Deontay Wilder told to retire immediately despite comeback win
The 'Bronze Bomber' picked up his first win since 2022 last week after knocking out heavyweight journeyman Tyrrell Herndon. Prior to the win, the American had suffered back-to-back defeats by Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker.
Since his three battles with Tyson Fury, Wilder has looked a shadow of his former self, failing to replicate his historic championship run that saw him win and defend the WBC heavyweight title between 2015 and 2018. After his disastrous last few years in the sport, many have questioned what more Wilder has left to give in the sport.
Speaking on his official YouTube channel, former world champion Froch was quick to share his views on Wilder's performance against Herndon on Friday night. The British boxing legend describe the fight as 'tune-up' fight for Wilder and says he thinks 'Herndon showed up to get beat up.'
'What's next for him [Wilder]? Has he got a career left? I just think that, I mean he's lost four of his last six fights… After that, you just think to yourself, he's finished," said Froch before adding: "It's all smoke and mirrors now. Everyone thinks he's back with that big punch, and they want to see him get in there… It would be nice to see him now probably hang his gloves up.'
Despite insisting Wilder should retire, Froch went on to name some potential future opponents for the 39-year-old. 'You got Fabio Wardley, Dave Allen, Derek Chisora, they're all fights now that would be exciting for this mix of heavyweights.' Froch also name-dropped Anthony Joshua - but feels that 'AJ' should retire. 'I think he's made enough money, I think he's been great for the sport… But in my opinion, AJ should finish," he said.
On the topic of a potential clash between 'AJ' and Wilder, Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn recently told Sky Sports: "I know he's [Wilder] a name that's been mentioned. There is a potential that AJ could fight Deontay Wilder in October, November, December, and then fight Tyson Fury, and then he's kind of got the full set in terms of every elite heavyweight of this generation, he's faced in the ring."
Former three-weight world champion Duke McKenzie believes a showdown between the pair should be next. The two stars have been long-time rivals, but have never settled the score in the ring. "If you look at it in the cold light of day, that's the only fight out there for either of them," the British boxing legend told talkSPORT.
"If either want to make any type of assault onto the world stage again and fight for a title, this has to be the final eliminator for the pair of them. Joshua hasn't got anywhere to go -- if you take Tyson Fury out of the equation, which would be the obvious fight that doesn't look like it would be made anytime soon -- then it's the only other fight that makes any business sense. Reputations on the line, for Joshua and Wilder, those two surely have to clash in their very next fight. There isn't anyone else out there for them to fight, they've got to fight one-another."

Nasser Djiga in Rangers transfer ‘talks' as £10m Wolves man targeted for loan move
The Burkina Faso international could be the latest addition to Russell Martin;s squad as new boss ramps up transfer activity Nasser Djiga is in talks over a move to Rangers, according to a report. The Wolves defender is discussing a possible loan move to Ibrox, with the Express and Sta r claiming that the English Premier League club want the 22-year-old to play regularly in order to adapt to British football. Djiga arrived at Molineux from Swiss champions FC Basel in February this year for a £10million fee on a five-year deal, but has only played a handful of times. After time on loan with Red Star Belgrade and Nimes earlier in his career, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira is keen for the centre back to get some UK football experience under his belt at a decent level, and the chance to cut his teeth at Ibrox would seem to suit all parties. Russell Martin is actively working to bolster is defensive options, with former Wolves skipper Conor Coady close to sealing a switch from Leicester City. Djiga's move is said to be a straight loan with no option to buy, given Wolves' high hopes that he can come back ready to play top level football in England. Liverpool's new goalie coach was so bad he was branded club's worst-ever keeper
Xavi Valero has returned to Liverpool as head goalkeeper coach after spells with Inter Milan, Real Madrid and West Ham, but his playing days weren't quite as prosperous A goalkeeping coach branded as Wrexham 's worst-ever keeper has rejoined Premier League champions Liverpool. Xavi Valero has returned to Anfield as the Reds' new head of goalkeeper coaching after a seven-year spell at West Ham. The Spaniard has carved out an impressive coaching career after first joining Liverpool under Rafael Benitez in 2007. The 52-year-old later followed his compatriot to Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid, before later linking up with the Hammers in the summer of 2018. However, Valero's playing career was less distinguished after it began with Spanish teams like Castellon and Lagrones in the late-1990s and early-2000s. Following spells in the Spanish Segunda Division and Segunda Division B, he arrived on British shores in January 2005. Valero's move to Wrexham happened after the club's first-choice goalkeeper suffered a thigh injury, leaving them without a senior shot-stopper. Denis Smith was Wrexham's manager at the time and made the decision to sign Valero on a one-month deal, despite previously only having seen video footage of him. His stint with the Red Dragons was both short