LOS ANGELES: Fresh off his leading role in Pixar's Elio, Filipino American teen actor Yonas Kibreab (pic) is showing no signs of slowing down as he shifts from reaching the stars to telling the truth.
At just 15, the rising talent is stepping into a new dimension of storytelling, not only as a voice actor but also as an executive producer in the upcoming animated indie feature 'Pinocchio & the Water of Life.'
A live-action adaptation of 'Solo Leveling' is currently in the works, with Byeon Woo-seok chosen to star as the lead.
The film, described by The Hollywood Reporter as a steampunk reimagining of the classic tale of the wooden puppet who wishes to become a real boy, is currently in post-production and aiming for a 2025 release through Asymmetric Studios.
'I loved voicing Pinocchio,' said Kibreab in an official statement. 'The animation is incredible—like nothing I've ever seen. Victor is a true artist, and being an executive producer on this project has been such an honor.'
Directed by Victor K, the project has an impressive voice cast that includes animation veterans such as James Hong, Fred Tatasciore, Rob Paulsen, Maurice LaMarche, Tom Kenny, Phil LaMarr, Candi Milo and Yeni Alvarez.
Kibreab's resume already reads like a seasoned professional's. From playing Phinny in Disney's Pupstruction to starring in Pretty Freekin' 'Scary,' and from a breakout performance in Hulu's 'Into the Dark: Blood Moon' to a role in Netflix's 'Sweet Tooth' Season 2, the young actor has shown remarkable range and prowess.
What many may not know is that Kibreab's entertainment journey started on the tennis court. Alongside his dad, he created tennis-themed content that went viral on platforms like Instagram and Vine.
His energy and charm eventually caught the attention of the US Tennis Association, which led to him becoming a 'kidcaster' at the US Open which was an early taste of the spotlight that would pave the way for his acting career. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Their performances brought storybook favourites to life on stage during Story Book Academy's theatre showcase featuring Pinocchio, Snow White, Peter Pan and Maleficent. The shows were staged by the all-child cast from diverse backgrounds, marking a milestone for the academy's growing performing arts community. The strong turnout was a mark of pride for the academy's mission of nurturing creativity, confidence and collaboration through storytelling and theatre. A special highlight was the staging of Maleficent, which featured four students from the Dignity for Children Foundation who received the academy's performing arts scholarship. In addition to Kaeley Ng Mei Shuen, three students – Aviela Nkechiamara Chukwu, Raoul Lee Tzyy Hao and Casey Chee Seng Quan were returning scholars. 'We're thrilled that so many families came to cheer on the children,' said academy director Jeanisha Wan. 'Our focus has always been on creating joyful, meaningful experiences through stories, not perfect performances, but real growth in confidence, imagination and connection.' The event also saw returning students take on emcee roles and ended with a mini 'Oscar Award' ceremony to recognise outstanding performers from past productions. Since its founding in 2020, The Story Book Academy has staged productions in malls and theatres, offering children opportunities to perform publicly and develop storytelling and roleplay skills.

Photos: Byeon Woo-seok/Instagram, Handout A live-action adaptation of the popular web novel and anime Solo Leveling is currently in the works, with Byeon Woo-seok chosen to star as the lead. Netflix confirmed the live-action adaptation and Byeon's casting in a release on Thursday, July 10. It also stated that fans can expect the South Korean actor to deliver an 'unforgettable portrayal' of the lead character, Sung Jin-woo. 'Sung Jin-woo will be brought to life by Byeon Woo-seok, one of Korea's most sought-after actors,' the streaming platform said. 'With his fitting nickname 'manjjitnam' or 'straight out of a comic,' he's set to deliver an unforgettable portrayal of Jin-woo's evolution and action-packed journey.' Written by Chugong, Solo Leveling is a 2016 web novel that tells the story of Sung Jin-woo, a low-rank hunter (the novel's term for human warrior) who gains supernatural abilities after a near-death experience. He rose the ranks — even surpassing the skills of the greatest hunters — ultimately inheriting the Shadow Monarch position, only for him to discover that he is the Monarch who can save humanity. The web novel was adapted into a webtoon, a video game, and an anime released in 2025, all of which became massively popular as well. The anime also bagged the Anime of the Year award in the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards last May. Solo Leveling will be co-directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, known for their work in the films Like A Virgin and Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds, respectively. 'The upcoming live-action series adaptation promises to feature vivid characters, dynamic action sequences, and exhilarating quests, brought to life by a world-class global VFX team. The series will also introduce viewers to fantastical dungeons and uniquely powerful monsters, setting a new standard for live-action adaptations,' Netflix added. Byeon started his entertainment career in 2010 as a model before embarking on an acting career six years later. He gained widespread recognition after starring as the lead in the 2024 K-drama Lovely Runner . Prior to the hit drama, he also starred in Record Of Youth, Strong Girl Nam-soon , and Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency. He was also cast in the upcoming drama The 21st Century Grand Prince's Wife. – Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network
