Textor did not have sufficient enough control.
As it stands, Palace will be replaced in the Europa League by
Nottingham Forest
, who finished seventh last term.
Forest will be £3.9million better off as a result of the decision.

Parish continued: 'We feel that there are a lot of very genuine mitigating circumstances and more than enough wriggle room to put us in the competition.
'It does look bad. This is the dream right? This is what keeps
football
alive.

'This is why everybody goes, because they think one day they might win a cup and they might qualify for

'These things can be defining moments for a club and completely change the course of
history
forever.
'Hopefully when we go to CAS we get the right answer.
'We get the written version of (the ruling) with the detail then apparently the appeal is 10 days.'
In a statement, Uefa said its Club Financial Control Body confirmed the decision by French financial chiefs had cleared Lyon's path to take up their place in the Europa League.

The governing body said: 'Consequently, the CFCB pursued the assessment of the documentation submitted by Lyons and
'For this reason the CFCB First Chamber decided: To accept Lyons' admission to the 2025/26 Europa League.
'And to reject Crystal Palace's admission to the 2025/26 Uefa Europa League and to accept Crystal Palace's admission to the 2025/26 Uefa Conference League.'

Shels bounce back with victory at the Showgrounds

Shelbourne extended their unbeaten SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division run to five games with a 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds, bouncing back from a disappointing European performance mid-week. Ali Coote and Sean Boyd were the goalscorers as Joey O'Brien's side moved to within three points of Drogheda United in fourth. A bad night for Sligo was made worse with six minutes to go when goalkeeper Sam Sargeant was sent off as he was judged to have handled the ball outside the box by referee Rob Harvey, although replays suggest it may have been on the line. Unbeaten in their last five league games, the Bit O'Red were one of the league's form sides coming into this tie. A win against the 2024 Premier Division champions would have brought Russell's men level on points with Galway United who were beaten on Friday by the league's bottom side Cork City. Russell lost both Jake Doyle-Hayes and Francely Lomboto this week, with both players departing the club, while Ciaron Harkin joined from Derry City and was named on the bench for this game. Shels, who had a gruelling trip home from Kazakhstan mid-week where they were in European action, named Milan Mbeng after the French man signed from Cork City. Cian Kavanagh's miss on ten minutes was the talking point in an otherwise uneventful first-half, with neither side bringing the entertainment that may have been expected. The former St Patrick's Athletic striker just needed a slight touch to divert the ball past Speel in the Shels goals after Will Fitzgerald's free-kick was knocked on in the direction of Kavanagh in front of goal. That was as close as either side would come to opening the scoring in the first-half, but Shels found the net two minutes into the second-half. Coote got a hold of possession in the middle, and pushed his way past a couple of Sligo players before driving into the top corner with Sam Sargeant well beaten in the Sligo goals. Paddy McClean almost had Sligo back on level terms but the Derry man couldn't keep his header down from Owen Elding's cross as Sligo battled hard to find an equaliser. John Russell responded to his side's inability to break Shels down by switching up their approach, in truth it was game over on 77 minutes when Boyd added a second for Shels. As the home side failed to clear the ball from their defence, John Martin picked out the free Boyd in front of goal, and all he needed to do was poke it in past Sargeant for 2-0. There was further controversy, though, as the home side were reduced to ten when referee Rob Harvey gave Sargeant a straight red card for handling the ball outside the box, but replays show that Sargeant looked to be on the line as he handled the ball. That result leaves Sligo in ninth place, three points off Galway in eighth, while Shels are just three points off Drogheda United who occupy fourth spot. Sligo Rovers: Sam Sargeant, Conor Reynolds (Wilson Waweru, 67), Paddy McClean, Ollie Denham, Kyle McDonagh (John Mahon, 67), James McManus, Seb Quirk, Jad Hakiki, Owen Elding, Cian Kavanagh (Conor Walsh, 85), Will Fitzgerald Shelbourne: Wessel Speel, Milan Mbeng (Sean Gannon, 68), Lewis Temple, Paddy Barrett, Kameron Ledwidge, Kerr McInroy, JJ Lunney, James Norris (Sean Moore, 82), Ali Coote (John Martin, 68), Harry Wood (Ellis Chapman, 82), Mipo Odubeko (Sean Boyd, 59) Attendance: 3,167

Home hero Ferrand-Prevot in epic climb to Tour de France lead

FRENCH RIDER Pauline Ferrand-Prevot climbed to a magnificent solo triumph at the women's Tour de France on Saturday to take over the lead of the race with one stage remaining. Olympic mountain bike champion Ferrand-Prevot of Visma, who joined the road race scene last year, attacked from 10km out with huge crowds of home supporters on the mountainside cheering her along. Visma rider Prevot-Ferrand now leads the overall standings by a comfortable two minutes and 37 seconds from Australia's Sarah Gigante, albeit with a last daunting mountain stage on Sunday to seal the deal. Advertisement Meanwhile, Lara Gillespie was 64th, Mia Griffin came 113th and Fiona Mangan finished 125th. In the general rankings, Gillespie is 94th, Griffin is 100th and Mangan sits in 114th place. 'I just tried to go as fast as possible. If I came back to road cycling it was in an effort to win this race so I made the right choice,' said the 33-year-old. 'I wanted to have as big a gap as possible, it's not over yet but I'm very happy with what we did today.' Gigante of AG was second atop la Madeleine at 1min 45sec, while LTK's Niamh Fisher-Black was third at 2min 15sec. 'I was dreaming of winning this race,' said Gigante. 'But Pauline was magnificent.' Overnight leader Kim Le Court-Pienaar sacrificed her ride to support Gigante, who cried when mentioning this after the race. No Frenchman has won the 21-day men's Tour de France since 1985 when Bernard Hinault won his fifth; now Ferrand-Prevot can become the first French rider to win the modern women's Tour de France in its fourth edition. – © AFP 2025

'I need a little bit of change' - Son announces Spurs departure

TOTTENHAM CAPTAIN SON Heung-min has revealed he will leave the club this summer. Son has spent the last decade at Spurs and achieved his goal of silverware in May when he helped the Premier League team to Europa League success with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. It ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club and South Korea captain Son explained his decision to target a 'fresh challenge' during a press conference in his home country ahead of Tottenham's pre-season friendly with Newcastle on Sunday. After Spurs arrived in Seoul on Friday, Son – following a remarkable 454 appearances and 173 goals for the north London club – confirmed his desire to depart this summer, with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC leading the race for his signature, the PA news agency understands. Advertisement Son told a press conference: 'Before we start, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer. 'Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision. 'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career, such amazing memories. It was so hard to make this decision. He continued: 'I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change – 10 years is a long time. 'I came to north London as a kid, 23-years-old, such a young age. I leave the club as a grown man, a very proud man. 'I want to say thanks to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept and respect that.' New Tottenham head coach Frank confirmed Son would start and be captain in Sunday's friendly with Newcastle at Seoul's World Cup Stadium. It could be Son's final appearance for Spurs, despite the UEFA Super Cup fixture with Paris St Germain in Udine on the horizon on August 13. Frank said: 'It's very clear that Sonny will start and lead the team out as captain. If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending.' Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and after a tricky debut campaign, he quickly became a fan favourite and subsequently a modern-day Premier League great due to his consistency and personality, clinching the golden boot award in the 2022-23 season, but he is now set to exit after 10 years in north London.
