Graham Potter gives update on Lucas Paqueta's future as betting charges dropped
West Ham boss Graham Potter believes Lucas Paqueta remains committed to the Hammers in the aftermath of his betting charges being cleared. The Brazilian midfielder was charged with allegedly breaching FA rule E5 in 2023.
He was accused of spot-fixing matches by getting booked. But he has since been proven innocent following a lengthy investigation.
During the process, the former Lyon midfielder was linked with a move away from the London Stadium - Brazilian side Flamengo having emerged as potential suitors for Paqueta. Asked about the 27-year-old's future, Potter did not rule a move out entirely but believes that the midfielder remains committed to West Ham.
He said: "You never know for sure because anything can happen in the window with anybody. But the news is incredibly positive. If it had gone the other way, there would have been a whole other line of questions.
"Lucas is happy and committed. He is an important person in dressing room and at the club and we love him. We just want to help him enjoy his football.
"You can imagine on a personal level for him, having to fight those allegations was an incredible challenge for him. It has been a really tough period in his life and career. It is a credit to him and his family and everyone who has supported him that he has come through."
Paqueta issued a statement in the aftermath of the FA's decision. He wrote: 'Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations.
'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me – thank you for everything.'
Paqueta was signed from French side Lyon back in 2022 for a fee of around £51m. Since then, he has made 120 appearances for the London outfit, scoring 18 goals, while he also helped the Hammers win the Europa Conference League in 2023.
He still has two years remaining on his contract with West Ham with the option for a further year. Paqueta was strongly linked with a big-money move to Manchester City in 2023 but saw a move shelved.

Bizarrely Raskin, warming up on the sidelines, was booked by French referee Clement Turpin for apparently trying to interfere at a Plzen throw-in as the Czech side began to exert some pressure. However, when a driving run into the box by Antman ended with him being barged over by Vydra, referee Turpin pointed to the spot for a soft penalty and Dessers sent Wiegele the wrong way. However, the third soon arrived as Gassama grabbed his second when he bulleted in a header from a pinpoint Antman cross from the right. There were occasional moments of sloppiness in the Gers ranks throughout the rest of the second half but they remained unpunished. Raskin, Danilo, and Tavernier all came off the bench when the job was done, before in the 83rd minute Gers keeper Jack Butland made a good save from a powerful drive from Memic. After the negativity of Fir Park, it was a more positive performance from the home side although there has to be much more to come from Martin's men.

Man accused of lighting cigarette from memorial flame arrested in France
A man who is accused of lighting a cigarette at a major war memorial has been arrested in Paris on Tuesday, according to a French government minister. It comes after a video posted on social media appears to show a man stooping and lighting up in the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, before calmly walking away in front of a group of bystanders. The incident has sparked outrage across France, with officials condemning it as an insult to the memory of fallen soldiers. France's Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau described the act as "indecent and pathetic". "The man who desecrated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by lighting a cigarette with the memorial flame was arrested in Paris for violating a burial site, tomb, urn, or monument erected in memory of the dead. He was taken into custody and admitted the facts," he wrote on X. The memorial, which was first unveiled in 1920, contains the remains of a soldier killed in the First World War and serves as a tribute to all of France's fallen troops. "You cannot ridicule French remembrance and get away with it," wrote Patricia Mirallès, Secretary of State for Veterans and Remembrance, on X. "This flame does not light a cigarette, it burns for the sacrifice of millions of our soldiers," said Miralles. "This is an insult to our dead, to our history and to our nation."
