Bhubaneswar: In a move to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity, the state govt has announced the launch of an inter-state river linking project.
A high-level meeting was held on Thursday to discuss the initiative.
The project, with an estimated budget of Rs 1,800 crore, is set to roll out six pilot initiatives between FY26 and FY29. These initiatives aim to establish a model of effective water management, focusing on surface pipelines and river circuits to minimise displacement while promoting economic growth and environmental conservation.
A govt statement outlined the project's key objectives, including reviving around 150 reservoirs to enhance water retention capacity, reducing desertification in arid areas, managing floodwaters, stabilising irrigated lands, and ensuring a reliable drinking water supply for both urban and rural communities.

Managed and organized by Bare Necessities, a Miami-based nudist travel company, the 'The Big Nude Boat' trip which take place aboard the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship with an expected 2300 guests. Apart from valid tickets, one mandatory condition for travelers to step aboard the cruise is that they must agree to remain completely nude for most part of the journey. According to Bare Necessities, the purpose of the cruise trip is to help people get rid of the fear of social nudity and ensure they enjoy and leisurely and comfortable journey while soaking in the sun and the sea. When will the cruise journey begin? As per details, the 'The Big Nude Boat' cruise will depart Miami on February 3, 2026 and head on a 'bare-dice' 11-day journey across the Caribbean, including visits to mesmerizing islands like Great Stirrup Cay of Bahamas, St. Lucia and St. Maarten. Apart from the unique nudist experience, travelers will enjoy tons of fun activities on the cruise, such as LED parties, talent shows, and friendly sports competitions. The Norwegian Pearl also has a bowling alley, rock climbing wall, 16 types of dining options and 14 bars, including a whiskey lounge, that passengers can enjoy. Are there any rules to prevent indecent behavior? The cruise has specified certain rules to prevent rowdy behavior and public indecency by its passengers. The travelers can choose to be naked in public areas such as decks or buffets, when is ship is at sea or in port. However, passengers are required to wear clothes while the cruise is docked at the port. They can undress again once the ship departs from port. Passengers are also required to wear clothes while having food in the dining room. Additionally, no photography is allowed in the pool and dance area, while inappropriate touching and obscene acts are strictly prohibited, and could result in being deboarded from the ship. How much does the trip cost? According to details, prices for the 11-day day round trip, which includes visits to the islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Jamaica and Great Stirrup, start at $2,000 (about Rs 1.6 lakh) per person.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday offered prayers at the ancient Shiva temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu and also announced that grand statues of Chola emperors Rajaraja Chola and Rajendra Chola will be erected to honour their contributions to Indian history and culture. The Prime Minister's promise of constructing new and grand statues of Chola emperors has been welcomed and deeply appreciated by Gangaikonda Cholapuram Development Committee. Gomagan, the president of Gangaikonda Cholapuram development committee expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and said that this is a joyous moment for all of us. 'The visit of PM Modi to Gangaikonda Cholapuram is a joyous event for all of us. Since 2014, we have been celebrating the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival on behalf of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram development committee. In this context, we express our gratitude to Chief Minister Stalin for recognizing the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival as a state festival from the year 2022,' he said. He further said: "We thank PM Modi for his pledge to build a grand statue for Rajendra Chola, who is renowned for constructing a large navy amongst Indian kings and for leading Naval campaigns in the Southeast Asia." A special tribute was also paid to Rajendra Chola with the release of Rs 1,000 coin featuring his likeness, which brings pride and joy to all of us, Gangaikonda Cholapuram committee further said. Speaking during a special function at the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Ariyalur district, PM Modi said that the Chola empire represented a golden era of India, marked by achievements in architecture, governance, diplomacy, trade, and cultural integration. 'The Cholas established strong political and trade ties with Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Southeast Asia. It is a coincidence that I returned from the Maldives yesterday, and today I stand here in the land once ruled by these visionary kings,' he remarked.
