Seven people survive after boat goes through dam gate on Mississippi River
According to the Vernon County Sheriff's Office, the emergency unfolded around 1:30 p.m. when authorities received a 911 call reporting that a boat with several occupants had passed through one of the gates at Lock and Dam No. 8. Some of the passengers were still in the water or on the downstream side of the dam when first responders arrived.

Investigators say 39-year-old Brandon Kumm of La Crosse was operating the boat with six passengers onboard. The vessel's inboard engine reportedly stalled one to two miles upriver and failed to restart as it drifted toward the dam. Passengers attempted to paddle, but the current proved too strong. Authorities noted there was no attempt to drop anchor.
As the boat entered the 600-foot safety zone upstream of the dam, staff from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers acted quickly, closing the gates in the affected area in an effort to minimize danger.
Despite the emergency, all seven individuals—none of whom were wearing life jackets—went underwater beneath the Tainter gate and resurfaced downstream.
Corps staff threw life rings to the group, who helped each other to safety atop the dam. No injuries were reported, and no one was transported to the hospital.

'By the grace of God, no injuries were reported,' the Vernon County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Officials say higher-than-normal river levels may have created more turbulence but also more clearance under the gate, allowing the group to pass through without being pinned or injured.
The boat itself remained upright and came to rest against the gate, as designed in emergency situations. Although there were more than enough personal flotation devices onboard, none were worn at the time the occupants jumped from the vessel.
The sheriff's office emphasized the importance of boating safety equipment, recommending not only the use of life jackets but also the availability of emergency contact numbers for nearby locks and dams. The installation of a marine radio is also advised for added safety, especially in remote areas.

The middle of the main navigation channel at this location marks the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. While land access to the dam is more easily reached from the Wisconsin side, the investigation is being led by the Houston County (Minnesota) Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Vernon County Sheriff's Office and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The incident remains under investigation.

Lake Tahoe boating crackdown launched for Fourth of July weekend after deadly capsize
In the wake of one of Lake Tahoe's deadliest maritime disasters, law enforcement agencies across California and Nevada are mounting a full-scale safety campaign this Fourth of July weekend to prevent further tragedy on the lake's famously pristine but perilous waters. Last month, a sudden and violent squall capsized a boat near D.L. Bliss State Park, throwing 10 people into the frigid lake. Eight died. Two survived by clinging to the rocky shore in life jackets. The incident, among the worst recreational boating accidents in the region's history, sent shock waves through the tight-knit Tahoe boating community. From July 4 to 6, agencies from both states will participate in Operation Dry Water, a nationwide effort to curb boating under the influence through increased patrols, sobriety checkpoints and public education. Launched in 2009 by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and supported by the U.S. Coast Guard, the campaign targets holiday weekends when waterways are busiest. 'Recreate responsibly: wear your life jacket, designate a sober operator and make safety the priority every time you're on the water,' Ramona Fernandez, deputy director of California's Division of Boating and Waterways, said in a statement. Captain Buck Tingle of the Nevada Department of Wildlife echoed the urgency. 'Drinking and boating is a recipe for disaster,' he added. 'Our job is to ensure everyone's safety on the water. If you're boating under the influence, you could be ending your holiday in handcuffs.' Participating agencies include dozens of county sheriff's departments, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and law enforcement units from Washoe and El Dorado counties. Patrol boats will be active on Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, Lake Oroville and other heavily trafficked waterways. Boaters are being urged to wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets, check weather forecasts, file float plans and avoid alcohol while on the water. According to the Coast Guard, alcohol was the leading contributing factor in 17% of fatal boating accidents in 2023. In addition to enforcing sobriety, authorities are ramping up environmental protections. Mandatory boat inspections and designated no-wake zones — areas with strict speed limits to prevent boats from creating waves that disturb wildlife habitats or swimmers — are to be enforced around Lake Tahoe. A free Tahoe Boating app provides live weather updates, no-wake zone maps and safety tips. Officials warn that weather conditions could pose additional risks. The National Weather Service warns of gusty southwest winds on Thursday and Friday, with speeds reaching up to 25 mph on the lake and up to 40 mph on ridges. These winds may generate hazardous waves, especially for smaller vessels. Conditions are expected to improve by the weekend, bringing sunny skies and seasonal temperatures in the low to mid-70s. 'People often think of life jackets as bulky or uncomfortable,' Tingle said. 'But they've come a long way. Today's life jackets are stylish, comfortable — and most importantly, they save lives.' With tens of thousands expected on Tahoe's waters this weekend, authorities hope increased vigilance and a strong multiagency presence will keep the holiday celebration safe.

