Super Junior kicks off 20th anniversary year with new reality show

Korea Herald07-03-2025
Super Junior is launching its highly anticipated 20th-anniversary project with a brand-new reality entertainment program, 'Super Junior's Super TV.'
The 10-episode show will premiere March 21, airing every Friday on TVing, a local streaming platform, and Mnet, a CJ ENM-owned music cable channel.
For international fans, 'Super Junior's Super TV' will be available via multiple global streaming platforms, including Kocowa+ (North America, Europe, Oceania), TrueVisions Now (Thailand), friDay Video (Taiwan), and Channel K on Prime Video India (India).
The program takes a unique 'hardcore variety' approach, tailored specifically for Super Junior. Now entering their 20th year, the members will take on the challenge of escaping a world built entirely with their own words — where every statement they make materializes into reality.
The show promises a lineup of unpredictable and dynamic content, including a parody of the popular dating show 'I Am Solo,' a game-filled sauna experience, a housewarming party at a member's home and even a travel adventure — all fueled by Super Junior's signature chemistry, honed over two decades.
Beyond variety shows, Super Junior has an extensive lineup of projects planned for their 20th anniversary celebrations, including an exhibition, new album release, pop-up stores and a concert tour.

Star street dancer Aiki finds new expression in musical debut ‘Frida'

Aiki is best known for her breakout on Mnet's 'Street Woman Fighter' and for her popularity as a TikTok influencer. Last month, she stepped onto an entirely new scene, making her musical debut in the original Korean production, 'Frida.' For the star dancer, who has long gravitated toward spaces 'where music, dance and song exist,' the stage itself is familiar. But embodying a completely different character was new territory — one she described as 'therapeutic.' 'I realized how limited I had been in expressing emotion,' she said during a group interview with reporters on Thursday. 'My (dance) performances were mostly about energy — focused on joy and projecting strength. But here, expressing the full spectrum of emotions, not only the positive ones, but anger and sorrow too, has been incredibly healing.' The training process, she said, also revealed a new side of herself. 'At first, I was embarrassed when I cried during rehearsals,' she recalled. 'As a dancer, crying often felt like weakness, like losing, you know? But here, tears felt like genuine emotions, and I learned to accept that. It made me want to express not just bright and positive feelings, but also darker emotions on stage in the future.' Now in its third run, 'Frida' traces the life of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, portraying how she transformed lifelong pain into art. The story unfolds as a play within a play, with Kahlo appearing as a guest on a late-night talk show. Aiki plays Refleja, the talk show host, and within the play's framing device, also takes on the role of Kahlo's complex lover Diego Rivera. At first, she said, juggling dancing, acting and delivering lines all at once felt awkward. But the role ultimately played to her strengths: her playful personality as the show host and her skills as a dancer. Her talents shine most in the standout number 'Hummingbird,' where each actor playing Diego performs their own specialty act. Aiki choreographed her own routine for the sequence, weaving together street dance locking, dance sport Latin steps and samba-based movements — earning nightly cheers from audiences. 'And I like to sprinkle in ad-libs, just to make sure each audience has a little extra fun that day,' she said. Yet, in other scenes, she deliberately reined herself in. 'I worked closely with the choreographer to find the right level of dance for the show, something that wouldn't steal the focus but would support Frida and complement the story,' she explained. Aiki's leap into musical theater also shifted how she views her identity. 'I think of myself as an artist, not just a dancer,' she said. 'I believe there's always a reason why I'm drawn to certain things, and I've never regretted following those instincts. This challenge feels like a gift — it's hard to unwrap, but it's worth it.' 'Frida' runs through Sept. 7 at Interpark Uniplex in Seoul's Daehangno district.

CJ ENM launches label dedicated to supporting content by Asian creators

First Light StoryHouse aims to elevate Asian voices and narratives South Korean entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM has launched First Light StoryHouse, a new label dedicated to supporting content development by Asian creators. The label falls under CJ ENM's newly unveiled Asian Content Initiative, aimed at elevating Asian voices on the global stage. The initiative is spearheaded by CJ Vice Chair Miky Lee, producer and former Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Janet Yang, and East West Bank Chair and CEO Dominic Ng. The trio will serve as founding partners and jointly guide the label's vision and strategic direction. CJ ENM will oversee operations of the label, with Jerry Kyoungboum Ko, head of the company's global film business, leading its management. According to CJ ENM, the label will strategically back a slate of film and scripted television projects led by Asian creatives. The projects are expected to span diverse genres, themes and cultural perspectives, highlighting the breadth of Asian experiences both in the US and elsewhere. Focusing on early-stage development, First Light StoryHouse will invest in and co-produce select titles with the aim of delivering market-ready projects. Once development is complete, the label plans to collaborate with studios, production companies and streaming platforms to bring the projects to fruition. "Through high-quality film and scripted TV content that showcases the Asian diaspora, the label aims to elevate historically underrepresented perspectives in both Hollywood and the international entertainment industry," a CJ ENM representative said in a press release. "Recent successes from Asian storytellers have shown the potential and authenticity of their stories,' said Miky Lee in a press release. 'Through this effort, we aim to spotlight these voices, believing in the power of storytelling to bridge cultures. Janet Yang and Dominic Ng have long championed this mission, and together, we are committed to empowering these stories on the global stage." The launch of First Light StoryHouse aligns with CJ ENM's ongoing push to expand the global reach of Asian stories, following a string of high-profile international successes. The company distributed Park Chan-wook's "Decision to Leave," which won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, and Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite," the first non-English-language film to win Cannes' Palme d'Or and later Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards. More recently, "Past Lives," co-distributed and co-financed by CJ ENM and A24, earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 2024 Oscars. CJ ENM continues to expand its global footprint with several upcoming titles, including "Bugonia," an English-language remake of the South Korean cult classic "Save the Green Planet!" directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, and "No Other Choice," a new film from Park Chan-wook featuring Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin.
