TMC (TMC) Falls on Uncertainties from Deep-Sea Mining Talks

TMC dropped its share prices for a third straight day, losing 4.42 percent to close at $6.27 apiece as investors continued to unload positions amid uncertainties in the resumption of deep-sea mining talks.
This is after the International Seabed Authority (ISA) announced the revival of negotiations on the controversies surrounding deep-sea mining, following President Donald Trump's order last April to fast-track permits for deep-sea mining even beyond US waters, taking advantage of its non-membership in the organization.
Sentiment was further dampened by TMC, the metals company Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TMC) bypassing of the ISA after its immediate submission of its first offshore license application, despite being a Canadian company and with Canada being a member of the organization.
In recent news, TMC the metals company Inc. (NASDAQ:TMC) earned an 'outperform' rating from Wedbush and an $11 price target, a significant upgrade from its 'neutral' stance and $6 price target previously.

According to Wedbush, the upgrade was based on a stronger US government from President Donald Trump's executive order in April, 'Unleashing America's Offshore Critical Minerals and Resources,' which could allow TMC the metals company Inc. (NASDAQ:TMC) to bypass the UN-affiliated International Seabed Authority and ramp up production in the Clarion Clipperton Zone.

Success Of Ryan Poles, Ben Johnson Is Tied To Caleb Williams

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles, right, speaks as head coach Ben Johnson, left, listens ... More before introducing new players Drew Dalman and Dayo Odeyingbo at Halas Hall on March 13, 2025, in Lake Forest, Illinois. (Chris Sweda/Chicago Tribune/Tribune News Service via Getty Images) Patience has indeed proven to be a virtue with Ryan Poles, the Chicago Bears' fourth-year general manager. He was hired for a four-year term in 2022 and is being rewarded with a contract extension that runs through 2029. This gives Poles an eight-year commitment from Bears ownership and president Kevin Warren despite his having produced a 15-36 record in his first two seasons. His predecessor, Ryan Pace, had a 48-65 record over seven seasons, including a 22-27 mark in his final three. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Friday Poles is receiving an extension that gives him the same timing on his deal as head coach Ben Johnson, who Poles hired in January after making Matt Eberflus the Bears' first-ever coach fired in midseason. Poles had hired Eberflus on his third day on the job after inheriting a coaching search that had been run at the same time Chairman George McCaskey was searching for a new GM to replace Pace. It was a dubious process that did little other than to allow the Bears to assemble talent through the draft in the Eberflus years, biding their time in hope of becoming relevant again. That time arrives in 2025, with the Bears hoping for at least a winning season in the deep NFC North. The success of quarterback Caleb Williams, who was taken with the first overall pick in the '24 draft, is critical for both Poles and Johnson, who chose to sign with Chicago after earning respect while building an explosive offense behind Jared Goff in Detroit. Poles has proven to be a skilled negotiator in seemingly upgrading the roster. He rebuilt the offensive line after Williams was sacked 68 times in his rookie season, adding Chiefs All-Pro guard Joe Thuney at the cost of only a fourth-round pick while also signing free agent center Drew Dalman and trading for guard Jonah Jackson. His signature move was the trading of the first overall pick to Carolina in '23, which at the time committed a third season to struggling quarterback Justin Fields, whom Poles had inherited from Pace. Rather than draft Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud, he took wide receiver D.J. Moore and a package of draft pick to allow the Panthers to move from ninth to first overall. Poles turned those picks into Williams, tackle Darnell Wright, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, punter Tory Taylor and wide receiver Luther Burden III. "Yeah, I feel pretty good," Poles said after selecting Burden in the second round last April. 'I think it's worked out for us.' The moves have certainly worked well for Poles, who had worked in the Chiefs' front office before being hired by McCaskey. The hope is they also work out for the franchise and its fans. Leila Rahimi, the insightful talk show host for WSCR, summed up the feeling in Chicago nicely. 'You just got paid for winning an offseason, not a season,' Rahimi said. 'I want to see a season.'