Sheriff Says Someone 'Sympathetic' to Travis Decker Is Possibly Helping Him Evade Law Enforcement (Exclusive)
The manhunt for Travis Decker began on June 2 after his three daughters were found asphyxiated in a remote area of the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, TO KNOW The manhunt for Travis Decker began on June 2 after his three daughters were found dead in a remote area of the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Wash. Since then, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, along with search and rescue organizations, have conducted an exhaustive search for Decker in the surrounding counties Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison tells PEOPLE that there's the "potential that he could have someone that was just more sympathetic to him and is providing him assistance"As the search for Travis Decker — the man suspected of killing his three daughters nearly two months ago — continues, the Washington Sheriff leading the investigation says it's possible someone is helping the former combat veteran evade the law. 'Certainly, [there's the] potential that he could have someone that was just more sympathetic to him and is providing him assistance,' Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison tells PEOPLE. 'We put the message out that we don't think that's a wise decision, but we get that everyone's going to make their own choices.' The sheriff's office, along with search and rescue organizations, have conducted an exhaustive search for Decker in the surrounding counties. The manhunt began on June 2 after his three daughters, Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, were found asphyxiated in a remote area of the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Wash. Decker's pickup truck was found at the campground, but the 32-year-old murder suspect was nowhere to be found. Decker had picked up the girls on May 30 for a court-approved visit but failed to return them to their mother. The mom, Whitney Decker, reported her daughters missing to police later that night, setting off a frantic search for the four missing people. On Friday, July 25, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said they were scaling back the search for Decker due to a 'decrease in leads and tips' into Decker's location. The office said 'there is insufficient information to suggest that he is alive, nor if he is deceased." Morrison tells PEOPLE 'there's still a potential' that Decker is alive. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Sign up for for breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases. 'Unless he's accounted for, there's still the potential that he could be alive and still actively fleeing from us,' he says. 'Right now, you're in a pretty leisurely time for our county that you could be outdoors and probably live decently comfortable." "We get that the probability that if he is still out there, he's going to be looking to obtain supplies, food, other resources, which right now we're not getting any reports of anything like that missing," Morrison says. "The probability of him just surviving off foraging or trapping — not likely." Morrison says he can't discount the possibility that Decker may have hitchhiked out of the area or gotten picked up by someone. 'Could be a potential,' he says. 'There are roads in the area that he could have made it to. And if someone wasn't paying attention, they might've provided a ride to him not knowing what he was associated with. Or maybe they did know, and they did provide him a ride.' The most recent search for Decker was conducted in the Blewett Pass area in the Wenatchee Mountains. There were two possible sightings of Decker — one in June and another in July — but authorities have since confirmed they were not him. Authorities have also previously said Decker may have attempted to cross into Canada because he allegedly searched "how to relocate to Canada" online, according to a U.S. Marshals Service affidavit obtained by PEOPLE. 'We're frustrated because, certainly, we'd like to have closure not only for our community, but for the family,' says Morrison. 'And with the amount of resources we put in there, I was kind of hopeful that we would've gotten something. This could be a longer, drawn-out search and we're still optimistic that we will get closure." Decker is wanted on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping. Maine man killed by ‘mini cannon' projectile during fireworks display
A Maine man was killed when a 'mini cannon' projectile from a fireworks display struck him during a gathering among neighbors last weekend, according to authorities. Joseph Hennessey, 41, crumpled to the ground and succumbed to his injuries after he was rushed to a local hospital in Oxford County Saturday night, the county sheriff's office said, according to reports. Joseph Hennessey Joseph Hennessey/Facebook The fireworks show was taking place at a town of Oxford home when tragedy struck. 'I heard a pretty big bang, which I thought was probably a cannon because I've heard them and I've seen them at different places that I've been at,' neighbor Kevin Boutin told WMTW. 'Then the fireworks stopped and then all of a sudden, the ambulance was here and the fire trucks.' The incident happened at a town of Oxford home. KOAT The medical examiner's office ruled that Hennessey, a South Paris resident, was killed by a projectile that came from a mini cannon during the fireworks, the station reported. The death is still under investigation by the Maine State Police. The incident is one of numerous fatalities involving fireworks during the summer months, including an 8-year-old girl who was struck during a Fourth of July celebration this year and South Carolina father who was killed when he put a lit fireworks on his head last year.
