Government launches ‘Shining Stars Award' to honour SSC, Inter toppers
The initiative aims to recognise high-achieving students from both government and private institutions who excel in the SSC and Intermediate public examinations.
As per a recent government order, SSC students securing 500 out of 600 marks (83.33%) or more will be honoured at the mandal level. For Intermediate, students scoring 830 and above will be recognised at the district level. The scheme also includes special provisions for Children With Special Needs (CWSN).
Each awardee will receive a cash prize of Rs 20,000, a medal, and a certificate. Six SSC students per mandal—across OC, BC, SC, and ST categories—will be selected. In the Intermediate category, 36 students per district will be awarded from various streams, including MPC, BiPC, HEC, CEC/MEC, and Vocational courses, along with CWSN achievers.
Secretary of the School Education Department, Kona Sasidhar, said the awards aim to inspire merit and sustained learning without income-based restrictions. 'It's a celebration of talent and determination,' he noted.
The awards will be distributed on June 9 at district headquarters in events chaired by respective District In-charge Ministers.
The Board of Intermediate Education will fund the programme.

Ghaziabad: GDA has initiated action against societies lacking rainwater harvesting systems. Inspections revealed that among 650-plus societies that were checked, many buildings didn't have the system, while many had non-functional installations. 5000 get a second chance in life with SMILE
Indore: Indore, which was selected under the SMILE (Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise) Project last year, has so far recorded the rehabilitation of around 5,000 beggars. So far, Union govt granted funds of Rs 24 lakhs, while the Indore district administration also provided financial assistance of Rs 18.5 lakh to support this initiative that made Indore a beggar-free city. Rupali Jain, who runs an NGO enrolled under the SMILE Project, said that after launching the initiative, around 5,000 beggars were rehabilitated, while 2,578 beggars were provided training in vocational courses. "The funds were used in providing shelters to all those who were found begging and were homeless," she said, adding that an entire infrastructure was created to achieve the desired goal. "We employed a team of rescuers along with those who provide training to the inmates," she said, adding that with the help of the local administration, IMC, and other departments concerned, the plan to make Indore a beggar-free city was very well executed. "Most of the funds granted in this drive were used in transportation, food, hygiene, and other things as part of the shelter and care of the inmates," she said.

Mini-vans sanctioned for Pachamalai Hills to ease tribal students' commute, boost school access
TIRUCHY: To address long-standing challenges faced by the tribal students to access schools in the Pachamalai Hills of Tiruchy district, the Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned the procurement of five new mini-vans under a statewide initiative by the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department. The scheme follows the success of a pilot project in the Kalvarayan Hills and aims to provide safe and reliable school transportation in remote tribal regions. According to a Government Order (GO) issued last month, each Trax Cruiser mini-van will cost Rs 15.74 lakh, and the total allocation for Tiruchy district is Rs 78.71 lakh. The scheme is fully funded by the state government, covering vehicle maintenance and fuel, along with salaries of drivers. In Tiruchy, the vans will be assigned to tribal residential schools to pick up and drop off students, especially those from interior villages, where daily commuting remains a major barrier to education, particularly for middle and high school students, officials said. However, primary school children in Pachamalai Hills largely don't face this issue, as most of the elementary schools are located within a few minutes walk from students' homes. Sources said 29 schools are operated by the department in Tiruchy district, with the majority situated in three key panchayats of the Pachamalai region. These include two higher secondary schools at Chinna Illupur and Top Sengattupatti, one high school at Sembuluchampatti, and two middle schools in Nagore and Thenpuranadu. The remaining institutions are elementary schools, with 22 located in the hills and two more in the foothills.
