Wing Wars of Acadiana returns to downtown Lafayette, raising funds for homeless youth

Yahoo13-04-2025
Wing Wars of Acadiana: Acadiana's Chicken Wing Festival volunteers, cooks and members of the community of Lafayette came together Saturday with the goal of support.
The event at Parc International in downtown aimed to benefit the Gifting Grace Project, which helps homeless children by providing them with essential resources.
David Owens, the founder and chairman of the organization, started the cookoff in 2021. It initially became the organization's premier fundraiser for the Gifting Grace Project. It also serves as a community awareness event.
The Gifting Grace Project began in the fall of 2020 and aimed to give back to the Acadiana community. What started as a holiday outreach, according to their website, quickly grew when they learned that nearly 600 students in the Lafayette Parish School System were experiencing homelessness.
During the cookoff, Wing Wars of Acadiana welcomed all cooks, both professional and amateur, who came together to cook a whole lot of wings.
A total of 12 participated in this year's Wing Wars of Acadiana: Acadiana's Chicken Wing Festival, two more than last year, according to Owens' sister Sarah Arnold, who helps with the Gifting Grace Project.
'We team up with our group of volunteers and committee members to make this happen,' Arnold said. 'We sponsor, on average, around 2000 kids a year, and you have to have money for that, and so as a nonprofit, we rely on fundraising and donations, and this is our only fundraiser event every year.'
Arnold said they raised about $30,000 last year, and they are hoping to meet that number this year and then some.
The 12 teams that competed were:
ATF Bistro
Bayou Bao Co.
Chateau de Haydell
Culture Creole Seasoning
Home-Grill Advantage
Louisiana Love All-purpose seasoning
MaD All Purpose Cajun Seasoning
Mutha Cluckn Wings
NextHome Cutting Edge Realty
Rusty's Seasoning for Every Stuff
Queen's Wings
DezMeaux's Boudin
Wings weren't the only thing that was enjoyed that day. Live music from three Swamp Land Revival, Sharona Thomas Band, and Coteau Grove played throughout the day, as well as fun jumps, balloon animals, and various local booths.
Lines of people filled all 12 booths, ready to eat various flavors of chicken wings. As the boxes filled up with tickets for their favorite flavor, and cheers and laughter grew louder from the teams competing, Keith Domingue with MaD All-Purpose Cajun Seasoning, said they, like everyone else there, were there to support the Gifting Grace Project.
'We enjoy being a part of this event because we are raising money for the kids of Acadiana,' Domingue said. 'We feel very fortunate to do what we do, and we can give back to the community.'
This is the third year in a row that Domingue and MaD All Purpose Cajun have competed in Wing Wars of Acadiana: Acadiana's Chicken Wing Festival. This year they cooked up traditional wings with their barbecue rub, and original to help raise money.
For a pair of newcomers, Summer Wilkinson and Keith Bearb, this was their first Wing Wars of Acadiana: Acadiana's Chicken Wing Festival.
Wilkinson said she has enjoyed her first time here, after being downtown and was told that they should give the event a try.
'I definitely plan on coming back next year,' Wilkinson said.
Bearb, who tried pretty much every wing before noon, said that he was impressed with the event and turnout, especially how well-organized the event was.
As far as his favorite so far, Bearb said the wings from Bayou Bao Co. Their Korean Fired Chicken Wings became one that he remembered most of all.
'It has a really good crust, sauce, sesame seeds, it was crispy, and it was one of the best flavors,' Bearb said.

Arnold said that 100% of the money raised will go straight to the Gifting Grace Project, and for those who participated in a great cause, she said it doesn't get any better than that.
'They're volunteering their time, their money, and they want to do it in this area, in the heart of the city," Arnold said. 'Every year when we do this, we always ask if they can come out and do this, and every time they tell us yes.'

Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'FUBAR' canceled at Netflix after 2 seasons

The series, which first debuted on Netflix in 2023, marked the first leading role for the actor on a scripted television show. Turns out, he won't be back. Arnold Schwarzenegger's action series FUBAR will not be returning for a third season at Netflix, Entertainment Weekly can confirm. A source adds that the streamer is proud of the work that producers, cast, and crew put into the show. The series, which first debuted on Netflix in 2023, marked the first leading role for the actor on a scripted television show. The first season was a ratings hit, according to the streamer, but the second season apparently had a much quieter debut in June. (According to Variety, season 2 made Nielsen's streaming originals top 10 only for the week of June 16, and fell off thereafter.) Per the logline, FUBAR follows a father and daughter who learn that they've each secretly been working as CIA Operatives for years. The two then realize their entire relationship has been a lie and that they truly don't know one another at all. Forced to team up as partners, the series tackles universal family dynamics against a global backdrop of spies, action, and humor. In a statement ahead of the series premiere, creator, showrunner, and executive producer Nick Santora called the show "by far, the most surreal project of my career." He continued, "I grew up watching Arnold Schwarzenegger films — I'd hit my dad up for a few bucks so I could race to the movies and see the biggest star in the world on the big screen — so creating the first scripted television project for Arnold is unbelievably exciting for me." Santora added, "The thing I always marveled at was how Schwarzenegger could be funny while still kicking ass ... that's why I wanted FUBAR to be a hysterical, CIA-spy comedy mixed with heart-stopping action! And it is all that — and more. I'd love to elaborate with more details, but, sorry, it's classified." In addition to Schwarzenegger, FUBAR also starred Monica Barbaro, Milan Carter, Fortune Feimster, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Aparna Brielle, Guy Burnet, Andy Buckley, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jay Baruchel, Barbara Eve Harris, and Scott Thompson. In addition to Santora, Schwarzenegger, Adam Higgs, Scott Sullivan, Phil Abraham, Amy Pocha, Seth Cohen and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell served as additional executive producers. Skydance Television produced. While FUBAR wasn't so lucky, Netflix has renewed several shows of late, including: Wednesday, Untamed, Tires, Ransom Canyon, Virgin River, Bridgerton, Forever, Four Seasons, The Diplomat, My Life with the Walter Boys, Survival of the Thickest, Geek Girl, Lincoln Lawyer, Sweet Magnolias, Devil May Cry, Beauty in Black, Nobody Wants This, A Man on the Inside, and The Vince Staples Show. Happy Birthday Arnold Schwarzenegger: The 7 Best Arnold Schwarzenegger Movies, Ranked

