Katy Perry Endures Midair Malfunction as Butterfly Prop Plunges During Concert
Katy Perry had a near-disastrous moment at her San Francisco concert Friday as the singer's giant butterfly prop plunged several feet while the singer was riding on it. One of the set pieces of the Lifetimes Tour features Perry saddled atop the butterfly prop as it floats above the audience during her performance of 'Roar.' However, at the Chase Center on Friday, the prop suffered a brief malfunction and suddenly descended several feet mid-flight, startling Perry and likely the crowd below her: More from Rolling Stone Katy Perry Closes Australia Concert With Tears Amid Orlando Bloom Split Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom Break Up: A Complete Timeline of Their Relationship Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom End Engagement, Split After 9 Years After the initial scare, Perry calmly collected herself and — once the butterfly steadied — jumped back into 'Roar.' The rest of the performance continued incident-free. Perry later joked about the near-disaster on Instagram, sharing a screen-grab of a close-up of her face the exact moment the butterfly dropped. 'Goodnight San Fran,' she quipped. The 'Roar' incident marks the second time this summer that a floating concert prop nearly put the artist and the audience at risk: In late June, Beyonce faced a similar situation when her flying car tilted and stalled above a Houston crowd during '16 Carriages,' causing a brief delay (and the song's temporary removal from the Cowboy Carter Tour set list, until the car was replaced with a horse). As People notes, Perry endured a previous stage malfunction during the tour's Australian leg when a flying sphere she rides in began tilting mid-performance, forcing her to cling to the cables connected to the sphere. Katy Perry Fan Faints on Stage During ‘The One That Got Away' Duet
During the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' section of the Lifetimes Tour stop in Detroit, Katy Perry welcomed four young fans onto the stage. Two of the girls chosen for the opportunity were plucked from the upper seating area of the Little Caesars Arena and made their way down to help perform 'The One That Got Away.' But when it came time to start the song after about a minute and a half of greetings, one of the fans fainted. Perry immediately rushed to the young girl's side as she sprawled out on the stage. The arena began chanting 'McKenna' as crew members monitored her and alerted medics. 'It's so much. Sometimes you're so brave and you can get on stage, and it's overwhelming. I understand that feeling,' Perry said after leading the crowd in a prayer. 'Dear God, we pray for McKenna, that she will come back fully and brighter and better than ever. Amen.' Later in the night, during 'Roar,' the singer shared an update with the audience. 'McKenna's doing great, by the way,' she said. Last month, while performing 'Roar' in San Francisco, Perry endured a scare of her own when her butterfly prop plunged several feet while she was riding on it. Perry collected herself after the initial startle and resumed the song when the set design was stabilized. The rest of the performance continued without incident. 'I always remember the audience is a hybrid of different types of people. It's Number One fans, and then it's just voyeurs. It's people that only know me for one song, and then people that know 'Simple.' It's such a smorgasbord,' Perry told Rolling Stone ahead of the Lifetimes Tour. 'We're giving BPM. We're giving unity. We're giving dance. We're giving empowerment. We're feeling seen, and we're connecting with strangers. I have a responsibility to the audience to give them that singalong, to create that moment, and to bring out some nostalgia. But as an artist, I have a responsibility to myself to stay true to my art.'
