'Forced to fight in war': Lawyer moves Madras HC to secure release of Cuddalore student allegedly detained in Russia

CHENNAI: A lawyer has moved the Madras high court seeking a direction to the Indian External Affairs Ministry to take necessary steps to secure the release of Kishore Saravanan, a Cuddalore native, allegedly held illegally in Russia and facing possible deployment to the Ukraine war front. Moving the plea as a habeas corpus petition, advocate A P Suryaprakasam contended that Kishore, who went to Russia to study medicine, was forced to fight in the war of a foreign country. If he is not secured by the Indian govt, his life may be in grave danger. According to the lawyer, on July 21, the English news daily, The Times of India, published a report about the plight of the student from Tamil Nadu fighting the war on behalf of the Russian govt. Therefore, as a concerned citizen, the advocate made a representation dated July 21 to the Union External Affairs Ministry, the Tamil Nadu Home Ministry, and the DGP of Tamil Nadu Police, requesting them to secure the freedom of the unfortunate student, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Blood cancer is taking our curious baby away from us! BSE vice-president Nihar arrested

Cuttack: The police on Sunday arrested the vice-president of the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) for his alleged involvement in the paper leak of special Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET)-2025, a senior officer said. The BSE was supposed to hold the special OTET-2025 on July 20. However, the Board was forced to postpone the examination after a handwritten question paper with answers went viral on social media a day before, the police officer said. 'During the investigation, clear-cut negligence of BSE vice-president Nihar Ranjan Mohanty was found. He was having a suspicious relation with prime accused Jitan Moharana, who was working as a data entry operator at the office of the BSE,' said Vinaytosh Mishra, Director General of Police (Crime Branch). So far, eight persons, including the BSE vice-president and a data entry operator, have been arrested in the question paper leak case, he said. During the investigation, the police found that Jitan Moharana had first circulated the handwritten question paper to two other accused persons, and then it went viral on social media. When the Crime Branch started investigating how Moharana was able to get access to the question paper, as he didn't have the authority, it was found that the vice-president was coordinating with a Bhopal-based agency for printing of the question paper, Mishra told reporters here. As per protocol, Mohanty only had access to the question paper using an ID and password. He was supposed to proof-read the question paper, make necessary corrections and then delete it from the computer, he said. 'However, we found that he had not deleted the question paper from his laptop and gave its access to data entry operator Jitan Moharana even though he has no business with dealing with the question set,' the DGP (Crime Branch) said. While examining the call records, the Crime Branch found that Mohanty had telephonic conversation with Jitan Moharana for more than 100 times beyond the official hours during the past three months, he added. The DGP (Crime Branch) said Moharana had no role in the conduct of the examination. Still, the vice-president had deliberately given him laptop access, which helped him leak the question paper. So, both have an equal role in the question leak case. The police will now start a financial investigation into the question paper leak case, he said, adding, 'We are also trying to find out whether any other person was involved in the case or not.'

ED arrests Odisha-based firm's MD

Bhubaneswar: Following day-long multi-city searches, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested the Managing Director (MD) of an Odisha-based company in connection with a fake bank guarantee scam, an official said on Saturday. Partha Sarathi Biswal, Managing Director of M/s Biswal Tradelink Private Limited (BTPL), was arrested on Friday after searches in Bhubaneswar and Kolkata at locations linked to the Odisha-based company, said an official statement. After the arrest, Biswal was sent to ED custody. As per the ED, the Central agency recorded an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) and initiated investigation into the fake bank guarantee scam on the basis of a case registered by Delhi's Economic Offences Wing (EOW), on November 11, 2024. The case was registered against BTPL, its directors and others, for providing fake bank guarantee, which was submitted to Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI). Investigation by the ED revealed that BTPL fraudulently arranged and submitted fake bank guarantees of Rs 68.2 crore along with forged SBI endorsements and fabricated confirmations for an SECI tender. For providing this bank guarantee, Rs 5.40 crore was received by BTPL from Reliance Power, the ED statement said. Evidence confirms the use of fake documents in the name of certain banks and fake email IDs in the name of SBI, the probe agency said. The probe reveals BTPL, a small company incorporated in 2019, maintained multiple undisclosed bank accounts and carried out transactions disproportionate to its declared turnover. 'Many violations of the Companies Act are found. No statutory records are found at registered address -- such as books of accounts, shareholders' registers. Dummy directors are found to be used just to sign the documents,' the ED statement said. At least seven undisclosed bank accounts of the company were found and proceeds of crime of crores of rupees have been traced to these accounts. Sources said the Central agency, during investigations, found that the company, its directors and associates were engaged in the issuance of fake bank guarantees against a commission of 8 per cent.