Here are the seven best Schwarzenegger films, ranked from least to most awesome. As the Austrian-born action star, bodybuilding icon and former California governor turns 78 today, we look back on some of his films we love the most. We should probably insert a jokey catchphrase here, but we have too much respect. Here are the seven best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, ranked. Related Headlines All 12 Christopher Nolan Movies Ranked All 8 Superman Movies Ranked Worst to Best, Including James Gunn's Brilliant Latest 13 Bond Girl Names Ranked From Silly to Sensational But First These things are subjective, and we would never suggest that our list of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies is the same as your list of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. So if you think we missed one, please let us know in the comments. At least we can all agree on Total Recall (above), right? Now, on with our list. Predator (1987) For people who like biceps and sweat with their aliens, this is the one. Vietnam veteran Dutch Schaefer (you know who) leads a military rescue team deep into a jungle on an impossible mission... which turns out to be the easy part. An alien hunter with the ability to turn invisible decides Dutch and his team are the worthy prey he's crossed a galaxy to find. The very powerful cast includes not just Carl Weathers (above), but Jesse "The Body" Ventura and Bill Duke. And so begins the Predator franchise. Commando (1985) Smart in all the best ways and dumb in all the best ways, this one finds former commando John Matrix (Schwarzenegger, of course) trying to save his daughter (Alyssa Milano) from the deposed leader of fictional Val Verde, a country that also pops up in Die Hard 2 and other films by writer-producer extraordinaire Steven E. DeSouza. Arnold delivers some masterful one liners, none better than the one after he drops a baddie off a cliff, and then flight attendant/pilot/rocket launcher operator Rae Dawn Chong asks what he did to him. "I let him go," Matrix replies. Total Recall (1990) The future governor of California plays a seemingly normal guy in this one, but director Paul Verhoeven fills his world with madcap grotesquery. It's kind of sci-fi, kind of satire, and it gives you the chance to watch the Arnold Schwarzenegger vs. Sharon Stone fight no one thought to ask for. It also spawned enough memes and catchphrases for both Earth and Mars, so there's that. True Lies (1994) Future Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis is Arnold's perfect female counterpart in this James Cameron crowd-pleaser about a couple keeping secrets from each other. He's a spy, and she's flirting with a fake (Bill Paxton). It stars cute but ends with a nail-biter of a finale as they try to, yes, save their daughter (Eliza Dushku). The Running Man (1987) Probably the most underrated Arnold film, this Steven E. DeSouza scripted film — based on a story by Stephen King's nom de plume, Richard Bachman, feels more ahead of its time every time you watch it. It anticipated both reality TV and a U.S. government that blends governing with bread-and-circuses entertainment under the Trump-like Damon Killian (Family Feud host Richard Dawson.) A remake is coming this year, starring Glen Powell, but the new film has very big shoes to fill. Fun fact: Both Predator and The Running Man, both released in 1987, pair Arnie with Jesse "The Body" Ventura, who later became the governor of Minnesota and whose celebrity candidacy arguably paved the way for Schwarzenegger's run for governor of California. The Terminator (1984) Our guy is at his best when he doesn't try to seem like a normal human: His outstanding turn as an unstoppable killer cyborg made him a superstar in The Terminator, his first collaboration with James Cameron. We could make a whole other gallery with behind the scenes stories of The Terminator... So we did. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) One of the best sequels ever made, Terminator 2 twisted Schwarzenegger's persona as a deadpan killing machine by making him the hero this time around, charged with saving young John Connor (Eddie Furlong) from an upgraded opponent, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick). This time the T-800 Terminator is working alongside John and his mom, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). It's a total thrill ride, but also a smart film with plenty to say about AI (prescient!) and a lot of heart. Schwarzenegger is at his funniest in T2, and by the end of the film he shows that he can he vulnerable, too. Liked This List of the 7 Best Arnold Schwarzenegger Movies, Ranked? Tupac Shakur slaying suspect files appeal with Nevada Supreme Court to dismiss charges

The 62-year-old has admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, 'Compton Street Legend,' that he provided the gun used in the shooting. His attorney, Carl Arnold, said Davis' constitutional rights were being violated. 'Mr. Davis cooperated with law enforcement over the course of more than a decade, relying on repeated assurances that his statements would not be used against him — yet those very statements now form the core of the State's case,' Arnold said in a statement. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Arnold first filed a motion to dismiss the case in January of this year, alleging constitutional violations because of a 27-year delay in prosecution. He also said Davis had immunity agreements granted to him by federal and local authorities. Advertisement A district court judge upheld his charges, saying he was not protected from prosecution because he had not provided proof of those immunity deals and that the decades-long delay was not intentional. According to the appeal, Davis was interviewed in 1998 and 1999 by federal prosecutors under the agreement that his statements would not be used to prosecute him. At the time, he denied knowing who was involved in Shakur's killing. Advertisement He was interviewed again in 2008 and 2009 under the same conditions that he would not be prosecuted with his statements, according to the appeal. It was then that he described his 'alleged involvement in the murder and identified the alleged shooter,' the appeal said. Arnold said prosecutors had not presented any evidence connecting Davis to the slaying other than his own statements, which is not enough for a trial. He asked the Nevada Supreme Court to grant their motion to dismiss the case, or recognize that he was granted immunity from prosecution for the statements he made during law enforcement interviews. Davis remains in custody at the Clark County Detention Center. His trial is scheduled to begin in early February 2026. Shakur's death at 25 came as his fourth solo album, 'All Eyez on Me,' remained on the charts, with about 5 million copies sold. Nominated six times for a Grammy Award, Shakur is still largely considered one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time.
