Four people die after plane crashes at airport
Images posted on social media showed a plume of fire and black smoke coming from the crash site, while witnesses described seeing a 'fireball'.
Zeusch Aviation, based at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands, confirmed its SUZ1 flight had been 'involved in an accident' at the airport.
A statement said the company was 'actively supporting the authorities with the investigation', adding: 'Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected.'
Zeusch Aviation's website says the plane can be used for medical flights to transport patients or organs. It has also been deployed for aerial mapping flights.
The plane had flown from the Greek capital Athens to Pula in Croatia on Sunday before heading to Southend. It was scheduled to return to Lelystad on Sunday night.
The airport announced on Sunday night it was closed until further notice, with all arriving and departing flights cancelled. Passengers booked to travel on Monday were advised to contact their airline.
There were scheduled to be 20 easyJet flights and two Eastern Airways flights departing from or arriving at the airport on Monday.
EasyJet said the company's remaining flights to and from the airport had been 'diverted to alternative airports or are no longer able to operate', according to Sky.
Southend Airport yesterday (Sunday) said: 'Our thoughts are with those affected by today's events and all passengers impacted by this disruption.
'We will restart flight operations as soon as possible and will continue to update the public on developments.'
Following the crash, Essex Police said they were alerted shortly before 4pm on Sunday to 'reports of a collision involving one 12-metre plane' at the airport, calling it a 'serious incident'.

Warning to UK holidaymakers after Greece announces 'shut down' as temperatures soar
Temperatures are currently soaring across the popular tourist hotspot. UK holidaymakers heading to Greece this summer are being warned after the country announced a shutdown in areas popular with tourists. As the country battles a severe heatwave, authorities took the decision to close certain (literal) hotspots. Iconic Athens landmarks the Acropolis will be closed and outdoor work in parts of the country will also be halted. The ancient monument will be off limits until 5pm on Tuesday for the 'safety of workers and visitors, owing to high temperatures. ' According to the Greek Ministry of Labour outdoor work will also be halted from 12pm to 5pm in multiple regions, including islands popular with UK holidaymakers, reports Birmingham Live. Michalis Keskinidis, a 43-year-old courier told the AFP news agency: "Days with a heatwave make my job more difficult. 'We drink a lot of water, use electrolytes, and take breaks whenever possible.' According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - the UN body responsible for assessing climate change - it is now "unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land". Climate scientist Professor Ed Hawkins from Reading University warns that "1C of global warming does NOT mean that heatwaves 'just' get hotter by 1C. Over large parts of the UK, global warming means that heatwaves are 3-4C warmer". Climate projections from the Met Office indicate that "hot spells will become more frequent in our future climate, particularly over the southeast of the UK. Temperatures are projected to rise in all seasons, but the heat would be most intense in summer." The BBC Weather team says: "Friday's update could provide more clarity about the most likely conditions for next week and give a further outlook for the period after that which might indicate if we are going to see cooler conditions towards the end of July and into August." Hollywood stars spotted in Highlands ahead of The Odyssey filming
The couple, who play Spiderman and MJ in the superhero franchise, were photographed in Inverness before they head to Moray to film scenes for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Holland was seen holding a cup from XOKO, a popular cafe. He was later pictured arriving onto the set at Burghead, before heading off on a fast boat to filming location which is further along the coast. The set for Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster has already been captured being constructed at a castle and one of the main stars, Matt Damon, was photographed in the nearby village of Cullen. Nolan's newest movie, The Odyssey, will star his long-term friend Damon, Holland, Zendaya, alongside Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron. The film follows the journey of the ancient Greek king of Ithaca back home to his wife following the Trojan War. It is Nolan's most expensive film of his career, according to reports. Filming for the movie – which is due to be released in cinemas on July 16 next year – started in February in Morocco. It has also taken place in Greece and Sicily. Both Buckie and Cullen are expected to feature in the film.
