Powerball jackpot: Cessnock's newest millionaire bursts into uncontrollable laughter after winning lotto

West Australian09-05-2025
A man from New South Wales has struck gold, winning the entire $30 million jackpot in Thursday night's Powerball draw, declaring he is 'done with bills forever'.
After holding the only division one winning entry in Powerball draw 1512, drawn on Thursday, 8 May, the man from Cessnock bought from Shell Aberdare Newsagency on Aberdare Road, netted him the life-changing prize.
An official from
The Lott
delivered the news shortly after the draw, catching the winner completely off guard.
'Holy sh..t!' he exclaimed, overwhelmed by the moment.
'Bless you, man! Bless you!' he laughed, before erupting into disbelief.
'I just had this ticket on the fridge. I was looking at it this afternoon and thought, 'wouldn't it be lovely to win'. The ticket was there with all the bills. There will be no more worrying about bills now. I don't care if I get a bill now!'
Shaking with excitement, the newly minted multi-millionaire admitted sleep might be off the cards for the night.
'I used to wonder what I'd do if I got a winning phone call, but now all I can do is shake! I better take a breath or two.'
After a self-described 'rough trot,' the man said the win was a turning point for him and his family.
'For a start, I'll look at buying a new house and looking after the family. Then, I'll take it from there.'
His first move? 'I'm going to ring my kids right now and tell them the news!'
The winning numbers in Powerball draw 1512 were 33, 32, 35, 14, 15, 7 and 34.
The Powerball number was 12.

Woman credits bizarre Facebook post for $4.2m lotto win

A woman who won $4.2m in Saturday's lotto draw has credited a bizarre Facebook post for her enormous windfall. The Wellington woman held one of seven division one winning entries in Saturday night's draw, claiming a whopping $4,285,714.29. The winning numbers in the draw were 17, 23, 40, 42, 44 and 2, while the supplementary numbers were 27 and 39. Speaking to The Lott, the woman said she was scrolling on Facebook when she saw a video that offered an unusual omen about her finances. 'F***ing hell! Wow. I'm glad you warned me to sit down!' she said. 'I'm ecstatic. Oh my god. I can't believe this. 'It's funny, I had a thing on Facebook that said, 'If you watch this until the end, a large sum of money will come your way'. 'I didn't really think anything of it, and here we are!' She said her winnings would help her pay off her car and mortgage, leaving her 'completely debt-free'. This isn't the first time she's won at the lotto, but it's the largest sum to date. 'I've played for decades, since I was 18!' she said. 'I once won $400, but that seems like nothing compared to this.' Another of Saturday's division one wins went to a group of friends from southwestern Sydney. The four mates, who have been friends for three decades, entered as a private syndicate and have won $1,071,428.57 each. The syndicate leader said the four mates would 'help all our families'. 'It's a group of us that won,' he said. 'We've been friends for over 30 years. It'll be split four ways. 'It's funny thinking about how we used to hang out together and play together, and now we've won this together.'

The holder of a $100m Bondi lotto ticket still hasn't come forward. What happens now?

In the days before June 12, one very lucky punter entered the Bondi Junction Newsagency & Internet Cafe and bought a ticket for the upcoming Powerball. When Powerball 1517 was drawn, that ticket was the only division one winner, entitling its holder to the entire top prize pool of $100 million. And yet, more than a month later and after extensive public appeals, no one has come forward to claim the prize. Grace Martino works at the newsagency part-time and has seen plenty of winners in her four decades of selling lottery tickets. She said the buzz around the mysterious Powerball jackpot has been particularly intense. 'So many customers have been asking about the ticket to get some idea of who won,' Martino said, explaining that the store doesn't know the time or date of the sale, only that it was sold at their shop. She cautions that it's not uncommon for tickets to go missing. 'People say, 'I would never lose my ticket', but people do end up losing it … and more [frequently] than you think.' The $100 million prize is enough to buy a private jet, a Caribbean island or to stay a little under two years living in the most expensive hotel room in the world (The $155,000 per night Royal Mansion at Atlantis the Royal, Dubai). It'll even allow you to crack the Sydney housing market, but it still won't be enough to nab you one of the most expensive properties in town.
