Daily struggle with the Modi regime to protect State's rights in 4-yr DMK rule: Stalin
Chennai, Aug 3 (UNI) Launching a scathing attack at the Centre which has been denying due rights to the state, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin today said it has been a daily struggle for his government with an adversarial BJP-led Union Government in the last four years to protect the legitimate rights of Tamil Nadu. 'With the previous AIADMK government having signed on a charter of slavery for the entry of NEET (entrance test for UG MBBS admissions), UDAY electricity scheme, hiking property taxes, Tamil Nadu has been facing severe economic consequences,' Stalin said in an epistle to the party cadre ahead of the death anniversary of DMK Patriarch and his father M Karunanidhi. To protect the rights of the state the DMK government has been using the floor of Parliament to raise these issues besides waging a legal battle in the courts, he added. 'While Sanskrit received financial largesse, it is a pittance for Tamil, recognized first as a classical language, from the anti-Tamil Union Government, which is bent upon imposing Hindi through the New Educational Policy (NEP 2020) which will result in the extinction of regional languages. The NEP will bring back caste-based education by denying opportunities to the marginalized and backward communities. Further, it is attempting to impose the hegemonic Aryan culture and is refusing to publish the scientifically validated Keeladi excavation, which establishes the antiquity of Tamil culture,' he said. 'At a time when Governors are being used to murder democracy in states where the BJP could not come to power, the Tamil Nadu Government's legal battle in the Supreme Court has established the supremacy of elected state governments. This has helped instill confidence in democracy not only for Tamil Nadu but for all states,' he said and blamed the principal opposition AIADMK in Tamil Nadu for teaming up with the BJP instead of strengthening the struggle. 'By aligning with the BJP, which is discriminating against the state, the AIADMK is committing a grave betrayal, leaving the AIADMK cadres themselves aghast,' he added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the ancient Brihadiswara Temple, holding a vessel of gangajal from Kashi, framed against the gopuram and the blue Tamil skies behind. That July 27 image from Gangaikonda Chozhapuram, tweeted by BJP leader H. Raja with the caption 'Living Gangai Kondan', went viral. The symbolism was thick, and hard to two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, beginning July 26, also brought the usual rain of inaugurations: infrastructure projects worth Rs 4,800 crore, including the expansion of the VO Chidambaranar Port, and a Rs 450-crore terminal at the airport. CULTURAL MESSAGING If all that is a necessary part of the script in the BJP's push for the 2026 assembly election, it was the cultural spectacle and messaging that dominated the debates. Modi released a commemorative coin in honour of Rajendra Chola I, listened to Odhuvar recitations of Shaivite hymns, and attended a spiritual concert by Ilaiyaraaja. Flanked by heads of prominent Shaivaite mutts, he described the Chola empire as a 'blueprint for Viksit Bharat', praising its maritime influence and administrative acumen as early examples of Indian hailed the gesture as a reclamation of Tamil legacy. This goes beyond political calculation—it reflects a sincere personal devotion,' he says this is belied by the fact that the BJP strategy in Tamil Nadu mirrors its approach in other states and social demographies, appropriating local or community icons to build cultural bridges. He feels Tamil Nadu's unique polity—grounded in linguistic rights, social justice and federalism—would defy such subsumption. 'People appreciate such gestures, but they will still ask tough questions: about flood relief, education funding, archaeological flashpoints, the Governor. Symbolism alone won't suffice.' Adding 6.5 lakh Bihar migrants as voters in TN is illegal, says PC
Chennai, Aug 3 (UNI) Joining the rising chorus against the Election Commission's move to grant voting rights to migrant workers from Bihar, facing disenfranchisement in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in that poll-bound state, Congress veteran P Chidambaram today termed it as alarming and patently illegal. The senior Congress leader also made it clear that the move, besides being gross interference in the rights of the electorate of Tamil Nadu to elect a government of their choice, it was an "insult" to the migrant workers. 'While 65 lakh voters are in danger of being disenfranchised in Bihar, reports of 'adding' 6.5 lakh persons as voters in Tamil Nadu is alarming and patently illegal. Calling them 'permanently migrated' is an insult to the migrant workers and gross interference in the right of the electorate of Tamil Nadu to elect a government of their choice,' he wrote in a post on X. Questioning why the migrant workers cannot return to their home state to cast their votes during elections, he pointed out that they were going back every year for performing the Chhath Puja. 'Why should the migrant workers not return to Bihar (or his/her home state) to vote in the assembly election, as they usually do? Does not the migrant worker return to Bihar at the time of Chhath Puja festival? The migrant worker has such a home in Bihar (or another state). How can he/she be enrolled as a voter in Tamil Nadu?' he asked, adding 'the SIR exercise is getting curiouser and curiouser. If the migrant worker's family has a permanent home in Bihar and lives in Bihar, how can the migrant worker be considered 'permanently migrated' to Tamil Nadu?' The EC, he charged, was abusing the powers entrusted to it. 'The ECI is abusing its powers and trying to change the electoral character and patterns of states. This abuse of powers must be fought politically and legally,' read the post, which also tagged the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Earlier, the DMK and its allies as well as the ultra-Tamil Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) of Seeman have opposed the EC's reported move to grant voting rights to migrant workers from the north, alleging that it is a ploy of the BJP to change the electoral demography of states where it has no foothold.
