Numerous families traditionally involved in creating clay Ganesha idols are struggling as sellers bring in large quantities of idols from various regions of Maharashtra. These local artisans in Hubballi have crafted Ganesha idols for generations, using traditional techniques and eco-friendly materials. However, their livelihoods are now at risk due to mass-produced idols flooding the market from Maharashtra and some border districts in Karnataka. Imported idols are cheaper and more visually appealing, making it difficult for local craftsmen to compete. The local idol makers work throughout the year, carefully moulding and painting each idol by hand. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Blood cancer is taking our curious baby away from us! These artisans invest considerable time and effort in sourcing quality soil, preparing it, and crafting detailed features of each Ganesha idol. Local artisans are now seeking support from district authorities and cultural organisations to protect their craft. They emphasise the importance of preserving traditional idol-making techniques and maintaining the cultural heritage of Hubballi. The Maharashtra and other border districts' made idols arrive in large quantities just before the festival season, often undercutting local prices by 30-40%. These mass-produced pieces, while attractive and affordable, lack the personal touch and cultural significance of locally crafted idols, said Satish Murgod, an artist in Bammapur Oni. He explained that numerous families have relied on the traditional craftsmanship of Ganesha idols for their livelihood. Artists constantly face competition from various Ganesha idol vendors in their vicinity. Sellers with no technical expertise in idol making are flooding the market with Ganesha idols imported from Maharashtra, falsely claiming these are crafted from clay. Being part of a family that has traditionally specialised in creating clay Ganesha idols, sustaining the business has become challenging. Satish further mentioned that people are bulk-importing uncoloured Ganesha idols and employing local workers to paint them according to regional preferences. Despite these challenges, many families continue their ancestral craft, hoping that increased awareness about eco-friendly practices will help sustain their profession. They are also exploring ways to modernise their techniques while maintaining traditional aesthetics to remain competitive in the changing market. The situation highlights the broader challenge of balancing cultural preservation with market economics in traditional crafts.
