Syria to hold first parliamentary elections since Assad's fall in September - Region
Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, chairman of the Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections, told state news agency SANA that elections will take place between Sept. 15 and 20.
They will be the first to take place under the country's new authorities after the fall of former President Bashar Assad in a lightning rebel offensive in December.
One third of the 210 seats will the appointed by interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, with the rest to be elected.
In a recent interview with the Erem News site, another member of the elections committee, Hassan al-Daghim, said an electoral college will be set up in each of Syria's provinces to vote for the elected seats.
A temporary constitution signed by al-Sharaa in March called for a People's Committee to be set up to serve as an interim parliament until a permanent constitution is adopted and general elections held, a process that could take years.
The announcement of impending elections comes at a time when the country is increasingly divided in its views of the new authorities in Damascus after sectarian violence broke out in the southern province of Sweida earlier this month.
The fighting killed hundreds of people and threatened to unravel Syria's fragile postwar transition.
The violent clashes, which broke out two weeks ago, were sparked by tit-for-tat kidnappings between armed Bedouin clans and fighters from the Druze religious minority.
Syrian government forces intervened, ostensibly to end the fighting, but effectively sided with the clans.
Some government fighters reportedly executed Druze civilians and burned and looted houses. Israel intervened, launching airstrikes on government forces and on the Defense Ministry headquarters.
Israel said it was acting to defend the Druze minority -- though many view this as a pretext to push Syrian government forces further from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, in line with its demands to demilitarise southern Syria.

Nada Mustafa India's automobile exports surged by 22 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of the 2025–26 financial year, with total shipments reaching 1,457,461 units between April and June, up from 1,192,566 units during the same period last year. Russian Scientists Discover Ancient Whale Remains Beneath Retreating Glacier
Nada Mustafa Russian scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) have uncovered a significant concentration of ancient whale remains on Wilczek Island, part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, according to TV BRICS. The discovery was made amid research on permafrost dynamics and glacial retreat, as reported by the official website of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation. According to AARI researcher Nikita Demidov, satellite image analysis and on-site measurements showed that the island's glacial dome split into two sections in under 20 years, exposing several square kilometres of marine terrace. This newly revealed area contains numerous well-preserved whale skeletons, some partially thawing at the glacier's edge. The concentration and condition of the remains suggest a rapid sea level change episode in the high Arctic within the past few thousand years. The degree of preservation reportedly increases with proximity to the glacier, indicating long-term entrapment in permafrost conditions. Egypt 2nd humanitarian aid convoy enters Gaza with 1,500-ton supplies - Foreign Affairs
Egypt's second convoy passed through the Karm Abu Salem crossing on its way to Gaza, carrying 1,500 tons of food and personal care supplies. The second convoy, organized by the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) and the National Alliance for Civil Development Work (NACDW), was rerouted a few kilometres to the nearby Karm Abu Salem crossing, operated by Israel, to be inspected before being allowed into southern Gaza. According to the ERC, the convoy comprises 135 trucks carrying approximately 1,500 tons of aid. It consists of 965 tons of food packs, around 350 tons of flour, and 200 tons of personal care supplies. An Al-Qahera News reporter, standing in front of the Rafah crossing, quoted ERC officials as confirming that each pack of food can sustain a seven-member family from seven to 10 days. On Sunday, ERC and NACDW launched their first aid convoy to Gaza after months of blockade. The convoy, named Zad Al-Ezza: From Egypt to Gaza, consisted of over 100 trucks, carrying 1,200 tons of food supplies, including approximately 840 tons of flour and 450 tons of food baskets. On Saturday, Israel announced a limited tactical pause in its military operations in parts of Gaza to allow the delivery of aid to starving Palestinians. This came after a joint statement by 25 Western countries and the EU's crisis commissioner on Monday, calling for an immediate end to Israel's genocidal war in Gaza. The joint statement condemned the Israeli army's aid delivery model, which exacerbated the mass starvation in Gaza. It also warned against any further attempts aimed at forced displacement or settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories. The passage of the two convoys follows global outrage over Israel's five-month blockade and the 'flour massacres' committed by the occupation army at Gaza Humanitarian Foundation's (GHF) aid distribution centres.
