The Brazil-Mexico Dalliance Is More Hype Than Substance

Bloomberg5 days ago
You'd be forgiven for thinking Brazil and Mexico are rushing away from its rivalry and towards something the looks a lot like an alliance. But what's blooming isn't impulsive — it's strategic.
Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his Mexico counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, have built a growing diplomatic rapport over the past 10 months, meeting four times at different events and holding a spat of phone calls. Contrast that with Sheinbaum's predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who skipped most summits. Sheinbaum even visited Brazil last year to participate in the Group of 20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, which López Obrador never did despite also having ideological similarities with Lula. Now, both governments are moving to deepen economic ties, with Brazil Vice President Geraldo Alckmin leading a delegation to Mexico in late August to explore potential commercial deals.

BP says it makes biggest oil and gas find in 25 years

Energy giant BP says it has made its largest oil and gas discovery this century as it shifts its focus away from renewable energy and back to fossil fuels. The UK-based firm said on Monday that it is conducting tests at the site in deep water off Brazil's west coast. The discovery could play a major role in BP's plans to increase crude oil production. Company executive Gordon Birrell says the discovery is "BP's largest in 25 years" and that the firm will explore building a production hub there. In February, BP slashed its planned investments in renewable energy and said it would spend billions of dollars more a year on its oil and gas operations, as it aims to boost investor confidence. BP said it had found a roughly 500-metre area of oil and gas at the Bumerangue block in the Santos basin, 250 miles (400km) off Brazil's west coast. It said the discovery was the company's biggest since the Shah Deniz gas field in the Caspian Sea in 1999. The find adds to BP's several other discoveries of energy reserves this year, including those in the Gulf of Mexico, which is called the Gulf of America by the administration of US President Donald Trump, and Egypt. "This is another success in what has been an exceptional year so far for our exploration team", said Mr Birrell, the firm's executive vice president for production and operations. BP's attempt to transform itself into a "net zero" energy producer has faced major hurdles since it put the plan into action five years ago. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic pushed it to a $5.7bn (£4.29bn) annual loss. It also took a $25bn hit two years later from writing off a stake in its Russian energy business after the start of the Ukraine war. BP's share price has also come under pressure as it pumped billions of dollars into renewable energy, while rival companies benefitted from soaring oil and gas prices in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. BP shares rose by a little over 1% in London trading after the announcement.

Border agents directed to stop deportations under Trump's asylum ban after court order, CBS News reports

By Christian Martinez (Reuters) -U.S. border agents were directed to stop deportations under President Donald Trump's asylum ban, CBS News reported Monday citing two unnamed Department of Homeland Security officials. The direction comes after a three-judge panel at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit on Friday partially granted an order that limited the asylum ban, saying it cannot be used to entirely suspend humanitarian protections for asylum seekers, according to CBS. Officials at Customs and Border Protection were instructed this weekend to stop deportations Trump's asylum ban and process migrants under U.S. immigration law, CBS said. Last month, a lower court judge blocked Trump's ban on asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border, saying that Trump had exceeded his authority when he issued a proclamation declaring illegal immigration an emergency and setting aside existing legal processes. The American Civil Liberties Union brought the challenge to Trump's asylum ban in February on behalf of three advocacy groups and migrants denied access to asylum, arguing the broad ban violated U.S. laws and international treaties. Trump has stepped up arrests of immigrants in the U.S. illegally, cracked down on unlawful border crossings and stripped legal status from hundreds of thousands of migrants since January 20. He has vowed to deport millions of people in the country illegally even as the administration has faced dozens of lawsuits across the country for its tactics.
