Two-day Young Indians Parliament held in Coimbatore
A two-day Young Indians Parliament 2.0, the flagship model parliament initiative by Young Indians (Yi), was held at SSVM School of Excellence in Coimbatore.
Organised by the Yi Coimbatore Chapter under its Thalir vertical, the event is designed to nurture leadership, civic responsibility, and life skills among school students.
P. Ganapathy Rajkumar, Member of Parliament, Coimbatore, who inaugurated the parliament simulation on June 27, 2025 (Friday), emphasised the importance of democratic participation and leadership. He urged students not just to exercise their right to vote but also to consider active roles in governance, policymaking, and public service.
Manimekalai Mohandoss, managing trustee of SSVM Institutions, and Mohandoss, trustee, SSVM Institutions, highlighted the significance of experiential learning models like Yi Parliament in shaping responsible, empathetic, and well-informed future citizens.
More than 150 students from 22 schools across Coimbatore, including 30 students from the Corporation Schools, participated in the event. Acting as MPs, students drafted bills, debated policies, and engaged in structured parliamentary proceedings, mirroring the real-world functioning of the Indian Parliament.

Pakistani Importers Grapple With Shipping Delays, Cost Surge After India's Cargo Ban

'Mother vessels are not coming to Pakistan due to this Indian action, which delays our imports by 30 to 50 days," said Javed Bilwani, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He stated that importers are now relying on smaller feeder vessels, which has driven up costs. Exporters have also noted a rise in shipping and insurance costs, though many say the overall impact on exports has so far remained limited. 'There is no significant impact on exports…, except for a rise in insurance costs. Shipping charges had already gone up even before the escalation," Aamir Aziz, a textile exporter, told the publication. Pakistan's export sector is heavily dependent on imported raw materials for value addition. With the Pakistani government already restricting imports to preserve foreign currency reserves, any disruption in the supply chain could have far-reaching effects, Dawn added. Trade ties between India and Pakistan have been tense since the Pulwama terror attack in 2019, after which India raised import duties on Pakistani goods to 200 per cent. Formal trade has largely remained frozen, with bilateral trade shrinking from USD 2.41 billion in 2018 to USD 1.2 billion in 2024. Pakistan's exports to India dropped from USD 547.5 million in 2019 to just USD 480,000 in 2024. Following the new ban, Indian authorities are also cracking down on efforts to bypass the rules. Last week, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 39 containers at Nhava Sheva Port in Navi Mumbai. The containers, holding over 1,100 metric tonnes of Pakistani-origin goods worth around Rs 9 crore, had been routed through Dubai and the UAE. The Ministry of Finance confirmed the seizure in an official statement. It said the goods violated India's import regulations, which prohibit both direct and indirect imports from Pakistan. Earthquake of magnitude 4.2 strikes Nepal (ANI) An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted Nepal on Sunday, according to a statement released by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The statement noted that the earthquake is susceptible to aftershocks, as it occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km. In a post on X, the NCS said: "EQ of M: 4.2, On: 29/06/2025 14:19:05 IST, Lat: 29.35 N, Long: 81.94 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal." Shallow earthquakes, such as the one that struck Nepal on Sunday, are typically more dangerous than deeper ones. In such cases, tremors are felt much closer to the Earth's surface, increasing the potential for widespread damage to life and property. In contrast, tremors from deeper earthquakes tend to lose intensity before reaching the surface. Nepal has a long history of seismic activity, with the devastating 2015 earthquake, which claimed thousands of lives, still fresh in public memory. The country lies in the Himalayan region, a zone of intense seismic activity, caused by the ongoing collision between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. This collision leads to the Indian plate sliding beneath the Eurasian plate, a process known as subduction, which builds up immense pressure and stress within the Earth's crust. The subduction zone amplifies this stress, making Nepal particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. The ongoing tectonic collision also contributes to the uplift of the Himalayan mountain range, further adding to seismic activity in the region. Earlier on April 26, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the 8,969 victims who lost their lives during the deadly 2015 earthquake in Nepal. Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stood beneath the replica of the Dharahara Tower, which collapsed during the 7.8-magnitude earthquake a decade ago, and paid tribute to those who perished in the disaster.
