Dhami's meeting with Dhumma fails to yield a breakthrough

Indian Express03-06-2025
A day after the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) accused Damdami Taksal head Harnam Singh Dhumma of 'acting under the influence of government agencies', Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Monday met Dhumma in a bid to ease tensions.
Dhumma drew SAD flak after he declared that Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargarj would 'not be allowed to deliver any message' to the Sikh community on the 40th anniversary of Operation Blue Star on June 6.
'Gargarj is not recognised as a Panth-approved Jathedar and has already been declared 'tankhaiya' (under religious penalty) by the Panj Pyare by the Takht Patna Sahib,' Dhumma had said.
Questioning Dhumma's motives, SAD leader Parambans Singh Romana said, 'Is this being done at someone's behest? On one hand, we had a Taksal head who sacrificed his life for the dignity of the Akal Takht, while on the other, we have one acting as an agent trying to derail events meant to pay tributes to martyrs.'
Dhami's meeting with Dhumma failed to yield a breakthrough as the latter remained adamant on his position and warned of 'serious consequences' if his concerns were not addressed.
Speaking after the meeting, Dhumma said, 'We support peace during the June 6 events, but someone who lacks legitimacy cannot be allowed to issue messages on behalf of the Takht. If such actions continue, tensions will escalate. The SGPC has assured us that they will seek a resolution.'
Romana had also said, 'Every year, the Sikh community organises programmes to pay homage to the martyrs. Sadly, Harnam Singh Dhumma is trying to sabotage these commemorations.'

Family of Nakodar firing victim alleges govt ‘inaction', distraction from justice

Jalandhar: After finance minister Harpal Cheema on Tuesday raised the issue of the Justice Gurnam Singh Commission report on the incidents of sacrilege and police firing in Nakodar in 1986, and its action taken part missing from the assembly record, the family of one of the victims alleged that the issue was being used to distract from the real matter at hand while the AAP govt actively blocked efforts to bring the perpetrators of the Nakodar massacre to justice. During the assembly session, speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan announced the formation of a committee to find the missing report . In a statement issued on Wednesday, Baldev Singh, whose son Ravinder Singh of village Litran near Nakodar was one of the four Sikh youths killed in police firing, said that the 1986 Nakodar sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib, police firing, and the Justice Gurnam Singh Commission report — along with its missing parts — were not new issues, and both Cheema and Sandhwan actively raised these when they were in opposition. He said that AAP MLAs HS Phoolka and Kanwar Sandhu were the first to raise the issue strongly in the Punjab assembly, and later Cheema and Sandhwan also raised these issues during their time in opposition. "However, after being in power for over three and a half years, they are now using this issue cynically to distract from the real matter at hand. Since taking office, they have actively blocked efforts to bring the perpetrators of the Nakodar massacre to justice," said Baldev Singh. "We have sent seven letters to chief minister Bhagwant Mann, copies of which were also sent to finance minister Cheema and Speaker Sandhwan. Instead of addressing these concerns, they have shielded the perpetrators of the Nakodar police killings," he alleged. Baldev Singh also alleged that his request to Speaker Sandhwan on Sep 29, 2022, was later manipulated by the state's attorney's office to "mislead" the high court, resulting in the disposal of both of his petitions on Oct 7, 2023, even as these petitions were only possible because of AAP's initial support. "Despite these repeated efforts, we have yet to receive any tangible response or action on our grievances. This continued inaction has only compounded the pain and anguish of the victims' families, who have been waiting for almost forty years for justice and accountability. The AAP govt has not taken a single concrete step to deliver justice in the 1986 Nakodar police firing, the 2015 Bargari case, or the sacrilege cases of Guru Granth Sahib," he said. "If there is genuine commitment to justice, order a time-bound CBI inquiry into the 1986 Nakodar killings, the illegal cremation of four unarmed Sikh youths, and the disappearance of Part Two of the judicial report. File charges and arrest the police officials responsible for these atrocities. Without accountability, there is no closure. To this day, not a single perpetrator of Nakodar or Bargari has been brought to justice," he added.

