EMR June 2025: 5G and FWA accelerating Gulf region's digital ambitions
In the Gulf, 5G is expected to constitute 90 percent of all mobile subscriptions, totaling 86 million in 2030.
Adoption of FWA is propelled by the demand for high-speed broadband alternatives and national ambitions for smart cities.
Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) continues to grow in appeal to communications service providers (CSPs) around the world, with the ability to offer speed-based tariff plans - enhanced by 5G capabilities - proving particularly attractive, the June 2025 Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) Mobility Report shows.
FWA is projected to account for more than 35 percent of new fixed broadband connections, with an expected increase to 350 million by the end of 2030. 5G FWA plays a crucial role in expanding broadband access, especially in areas where traditional wired infrastructure may be less feasible.
On 5G subscriptions, the June 2025 Ericsson Mobility Report forecasts subscriptions to top 2.9 billion globally by the end of 2025 - about one third of all mobile subscriptions. The 5G subscription forecast for the end of 2030 remains at 6.3 billion. 5G networks handled 35 percent of global mobile traffic by the end of 2024, with forecasters expecting the figure to top 80 percent by the end of 2030.
Service providers in the Gulf region are transitioning from traditional telcos to digital service providers, enabled by extensive 5G deployment and the adoption of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing and edge solutions. Network slicing, supported by programmable networks and open APIs, is expected to be a cornerstone in delivering customized and performance-sensitive services. From 2024 to 2030, mobile subscriptions in GCC countries are expected to grow at an annual rate of 3 percent, reaching 95 million.
By the end of the decade, 5G subscriptions are expected to comprise 90 percent of all mobile subscriptions, totaling 86 million. FWA adoption is driven by demand for high-speed alternatives to fixed broadband and national initiatives aimed at reaching underserved areas and supporting smart city ambitions.
Through commentary, insights and customer/partner case stories, the June 2025 EMR highlights the ability of 5G Standalone (5G SA) and 5G Advanced to create monetization opportunities for CSPs globally based on value delivery rather than data volume.

Kuwait expected to award sustainable consultancy contract for power and water project in Q4
Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity and Water and Renewable Energy (MEWRE) is expected to award the sustainable engineering consultancy contract for Subiya Power and Water Distillation Plant Phase 2 in the fourth quarter of 2025. The tender was issued on 27 April 2025 with a bid submission deadline of 20 July 2025. 'The consultancy contract award is expected in October 2025,' a source aware of the details said. The consultant will support the supply, installation, operation and maintenance project to convert the 250 megawatts (MW) second phase of Subiya power station from open cycle gas turbines (OCGT) to combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT). 'The project completion is targeted for the second quarter of 2027,' the source added. Last month, Zawya Projects had reported that MEWRE is expected to award the consultancy contract for the 900MW Subiya power plant expansion project in the third quarter. Subiya [or Sabiya] Power and Water Distillation Station is the largest power and water plant in Kuwait with a power generation capacity of 7046.7 MW, accounting for 35 percent of the installed capacity and water desalination capacity of 100 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD). Dubai aims to beat the traffic with 2026 Joby air taxi liftoff
DUBAI: Dubai commuters may soon have a new way to skip traffic: air taxis. Joby Aviation conducted the first test flight of its fully-electric air taxi in the emirate this week, a major milestone in the city's efforts to integrate airborne transport into existing mobility networks as early as next year. Joby hopes its air-taxis will ease pressure on existing ground transportation and offer travelers a faster alternative as Dubai faces increasing congestion. "We want to change the way people commute," Anthony Khoury, Joby's UAE General Manager, said. A journey from Dubai's main airport DXB to Palm Jumeirah aboard the Joby Aerial Taxi will take roughly twelve minutes, the company predicts, as opposed to 45 minutes by car. While Joby's long-term ambition is to make its aerial taxis "affordable for everybody to use," Khoury says, they acknowledge early pricing will likely target higher-income travelers. "As with any novel technology, early days might be a bit more premium." The demonstration flight was held on Monday at an isolated desert site southeast of Dubai's downtown and was designed to emulate a typical aerial taxi journey, according to Joby Aviation officials. In a ceremony attended by senior government officials, transport executives and company representatives, the experimental aircraft executed a vertical takeoff, flew for several miles, and then returned for a vertical landing. The Joby Aerial Taxi, the flagship electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developed by the California-based company, can fly distances of up to 160 kilometers (100 miles) at speeds reaching 320km/hr (200mph). Fully electric, with zero operating emissions, Joby's air-taxi is designed to be both eco-friendly and quiet enough for commercial use in dense urban areas. 'It will be flying in the city, next to residential areas, and hopefully people will barely notice it,' Khoury said. While eVTOLs such as Joby's have been hailed as the future of urban air the industry still faces major hurdles -- including securing regulatory approval and developing sufficient vertiport infrastructure. Morgan Stanley downgraded Joby's stock price target from $10 to $7 in April, flagging near-term execution risks and broader aerospace industry concerns, including tariffs and supply-chain issues. Joby is currently trading at $10.55. In early 2024, Joby signed a contract with Dubai's Roads and Transit Authority that awarded the company exclusive rights to operate aerial taxis in the city for the next six years. The company plans to inaugurate the emirate's commercial air-taxi service in 2026, with four initial vertiports located at Dubai International Airport (DXB), Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Downtown and Dubai Marina. 'In aviation, you don't see transformations like this,' said Didier Papadopoulos, Joby's President of Original Equipment Manufacturing. 'Every once in a while, you have this propulsive move into the future. What you're witnessing here is really exciting, and I'm excited for you to be riding this one point in the future.' IPTs for Qatar Insurance's USD T2 notes in 6.75% area
Initial price thoughts (IPTs) for Qatar Insurance Company's (QIC), USD-denominated Tier 2 notes are in the 6.75% area. The Reg S only perpetual non-call 6-year subordinated, unsecured Tier 2 notes will be issued by QIC (Cayman) Limited and guaranteed on a subordinated basis by QIC. HSBC has been appointed as sole structuring adviser. ANZ, HSBC and J.P. Morgan are global coordinators and joint bookrunners and ANZ, Emirates NBD Capital, HSBC, J.P.
