5 memorable gaming moments that no one ever talks about - Reader's Feature

Metro27-04-2025
A reader highlights less well known games, such as Subnautica and Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons, for having some of gaming's most impactful moments.
When people talk about memorable moments in gaming you'll often hear familiar stories, such as the Bioshock elevator ride, the ending of The Last Of Us or perhaps even the fight against Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid.
Rather than discuss those again, I instead wanted to pick out five moments that have stuck with me just as much, but that perhaps don't get talked about quite so often.
All of the games discussed here are at least seven years old, but there will obviously be huge spoilers.
Frostpunk is a city builder in which your goal is to survive a world that has been plunged into an ice age. As the game reaches its climax, you're warned that a great storm is going to hit your civilisation. You prepare as best you can, then hold your breath as the wind batters your shelters and food supplies begin to run low in what is one of the most tense sequences in gaming. If you manage to come out the other side still alive, it's a brilliant feeling.
Having crashed on a planet covered mostly in water, your one hope seems to be a series of messages from a ship in orbit. You arrive at the given co-ordinates on an island that house a huge, impenetrable tower and as expected your rescuers enter the atmosphere to save you.
All of a sudden, however, the tower begins to move and by the time you realise it's actually a weapon it's too late for your would-be saviours. The moment is absolutely devastating and the way it unfolds in real-time, coupled with the incredible sound design, is just perfect.
A lot of gamers would argue that The Last Guardian is the weakest game in Team Ico's trilogy and your mileage will likely depend on whether you think the winged griffin-like creature is a clever piece of game design or just a pain in the backside. Whatever side you land on, however, Trico's tendency to not always do what you'd expect pays off brilliantly in a section in which the platform around you begins to give way.
Looking around for a way to escape, it soon becomes clear that you're going to have to leap towards Trico and hope that he catches you, which based on previous behaviour doesn't feel like a certainty. When he does throw out his tail for you to cling on to, it's not only a brilliant moment, but also one that creates an unbreakable bond that lasts the rest of the game.
This one has probably been talked about more than others on my list, but I had to include it as it's something that could only be achieved in a video game. For those that haven't played it, Brothers is a third person adventure game in which you control both brothers simultaneously, using the two halves of the controller. The game itself is very good, but it's the ending in which the older of the two brothers is killed that provides the truly memorable moment.
The scene itself is certainly emotional enough, but the masterstroke is in making the sense of loss physical, by forcing the player continue for the rest of the game using just half of the pad.
Journey is an amazing experience even if played alone, but throughout the game there is a chance that you'll be randomly paired up with another online player. You can only communicate with these players through a series of noises, yet rather than proving a hindrance it actually allows you to feel a deeper connection with your companion, as you help each other navigate the beautifully realised game world. More Trending
During my first playthrough I'd spent the best part of an hour with a companion and as I made the final climb through the snow they sat down on the ground and disappeared without a trace. Making that last part of the trek alone felt melancholic after that, and those five minutes of gaming still stick with me over a decade later.

Naked Gun star Liam Neeson's cheeky dig at man-of-of-the-moment Pedro Pascal

Liam Neeson joked about Last of Us star Pedro Pascal's packed work schedule, as the Taken actor made an appearance at an early screening of the reboot of 80s parody movie Naked Gun The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood at the moment, with the Chilean-American actor about to take on one of his biggest roles to date in the new Marvel movie Fantastic Four. ‌ And even Liam Neeson couldn't help himself, with the Naked Gun star making a cheeky dig about him at an early screening for his new movie. ‌ Neeson, 73, is starring as Frank Drebin Jr in the 80s parody's reboot, which is out in cinemas today, with r eviewers hailing it a "masterclass". Speaking at the New York screening, a video of the star has done the rounds on social media. ‌ Posted by entertainment reporter Jonathan Sim, the clips shows Neeson thanking his audience for going to see the movie. He jokes that the needs them to "please laugh out loud" at the funny moments. It comes after Taylor Swift sparks engagement rumours as fans spot Travis Kelce's lock screen Neeson goes on to quip: "Spoiler alert: there's no zombies, no superheroes, and Pedro Pascal isn't in this movie," with fans laughing at his comment. His joke highlights how Pascal's career seems to be going from strength to strength, with the 50-year-old cast in numerous new productions following 20 years of working his way up in smaller roles on TV and on stage. ‌ Those roles however have included the lead in Netflix series Narcos as well as Star Wars series The Mandalorian and HBO's hit show The Last of Us. He has also featured in films such as Wonder Woman 1984, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Gladiator II. This year, alongside Fantastic Four he will also feature in modern western Eddington as well as romantic comedy Materialists opposite Dakota Johnson. With his recent success, Parade magazine estimates his net worth at around $10 million. ‌ But despite his high profile, Pascal has managed to keep his private life largely under wraps. He made headlines back in March after he was spotted getting close to former Friends star Jennifer Aniston. The pair were spotted together in Los Angeles at a dinner that 'lasted three hours', as reported by The Mirror. They then spent the night at the Tower Bar at the Sunset Hotel in West Hollywood. Aniston and Pascal arrived separately after 8pm and left in separate ways three hours later, in photos seen by Daily Mail. Both opted for casual outfits for the evening and soon parted ways after having a conversation outside the parking valet area. ‌ Aniston and Pascal's dinner date comes amid speculation he might join her Apple TV series, The Morning Show. Despite the dating speculations, Pascal is thought to be single. Meanwhile, Liam has been romantically linked to Pamela Anderson, although they too are keeping quiet about their relationship status. Neeson was married to British actress Natasha Richardson from 1994, until she tragically died in 2009 following a head injury. ‌ The close bond between Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson has been the topic of conversation around the world as the pair continue to remain silent over whether or not they're in a relationship. But it looks as though the writing was on the wall as far back as last year when the Taken star declared his love for the former Baywatch icon. In an interview with People magazine, Liam, 73, candidly confessed to being "madly in love" with the mum of two. At the time, he told the publication: "With Pamela, first off, I'm madly in love with her." He added: "She's just terrific to work with. I can't compliment her enough, I'll be honest with you. No huge ego. She just comes in to do the work. She's funny and so easy to work with. She's going to be terrific in the film."