3 threats for Golden Temple on 3rd day; SGPC chief to cops: ‘Wake up'

Amritsar: The committee that manages the Golden Temple on Wednesday received three fresh threat emails warning of an attack at the iconic Sikh shrine, taking the number of such messages to five within just 36 hours and sparking demands for quicker action. The latest threats came even as police were yet to trace the origin of the first email that was sent on Monday. Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said they had obtained some IP addresses, and the content of the emails suggested they had been sent from a south Indian state. "We are ensuring security and there is no need to worry," he added. Bhullar's assurances, however, did not calm down Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami, who asked the police and state govt to "wake up". "We informed the police immediately after receiving the first email, but there has been no concrete response. If such threats don't alarm the govt, what will?" he said. Dhami criticised the silence of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, saying they too had gotten the emails. Citing the deployment of Border Security Force (BSF) personnel around Golden Temple, Dhami called it a deliberate attempt to create fear and reduce the number of people visiting the shrine. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lợi ích khi giao dịch CFD Bitcoin IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "It seems like an orchestrated effort to terrorise the sangat (community). If not, then why hasn't the source of the emails been traced yet? Any govt with basic cyber capabilities can trace an IP in an hour," he added. Dhami said they had activated their own cyber teams, but the responsibility lied with the state. "Culprits must be exposed without delay," he added. Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring have expressed concern over the threat emails. Badal urged both Punjab and central govts to conduct a thorough investigation into the emails to apprehend the culprits, while Jakhar termed the threats a "symbol of the Punjab govt's failure".

In bypoll-bound Tarn Taran, where BJP got just 1,176 votes in 2022, Surjit Kumar Jyani is incharge

Chandigarh: The BJP on Wednesday appointed former minister Surjit Kumar Jyani as in-charge for Tarn Taran assembly constituency, scheduled for a bypoll after the death of AAP MLA Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal last month. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Former MLA K D Bhandari and party leader Ravi Karan Singh Kahlon have been appointed as co-in charge for the seat, considered to be a panthic stronghold. In the 2022 assembly polls, when BJP independently contested its first assembly election from Tarn Taran, its candidate Navreet Singh Hundal got just 1,176 votes, less than 1% of the total polled votes. The BJP candidate finished sixth, marginally above None Of The Above (NOTA) for which 1,168 electors opted. The candidate who finished fifth was an independent, Dr Sukhmandeep Singh Dhillon, who polled 1,315 votes. Dr Sohal of the AAP won by polling 52,935 votes, while Harmeet Singh Sandhu, who contested on the SAD ticket and was earlier elected thrice – once as an independent and subsequently as an SAD candidate, finished as the runner-up with 39,347 votes. On Tuesday, Sandhu, who quit the SAD last year, joined the AAP, triggering a buzz that the ruling party may field him in the bypoll. Congress candidate Dr Dharambir Agnihotri had finished third by polling 26,535 votes in 2022. The Tarn Taran assembly constituency is one of the nine segments that are part of the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency. Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh registered a landslide victory as an independent in the 2024 parliamentary elections, defeating his nearest rival Kulbir Singh Zira of Congress by 1,97,120 votes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Jailed MP Amritpal Singh's party Shiromani Akali Dal Waris Punjab De which was formed in January this year is also looking for a formidable face for the Tarn Taran bypoll. Amid this backdrop, the BJP, which earlier counted predominantly on the urban areas while its then ally SAD looked mostly after the rural areas, is set to test the political waters of Tarn Taran after a massive drubbing in 2022. "Since then, we have done a lot of spadework. We have been holding camps to enable people to avail benefits of various welfare schemes like Ayushman cards, e-Shram cards, and Awaas Yojana. We are reaching out to the people at the booth level. The scenario has changed a lot from what it was earlier. Many Akali families have come into the BJP fold. It is fast becoming a mindset of the people that it is the BJP which is going to save Punjab," said BJP leader Ravi Karan Singh Kahlon, who had a long association with the SAD in the past. He joined the saffron party in May last year. "Like what (chief minister) Yogi Adityanath did in UP to end gangsterism… things have come to such a pass in Punjab that people are now even afraid of moving around with earrings made of fake gold, fearing that they may end up having stitches on ears if snatchers mistook those for real gold," said also said there was "significant influence of RSS workers" in old Tarn Taran city, which would work in favour of the BJP. Kahlon also said a sizeable number of BJP councillors used to get elected in local polls in Tarn Taran when there was an SAD-BJP contested the November 2024 Dera Baba Nanak assembly bypoll on a BJP ticket, polling 6,505 votes – 5.25% of the total votes polled. The bypoll was necessitated after the sitting Congress legislator, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, was elected to Lok Sabha from Gurdaspur last year. AAP candidate Gurdeep Singh Randhawa was elected as MLA in the bypoll, securing 59,104 votes. He defeated Randhawa's wife and Congress candidate Jatinder Kaur Randhawa by 5,699 votes. "The BJP's vote share improved in Dera Baba Nanak than what was in the 2022 Punjab polls," said Kahlon. On SAD Waris Punjab De preparing in a big way for the bypoll, Kahlon said: "At one point of time Simranjit Singh Mann led party had also witnessed a boom but it later vanished. A similar thing is going to happen with Amritpal's party."
