Lynch: Liverpool youngster set to step up amid summer exits

Liverpool's Youth Gamble, Chiesa's Exit Path and Rio Ngumoha's Rise
Rio Ngumoha Pushing for Senior Minutes
In a summer dominated by speculation and reshuffles, few prospects have seized opportunity like Rio Ngumoha. Speaking on The Media Matters Podcast for Anfield Index, David Lynch highlighted the youngster's rapid pre-season rise. 'He's grasping his chance,' Lynch said, adding, 'everybody's been very impressed with him.'
Ngumoha has shown signs he could be more than just a squad player. 'He was very very good again,' said Lynch, referencing the AC Milan game. After seeing him at Preston, Lynch expected League Cup or FA Cup minutes, but now concedes, 'maybe we see a Premier League debut from him.' One particular moment stood out for Lynch, a left-footed shot that tested the keeper. 'He needs to be powerful shooting on his wrong foot… it creates doubt in defenders' minds.'

As Liverpool prepare for the post-Diaz era, the club is clearly banking on homegrown talent like Ngumoha. But Lynch raised a concern: 'If you only have four [senior forwards] and then Salah goes away and one of them gets an injury, you are starting Ngumoha for an awful lot of games.'
Chiesa's Exit on Course
The conversation inevitably turned to outgoings, and Federico Chiesa's name surfaced once again. Lynch addressed the situation candidly. 'We've said for a while on this podcast… Italy was going to be his destination.'

Inter Milan's pursuit of Ademola Lookman could be key, with Lynch confirming: 'Strong suggestions in Italy that if that happens… they're looking at Federico Chiesa to come in.' From Liverpool's side, the motivation is clear: 'If Liverpool can get their money back, that 10 million from Atalanta or whoever, they will do it.'
For Liverpool, this was a financial manoeuvre rather than a long-term investment. Lynch added, 'There was always going to be Italian clubs interested in him… they would largely make it back.' A move back to Serie A, then, appears the likeliest outcome.
Midfield Restructures and Small-Squad Strategy
Much of the discussion focused on how Liverpool are balancing depth with opportunity. The club's desire for a 'small squad' has clear implications. 'Arne Slot's talked about that,' Dave Davis observed, 'he's not afraid to say things like Frimpong could go right, Wirtz up, Szoboszlai played there.'
Photo: IMAGO
Lynch admitted the forward line remains unclear. 'What does this forward line end up looking like? It's very hard to ascertain.' If both Chiesa and Nunez leave and only one replacement arrives, Liverpool could rely heavily on Ngumoha, Frimpong and even Szoboszlai out wide.
Lynch's view is measured but firm. 'For me… five senior options and a sixth like Ngumoha, that would help his development.' But if only four arrive, it could quickly become unsustainable: 'You're reshuffling five or six positions to make it work.'
Recruitment Priorities and Unanswered Questions
While the summer exits create obvious gaps, the incoming picture remains opaque. Lynch was clear about the club's plans. 'There's going to be a centre half signed and there's going to be a forward.' But who comes after that is unclear. 'It's hard to judge how many they're going to sign.'
Fofana has been mentioned, but Lynch stated plainly, 'I just don't personally know about this link.' Instead, the conversation returns to roles and pathways. 'If Isak is signed, someone like him [Fofana]… would be kind of perfect to be a foil all the way across the front line.'
Photo: IMAGO
The one certainty is that Liverpool's transfer window, and Ngumoha's role in it, is far from over. As Lynch summed up: 'There's such a long way to go… it's like pin the tail on the donkey trying to guess at the moment.'

Browns claim OT Kilian Zierer off waivers

The Browns claimed offensive tackle Kilian Zierer off waivers, the team announced Sunday. The Falcons waived Zierer, a native of Munich, Germany, last week. The Browns also announced they waived fullback Troy Hairston and wide receiver Winston Wright. Zierer did not begin playing football until the age of 16, but with a wingspan of 83 5/8 to go with his 6-foot-7, 304-pound frame, Zierer earned a college scholarship. He played at College of the Canyons and was the No.1 JUCO prospect at his position, according to Rivals, when he signed with Auburn. Zierer started every game at left tackle for the Tigers in 2022. He signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2023 but went on injured reserve late in training camp with an ankle injury. In 2024, Zierer spent the season on the Texans' practice squad as part of the International Player Pathway Program.