Liam Neeson takes a cheeky swipe at Pedro Pascal while promoting new film

Liam Neeson couldn't help but take a cheeky swipe at Pedro Pascal's incredibly packed schedule as he promoted the Naked Gun this week. The Taken actor is starring as Frank Drebin Jr in the reboot of the 80s parody, which is released in cinemas today. A new video has made the rounds on social media, showing the 73-year-old popping up at an early screening in New York and sharing a couple of words about his new project. In the clip, posted by entertainment reporter Jonathan Sim, he thanked the audience for coming before urging them to 'please laugh out loud' at any funny moments – of which there are plenty. 'Spoiler alert: there's no zombies, no superheroes, and Pedro Pascal isn't in this movie,' the action favorite added, to chuckles from the audience. His cheeky comments made light of the ongoing joke that Pedro is in every film or TV show at the moment – after he clocked up roles in The Last of Us, Eddington, Materialists and the Fantastic Four in the last few months alone. The internet's new husband is truly taking 'booked and busy' to a whole new level, and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, he will be appearing in the Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as Avengers: Doomsday, next year. Meanwhile, Liam has a very busy schedule of his own, and has been jetting around the world to promote the Naked Gun – while also remaining coy of rumors of a romance with his co-star, Pamela Anderson. Despite not confirming the speculation, they are said to be 'smitten' with each other and got very close on set, to film the 'strangest' sex scene of their careers. A bizarre montage showed Frank and Beth (Pamela) taking things to the next level during a romantic getaway, with a snowman joining them in the bedroom. Chatting to Metro at the New York premiere, writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand opened up about putting Liam through his paces, revealing the most 'absurd' thing they asked him to do on camera. 'This is a spoiler, but he has a great … very strange love scene that I believe has to be the strangest sex scene of his life,' Dan told us. 'Every day was the strangest thing,' Doug recalled. 'Every scene is like, 'Liam Neeson is doing this?'' The Naked Gun franchise is a hilarious parody of traditional police action dramas, but – without giving too much away – there are a few jokes that may straddle the line, to which Dan quipped: 'We're all about straddling things. More Trending 'You've got to look at that third rail and just touch it … you hope you don't electrocute yourself too bad but you want to get a little bit of a shock,' Doug insisted. 'We tried everything, and we just let the audience tell us,' his writing partner added. 'We would show it to friends, we would show it to test audiences, and if it got the laugh, then we got the laugh. 'Then we felt comfortable that that we landed on something good.' Wolfenstein 3 hopes reignited as live action TV show is announced

Amazon is developing a live action series based on Wolfenstein, as it continues to expand its roster of video game adaptations. There are so many TV and film adaptations of video games currently in production it's hard to keep up, between new seasons of The Last Of Us, animated Splinter Cell shows, another Street Fighter movie, an OutRun adaptation from Michael Bay, and many others. There's a chance some of them will not see the light of day (Netflix's take on Tom Clancy's The Division appears to be one such casualty) but Amazon, following the success of Fallout, has given the green light to a slew of projects based on video games over recent years. And now another one has been added to the pile, with a series based on the grandaddy of all first person shooters. According to Variety, Amazon is in development on a Wolfenstein live action series. While plot details are being kept secret, the official logline just about sums it up: 'The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.' The show is being created, written, and executive produced by Patrick Somerville, who has a pretty strong CV. He previously created Netflix's Maniac starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, along with HBO miniseries Station Eleven, which was nominated for seven Emmys. Wolfenstein developer MachineGames is involved too, with the studio's co-founder Jerk Gustafsson serving as an executive producer, alongside Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham via Kilter Films. If you're unfamiliar, Wolfenstein is a series of games set in an alternate history of the Second World War. The first two games by Muse Software were 1981's Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, which had a top-down perspective and were a very early example of a stealth game. The games remained little known until id Software purchased the rights and made 1992's Wolfenstein 3D – the precursor to Doom and the first widely popular first person shooter. More Trending Today, the series is synonymous with developer MachineGames, who rebooted the series in 2014, with Wolfenstein: The New Order and its sequel Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. These featured much more storytelling and social commentary, while maintaining a heightened sense of absurdity, and are presumably what the TV show will be based on. A third mainline game in the series has been rumoured for some time but never officially announced, and it's unclear what the studio is working on now following Indiana Jones And The Great Circle. Although they have hinted at a Quake reboot (also an id Software property) multiple times. The Amazon adaptation implies there's now a greater chance of a third game coming to fruition, if it isn't already underway. Job listings in 2023 suggested another sequel was in the works, and Bethesda's former head of publishing, Pete Hines, was very keen on the idea, but the poor sales of Wolfenstein 2 and its spin-offs has always left a third title in doubt. This Wolfenstein series is one of many video game adaptations currently in the works at Amazon. Along with Fallout and Secret Level, which are both getting second seasons, the company has green-lit shows based on Mass Effect, God Of War, and tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000 with Henry Cavill.
