Before arriving in Las Cruces, Ferme served as the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Cincinnati. Before Cincinnati, Ferme served as dean of the College of Arts and Letters at Northern Arizona University and divisional dean for the Arts and Humanities at the University of Colorado. Ferme's hiring followed the 2022 resignation of former NMSU president John Floros.

FEMA said financial assistance is available to eligible homeowners and renters and that the federal agency may be able to help with serious needs, displacement, basic home repair costs, personal property loss or other disaster-caused needs.
