King Charles to host Donald Trump and his wife Melania for state visit in September, Buckingham Palace confirms

Daily Mail2 days ago
Donald Trump will be hosted by the King at Windsor Castle during his second state visit to the UK – but will miss out on addressing MPs.
The President will be accompanied by his wife, First Lady Melania, on his trip from September 17 to 19, Buckingham Palace said. He was previously feted by a state visit in 2019.
The House of Commons will not be sitting at the time because it will be in recess for the party conference season, meaning he will not be able to address Parliament as French president Emmanuel Macron did during his visit last week.
However, the House of Lords will be sitting.
In February, during a meeting at the White House, Sir Keir Starmer presented Mr Trump with a 'historic and unprecedented' personal invitation from the King inviting him for a second state visit.
In the letter, Charles suggested he and the President might meet at Balmoral or Dumfries House in Scotland before the grander state visit began.
However, it is understood that there were logistical challenges surrounding an informal visit, with complexities in both the King and Mr Trump's diaries meaning a private meeting was not possible over the summer months.
It emerged last week that Police Scotland has been in the early stages of planning for the visit, which is likely to see the President travel to either of his golf clubs in Aberdeenshire or Ayrshire – an event which will require substantial policing resources.

Precedent for second-term US Presidents who have already made a state visit is usually tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, as was the case for George W Bush and Barack Obama.
The September event comes after Charles visited Canada in May where he opened the nation's parliament.
Many Canadians saw the King's two-day visit to Ottawa as a symbol of support for the country that has faced the unwanted attention of Mr Trump's trade war and threats to annex it.
Last week, Mr Macron and his wife Brigitte were hosted by the King and Queen during his three-day visit.
Mr Macron's itinerary included a glittering banquet at Windsor Castle, a carriage ride through the historic Berkshire town and a ceremonial welcome.
The state dinner was attended by the Queen, the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Prime Minister and senior members of the Cabinet.

Trump says he will meet Starmer in ‘oil capital' of Aberdeen

Donald Trump has backed oil and gas over 'detrimental' wind power projects as he said he will meet Sir Keir Starmer for talks in the European 'oil capital' of Aberdeen. The US president said he will have a 'state meeting' with the Prime Minister in the city when he makes a private visit to Scotland later this month. Downing Street confirmed on Monday the Prime Minister will travel north and meet Mr Trump during his trip. Mr Trump owns two golf resorts in Scotland, one in Menie in Aberdeenshire and Turnberry in South Ayrshire. Ahead of his visit to the UK, he described Britain as a 'great place' which is a 'true ally' of the US. Speaking about Sir Keir, he told BBC News: 'I really like the Prime Minister a lot, even though he's a liberal.' Confirming the pair will hold talks, Mr Trump said his 'state meeting with the Prime Minister' will be 'up in Aberdeen, which is the oil capital of Europe'. The president added: 'They should bring it back too. They have so much oil there. 'They should get rid of the windmills and bring back the oil. 'Cause the windmills are really detrimental to the beauty of Scotland and every other place they go up.' Campaigners at Uplift, which wants to see a rapid switch away from oil and gas towards renewable energy, criticised the president. Executive director Tessa Khan said: 'Donald Trump clearly knows nothing about the North Sea other than the view from his golf course. 'After 60 years of drilling, the UK has burned almost all of its gas and what is left is oil, most of which the UK exports, which contributes nothing to making sure the UK has an affordable supply of energy. 'More oil and gas drilling would not only lock us into an expensive energy source for far longer than is necessary, it will also contribute to the climate impacts – the wildfires, droughts and floods – that we're now seeing every year.' As well as meeting Sir Keir during his visit to Scotland, the president will also meet First Minister John Swinney. Mr Trump will also make a state visit to the UK in September, and he was asked if Parliament should be recalled from its summer break so he can address MPs. He dismissed the idea, saying: 'I think let them go and have a good time.' Mr Trump added he wants to 'respect King Charles' during the state visit, describing him as being a 'great gentleman'.

Brits' immigration fears at highest level since Brexit referendum - with issue now seen as bigger than stalling economy

Brits' immigration fears have hit the highest level since the Brexit referendum, according to a poll. YouGov research has found 53 per cent view control of borders as one of the three biggest problems facing the country. That was up two points over the past week, and more than the 48 per cent who cited the economy among their their main concerns. The score for immigration is a peak since June 2016, when the UK voted to leave the EU. The findings will cause alarm in No10 as Keir Starmer struggles to get a grip on the Channel boats crisis. Legal net migration is also still running at eye-watering levels, although it has fallen from record highs. Sir Keir was heavily criticised over a 'migrant merry go round' deal with Emmanuel Macron last week that will see some Channel arrivals sent back to France - but the UK take an equivalent numbers of other asylum seekers. Labour has been struggling to counter the threat from Reform as Nigel Farage vows to take a tough approach on immigration. The insurgent party has been recording a clear lead in polls. Last week Mr Farage took to a boat in the Channel to witness people attempting the perilous crossing. The YouGov research found 48 per cent of Brits regarded the economy as the main concern, down four points in a week. A third cited health, 23 per cent crime, and 21 per cent defence. Some 18 per cent said the environment with the same mentioning wefare. Housing and tax worries were lower at 16 per cent and 14 per cent respectively.

White House duped by In-N-Out April Fools' tweet about ingredient changes

The White House appears to have been duped by an April Fools' Day post from the fast-food burger chain In-N-Out. On Monday, the White House issued a press release touting the changes that food companies have made during President Donald Trump 's ' Make America Healthy Again ' push. One of these changes, the White House said, was that In-N-Out 'transitioned to 100% beef tallow.' The restaurant, however, has not transitioned to beef tallow, which is rendered beef fat. The White House linked back to an April 1 tweet from the restaurant, which was labelled an April Fools' Day prank. 'It's official. In-N-Out will be transitioning to 100% pure beef tallow,' the restaurant wrote. 'The change is set to become effective on 05/01/2025 at all In-N-Out locations.' In a reply post hours later, the restaurant posted an 'April Fools' GIF with the caption: 'Before this gets out of hand.' The White House did correctly claim that In-N-Out made changes to its recipes after the Food and Drug Administration 's announced it will phase out the use of petroleum-based synthetic dyes in the nation's food supply. The White House has since removed the beef tallow reference from its website, but the original line can still be seen in an email sent to reporters on Monday afternoon. Before this gets out of hand — ᶠᵃⁿ In-N-Out Burger (@innoutburger_) April 1, 2025 Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is leading Trump's 'Make America Healthy Again' push, has long promoted beef tallow as an alternative to canola oil and other seed oils. Last Thanksgiving, he even posted a video of himself deep-frying a turkey in beef tallow. "This is how we cook the MAHA way," Kennedy said in the video. Other restaurants have heeded Kennedy's concerns about seed oils. Fast food chain Steak 'n Shake announced it would begin cooking its shoestring fries in beef tallow in January, while salad chain Sweetgreen has eliminated seed oils from its menus.
