What former Wisconsin star John Tonje said in his introductory press conference with Jazz

Former Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje met with the media for the first time as a member of the Utah Jazz on Sunday. Just a few days after hearing his name called on day two of the 2025 NBA draft, Tonje ventured to Salt Lake City, Utah, for his first meeting with local media members. He, alongside lottery pick and former Rutgers star Ace Bailey and NCAA champion Walter Clayton Jr., shared their initial thoughts on Utah and the opportunity to compete on a professional stage. Prior to the draft, several outlets projected Tonje to fall in the mid-40's. The Jazz elected to select the Nebraska native at No. 53 overall, a slight slip for the 6-foot-5 scoring machine. Nonetheless, Tonje appeared optimistic. 'That was a little bit outside my range," Tonje told the media. "At the end of the day, I'm super excited to be here and just so happy I'm here with the Jazz.' Unlike Bailey, a consensus lottery pick before he even reached Rutgers, Tonje's journey to reach the NBA was a bit unorthodox. As a high schooler, Tonje received just three offers from Omaha, Colorado State and Missouri Western State. As a freshman with the Rams, he averaged 3.6 points and 1.0 rebounds in 8.5 minutes per game as a reserve. The future NBA draftee would spend four years with Colorado State and eventually started all 33 games as a senior with per-game averages of 14.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists. A summer with the Cameroon National Team in during the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in 2023, coupled with a 2023-24 medical redshirt season, positioned him for an explosive final year as a college player. With the Badgers, Tonje was named a 2025 Second Team All-American, 2025 Naismith Player of the Year Semifinalist and member of the 2025 All-Big Ten first team. He averaged just under 20 points per game off 46.5% shooting from the field, 39% from 3 and 91% from the free-throw line, punctuating his season with a 37-point performance against BYU in the NCAA Tournament. Not coincidentally, Tonje's growth from an athlete with a minimal recruiting profile to college star prompted him to reflect on his basketball adventure. 'I think I had a lot of adversity," Tonje said. "Had to work my way up. I've been the last guy on the bench and then the guy at the top of the scouting report, so I think I'm someone that can understand all types of roles on the team, how to face adversity and try to get better every day.' He will now look to showcase his dexterity on the hardwood when the Jazz begin their summer league run in Salt Lake City on July 5. Lakers Trade Target Deandre Ayton Reportedly Threw Tantrums In Locker Room, Which Led To $25.5 Million Buyout

Lakers Trade Target Deandre Ayton Reportedly Threw Tantrums In Locker Room, Which Led To $25.5 Million Buyout originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Portland Trail Blazers center Deandre Ayton has garnered a lot of interest from teams in the free agency market, primarily being linked in trade rumors with the Los Angeles Lakers. While the big man is in the process of completing his buyout, The Athletic's Jason Quick revealed an interesting story regarding why the 26-year-old is in such a situation in the first place. He wrote: Advertisement "But in the end, they couldn't live with his bad ways. The tardiness to team flights and practices, according to a team source. The skipping of rehabilitation appointments. Fans saw him slam chairs when he was taken out of games. And a team source said there were tantrums in the locker room when he was sidelined for poor effort." Ayton's place with the Trail Blazers seemed fairly solid. After a great start to his career with the Phoenix Suns, the center seemed to set out on his own. Unfortunately, his time in Portland wasn't as fruitful as the team repeatedly ended seasons in the lower rung of the West. Ayton's regular-season averages of 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds are quite impressive, especially if you're the Lakers and have a dire need for a starting center. With Clint Capela headed to the Rockets and Brook Lopez signing with the cross-city rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Purple and Gold have effectively whiffed on most of their priority big man targets in free agency. In light of this, Ayton's numbers and performance, along with his connection with Doncic's agent, Bill Duffy, make him a favorable target. Advertisement But Quick's article reveals a lot of interesting aspects about the center that could become a matter of concern for the Purple and Gold as they continue to pursue him. Ayton's poor professionalism and work ethic could be largely detrimental to their title aspirations if they are to sign him. His temper tantrums may also not be conducive to building camaraderie within the locker room, a critical aspect of being part of a team, especially given how long the regular season is. The Lakers are in a very fickle situation to start off the free agency period. With immense pressure to form a title-contending team, courtesy of LeBron James, the Purple and Gold are yet to make significant moves to inspire such confidence. While they are still more than likely to proceed with signing Ayton, if the opportunity presents itself, the team will still be in need of backup centers to fill out their frontcourt. Advertisement With the addition of Jake LaRavia from the Sacramento Kings being the only move in free agency thus far, the Lakers are in a tough spot. But with a lot of offseason left to go, the front office still has some flexibility with proceeding with the roster construction process. The best of Luke Kornet with the Boston Celtics in the 2024-25 NBA regular season

It was not that long ago that fans of the Boston Celtics were unsure if backup big man Luke Kornet had a future with the team. Now, those same fans are likely among the many upset about how the Celtics could not hang onto the rising center after the best season of his career in the NBA to date. Kornet really came into his own with Boston in the 2024-25 regular season, getting more run than he had in the past, with starting bigs Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis taking nights off to rest or injury more than they had in the previous few years. The Celtics took note of his growth as a player as well, putting together a highlight reel of his best plays last season for us to watch later, in honor of what he brought to the team. Advertisement Check it out in the clip embedded below to see just how good he was last season for yourself -- we will miss the Vanderbilt alum and his goofy courtside manner greatly.