and disastrous as he, conceded nine goals in three appearances in League One, dropping several howlers along the way. Valero was hooked off by Smith at half-time during his final game against Chesterfield after the keeper's teammates told the manager they weren't comfortable playing with him. Former Wrexham coach Kevin Russell previously revealed he had major reservations about the signing before it was even agreed. Talking to the Fearless in Devotion podcast, he said: "We got a video sent through of him. We were watching it with Denis, and there was a big crowd. Denis said, 'He looks alright, I think I might sign him.' I said, 'That might not even be him. I'm not comfortable signing him like that.' "We played Chesterfield away, and it's got be the worst f***ing 45 minutes I've ever had in terms of a goalkeeping experience. Denis goes, 'I'm f***ing taking him off.' I said, 'Take him off? I wanted to get him off after the first ten minutes.' Russell added: "I say that, but what a coaching career that boy has had. He must not work on catching the f***ing football." Valero's return to Liverpool follows the departure of Fabian Otte and Claudio Taffarel from the Reds' goalkeeping department. His arrival was announced alongside that of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who takes the position of Arne Slot's assistant coach after it was vacated when John Heitinga took over as the new Ajax boss this summer. In contrast to his playing days, Valero's talents as a coach are clear to see and not just isolated to assisting goalkeepers. He was once praised by former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres for helping to improve his finishing. Speaking in 2008, Torres said: "We've a Spanish goalkeeping coach and he has been a genius at telling me every week exactly what kind of task lies in front of me in the following match. Nobody has ever worked with me like this before. It's outstanding. "Basically, I know days before the next game exactly the best way to finish a chance against the keeper I'm about to face. Xavi Valero tells me precisely what each keeper tends to do – stay big, go down early, if they have a preferred side they try to push you to. It's vital information. I've refined the way I take chances as a result." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Andy Murray's split from wife Kim saw Wimbledon icon splurge on purchase before being pulled over by police
Wimbledon icon Sir Andy Murray has opened up on a difficult period in his relationship with wife Kim Sears, revealing a rare moment of impulsiveness from 2008 that ended in disaster As Wimbledon 2025 gets up and running, British tennis legend Sir Andy Murray has shared a rare insight into a turbulent period in his otherwise steady relationship with wife Kim Sears. The Scottish icon recalled an unexpected tale from more than 10 years ago when a temporary split from Sears led to a spontaneous purchase and a close encounter with the law. The couple tied the knot in 2015 and are widely seen as something of an iconic pairing on the tennis scene. Their relationship has withstood the immense pressures of Murray's career, including the nerve-wracking SW19 showdowns that kept spectators and family members alike on tenterhooks. From his historic Wimbledon title wins in 2013 and 2016 to the punishing matches that shaped his legacy, Sears has been a constant figure, standing by him through every triumph and setback. Together, they have four children and have forged a life grounded in mutual respect and collective resilience. However, the pair briefly went their separate ways in 2008, which left Murray in a state of shock. And the Glaswegian, who is due to be honoured with a statue outside the All England Club, has opened up about how he responded during a hurtful period in his life. During a recent live show (via the Daily Express), Murray revealed that he dealt with the emotional aftermath in a way that was completely out of the ordinary for him. He splashed out on a Ferrari, which he affectionately named "Barry the Ferrari." "I thought it was cool," the 38-year-old laughed. "The first day I took it out to drive, it got pulled over by the police because the insurance hadn't cleared. I got rid of it [after] a couple of months, because it wasn't really me." This incident sheds light on a more vulnerable aspect of Murray, who is typically known for his stoic public persona. However, there are rare exceptions to that rule, like the occasional tear shed on Centre Court. The temporary separation from Sears proved to be a turning point, ultimately fortifying their bond. Since getting back together, they have tackled life's hurdles side by side, from the pressures of Murray's career to the delights and challenges of marriage and raising children. The couple began their romance in 2005. Kim - the daughter of player-turned-coach Nigel Sears, who has worked with Emma Raducanu - immediately clicked with Andy due to their shared passion for tennis. They announced their engagement in 2014 and married the following year. The family now resides in Surrey with their son and three daughters. With Andy having hung up his rackets and coaching duties on hold, he theoretically has more time for family life. However, Kim playfully hinted that this isn't quite the reality as she joked: "He is playing so much f***ing golf." Despite the jest, it's clear their partnership has only strengthened over the years. Even if Murray does spend more time on the fairways than Kim might like. Murray recently told The Guardian he wouldn't be attending Wimbledon this year unless his children want to attend. And after 20 years together, Kim may be content with tennis commitments being put on hold.