Advocates call for more transparency in home insurance rates amid rise in extreme weather

As home insurance costs rise sharply amid increasing extreme weather events, one advocacy group is calling for more transparency from Ontario's financial services regulator into the increasing rates. Investors for Paris Compliance says the rising frequency of floods and wildfires due to climate change is pushing rates toward unaffordable levels, and the province's home insurance sector needs to be investigated. "There's been open-ended rate hikes, while at the same time there's been shrinking coverage due to the escalating costs of climate change," said Kiera Taylor, senior policy analyst at Investors for Paris Compliance. "There's a lot of ripple effects, which really contribute to an affordability crisis and just more general instability in our financial system," she said. Data shows, in 2024, insured losses from severe weather across the country exceeded $9 billion, said Brett Weltman, spokesperson for the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). That figure is nearly three times higher than insured losses recorded in 2023, and more than 12 times the annual average of losses between 2001 and 2010, he said. "Year over year, severe weather losses are rising at an alarming, exponential rate," he said in an email to CBC Toronto. Investors for Paris Compliance has made a submission to the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) — an agency of the government of Ontario that protects the rights of consumers — asking for more transparency, including considering public disclosure of rate changes as is done with auto insurance. The advocacy group is also asking the FSRA to make climate risk data public, such as flood maps, which insurers use to price risk. Currently, consumers only have access to public flood risk mapping which is often out of date, Taylor said. The FSRA said in a statement its authority under Ontario's Insurance Act includes licensing insurance agents, setting conduct standards and approving auto insurance rates — but not home insurance rates, as home insurance is not mandatory in Ontario. But Taylor said the FSRA can require insurers to publicly disclose rate changes, even if it doesn't have the authority to regulate or cap them. WATCH | Questions about Toronto's climate readiness follow 2024 flooding: Still, the FSRA says it has significantly increased its oversight of the property and casualty insurance sector. This sector includes insurance protecting people and businesses from financial losses due to property damage, theft, natural disasters and legal claims, according to the agency. The FSRA published a report in June 2024 reviewing home insurance claims practices across the top 20 insurers in Ontario. The agency said it identified "several areas of concern" that were addressed directly with insurers. These included irregular or insufficient communication with customers, and some companies not adequately tracking the reasons why claims are denied. Homeowners need better access to risk information, Weltman said. The IBC is working with the FSRA "to determine mechanisms to share risk information," he said. He said the insurance industry is also collaborating with the federal government to develop a flood risk portal. But Taylor said without an analysis of Ontarians' threshold to continue paying for ongoing open ended hikes, the province could end up with a large portion of households unable to afford insurance at all. "We need to see where the system breaks: how many homes, and at what price of insurance," she said. Ontario home insurance rates climbed 84 per cent between 2014 and 2024, according to analysis by My Choice Financial Inc., while for Canada as a whole rates climbed 76 per cent in the decade. The increases came despite Statistics Canada data showing inflation of 28 per cent over the period. According to home insurance premiums are rapidly increasing across the province, and flood risk plays a huge role. Last year, Toronto was pummelled with close to 100 millimetres of rain in one day, which left dozens of homeowners dealing with insurance claims for flooded basements. Similar extreme weather events are only expected to continue due to climate change. "We've seen in 2025 rates are already up around 5 per cent in the first quarter," said David Mayer, director of insurance markets at "So continue to shop your insurance before your renewal arrives and see if you can get a better deal." If a consumer has filed a recent claim related to severe weather, Weltman said they should reach out to their insurance representative, who may be able to offer suggestions on steps they can take to better protect their property in the short-term. But he said all levels of government should work together to strengthen municipal capacity to deal with natural disasters. This includes improving where and how building happens, such as by avoiding floodplains and using resilient materials, he said. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance said the department is working with FSRA "to monitor the situation closely and ensure homeowners are receiving the best possible options." "We are also in regular contact with the insurance industry to discuss options to support homeowner insurance," Scott Blodgett said via email.
