CBI holds coordination meeting with DFS, public sector banks officials
During the day-long meeting, all pending matters pertaining to ongoing investigation and prosecution of the bank fraud cases being handled by CBI were discussed and several issues were sorted out, said a release.
According to the release, the meeting was a follow up meeting after the high-level meeting held in January this year between Department of Financial Services, CBI and Public Sector Banks, in Mumbai. The agenda was to enhance the interdepartmental cooperation and expedite investigations pertaining to bank fraud cases.
During the meeting, detailed presentations were made by the CBI and Public Sector Banks officials on relevant operational issues.
Many aspects were discussed and resolved. A close coordination between the banks and CBI in terms of timely sharing of relied-upon documents was acknowledged.
Further efforts to streamline procedures and ensure proactive cooperation in matters related to obtaining approvals and sanctions under Section 17A and Section 19 of the Prevention of Corruption Act were also emphasised.
The Officers from CBI and Public Sector Banks exchanged case-specific details and discussed the way forward to expedite pending investigations.
The meeting concluded with a consensus to maintain the current momentum of cooperation between the CBI and Public Sector Banks. Emphasis was laid on continuing structured engagement and institutional collaboration to overcome procedural bottlenecks, expedite investigations, resolve pending issues, and ensure timely completion of investigations, the release stated.

Punjab and Haryana HC to hear Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia's plea challenging ‘illegal arrest, remand' in vigilance case tomorrow
The Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday fixed July 4 for hearing a petition filed by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia, challenging his recent arrest and subsequent police remand in a vigilance case. The matter came up before Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya, who adjourned the hearing by a day to allow Majithia's counsel to place on record the latest remand orders issued in the case. Majithia moved the high court seeking relief against what he terms his 'illegal arrest and remand' following an FIR registered by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 under Sections 13(1)(b) read with 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. In his petition, Majithia has alleged that the FIR is a product of 'political witch-hunting and vendetta' aimed at maligning him, adding that he has been a vocal critic and political opponent of the ruling regime. The petition claims that Majithia was picked up from his Amritsar residence around 9 am on June 25 and kept in custody for over two hours before his formal arrest at 11.20 am, in violation of his constitutional and statutory rights. Citing video evidence and the remand order issued the next day, the plea contends that this delay amounts to illegal detention and a breach of Article 22(2) of the Constitution and Section 187 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (formerly Section 167 CrPC). The petition also challenges the remand order passed by the Judicial Magistrate on June 26, calling it 'manifestly perverse and non-speaking.' It alleges that the Magistrate failed to comply with mandatory requirements laid out in the Punjab and Haryana High Court Rules and Orders, particularly Volume III, Chapter 11-B, which mandate judicial satisfaction, scrutiny of the case diary, and clear reasons for granting police custody. Majithia's lawyers argue that there is no indication in the order that the Magistrate applied his mind or considered a previous Supreme Court order dated March 4, 2025. In that order, the apex court had denied the Punjab government's request for custodial interrogation and had instead directed Majithia to cooperate with the Special Investigation Team, which, according to the petition, he fully complied with. Despite this, the state sought a fresh remand by allegedly concealing facts and misrepresenting urgency before the magistrate. The petition argues that the remand was intended to extract a confession in violation of Article 20(3) of the Constitution. Calling the arrest and remand a 'gross violation' of Articles 14, 20, and 21 of the Constitution, the petition raises broader legal questions around the alleged misuse of criminal procedure, abuse of remand powers, and the right to liberty and fair investigation. Majithia is seeking quashing of the remand order and appropriate directions to prevent what he terms further abuse of process. The petition has been filed through advocates Sartej Singh Narula, Damanbir Singh Sobti, Arshdeep Singh Cheema, Arshdeep Singh Kler, and Sultan Singh Sangha.

Malda court convicts rape accused for first conviction in West Bengal post-poll violence
A special court in Malda has convicted an individual accused for the rape of a nine-year-old girl, marking the first conviction in the post-poll violence cases of West Bengal investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), said a statement from the agency. The trial of the case was conducted by Amitava Maitra, Special Public Prosecutor of CBI.(Representational) The Calcutta High Court, in its order dated August 19, 2021 had handed over the cases of murder and crimes against women, specifically rape or attempt to rape during the post poll violence, to the CBI for investigation. One such case pertaining to the rape of a minor girl aged around 9 years was registered by CBI. Investigation conducted had revealed that the victim minor girl was raped by a retired government school teacher, Rafikul Islam alias Bhelu in Malda. The accused lured the victim, who was playing in a mango orchard, with money and raped her on the evening of June 4, 2021. The incident of rape was witnessed by the cousin of the victim who is also a minor girl aged around 10 years. Both the victim and the eye witness deposed strongly about the incident of rape before the trial court. On July 2, the Learned Additional District and Sessions Judge, 2nd (POCSO Court), Malda, West Bengal, after a thorough trial, found the accused, Rafikul Islam guilty of the offence under sections of POCSO Act and IPC for committing rape on a minor girl. This is the first post-poll violence case in which the trial has concluded and the same has resulted in conviction. The sentence is likely to be pronounced on July 4. The trial of the case was conducted by Amitava Maitra, Special Public Prosecutor of CBI. Following the declaration of 2021 West Bengal Assembly results on May 2, 2021, severe violence erupted in different parts of the state and a number of cases of murder, rape and attempt to rape were reported, leading to filing of several writ petitions in the Calcutta High Court. Cognizance of these violent acts was also taken by Human Rights Commission. After taking over the post-poll violence cases, the CBI had constituted special teams for investigation by drawing officers and also appointed special counsels for expeditious trials.