F1 fans make same complaint about McLaren as Piastri averts disaster with Norris

Oscar Piastri admits he was always facing an uphill battle to overtake Lando Norris after his McLaren teammate's one-stop strategy paved the way to victory at the Hungarian GP and left many of Piastri's fans complaining about favouritism. Norris clung on with worn tyres as Piastri loomed behind him in the final laps, with the Briton's race victory cutting the Aussie's championship lead to to nine points heading into the mid-season break. The McLaren teammates avoided a near-disaster on the second-last lap when Piastri tried to pass Norris and nearly collided with his teammate when he locked up a wheel. Fortunately, the incident didn't prove costly but the Aussie's move earnt a rebuke from his team. "Remember how we go racing, Oscar," came the warning from his race engineer, Tom Stallard. Piastri tried everything to overtake Norris in a tense finish but it was his teammate that clung to victory in another one-two finish for McLaren, with Mercedes driver George Russell finishing third. Pole-sitter Charles Leclerc could only manage fourth, while four-time reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished way back in ninth. The Aussie driver admitted that overtaking Norris was always going to be "much easier said than done", despite closing in to within touching distance of the race leader in the closing stages. It was a victory shaped as much by smart strategy as gritty driving. Norris briefly dropped to fifth on the first lap but made his tyres last to stop only once, while Piastri changed twice. Fans question McLaren as Oscar Piastri has to settle for 2nd "I pushed as hard as I could. I think after I saw Lando going for a one [stop], I knew I was going to have overtake on track, which is much easier said than done around here," Piastri said after the race. "I tried a few things, it was a gamble either way, and today unfortunately we were just on the wrong side of it. "The team did a great job, the car really came alive in the second half of the race, and the car's been great all weekend – thank you to the team. I'm looking forward to a couple of weeks off." While Piastri accepted his teammate's win with class, the victory for Norris left many fans questioning the contrasting pit strategies that appeared to favour the British driver. So McLaren wants Lando Norris to win. I get it - he is the senior driver, been around in the team for years. But Zak Brown should stop pretending he has two No. 1 drivers in the team. At this point they will do anything to favour Norris on strategy over Piastri. #HungariangGP #F1 — Payel Roy Maitra (@PayelRoy) August 3, 2025 Every driver gets hard done by the strategy from time to time, but it can't be a coincidence anymore the amount of times Oscar Piastri gets screwed by the strategy to the benefit of Lando Norris. May as well rebrand the team to McLando. #HungariangGP #F1 #Mclaren — lachie (@lachxii) August 3, 2025 Nothing much to say after this GP other than….Ferrari not listening to Leclerc. McLaren favouring Lando over Oscar at the same GP as last year (tainted first win). & Max Verstappen being out on a strategy which I'll never understand.#F1 #HungariangGP #MV1 #MV33 #Formula1 — OK3ZZY (@OK3ZZY) August 3, 2025 This is on the team and suck their Papaya Rules. Poor Oscar. It could've been a one stop. 👎🏻 #HungarianGP — ash ✎ (@endpaige) August 3, 2025 Oscar was never passed on track but loses the #HungariangGP … What a hollow victory for @LandoNorris Bad luck @OscarPiastri That's a bullshit thing @McLarenF1 did to you. @F1 — The Huski (@Huski67) August 3, 2025 Oscar is battling Norris and the team. If he wins this championship, it will be embarrassing for Norris #HungarianGP — Amu⚠️ (@amogelang_me) August 3, 2025 Lando Norris claims victory after one-stop strategy Piastri found himself trailing Norris after being stuck behind pole-sitter Leclerc in the opening stages, before making an early pitstop. The move proved decisive as McLaren opted for the one-stop strategy with Norris that ultimately proved the difference. When race engineer Will Joseph asked Norris on the radio, 'Lando, 40 laps on the hard tyre, you up for it?', the Briton replied: 'Yeah, why not?'. RELATED: Oscar Piastri responds amid uproar over Aussie's act on podium F1 driver in danger of being axed after incident with Oscar Piastri The Aussie steadily cut into Norris' lead in the latter stages of the race but the British driver held on with old tyres to take the win. "I'm dead. It was tough, it was tough," Norris said. "The final stint, with Oscar catching, I was pushing flat out. "Good racing. Good strategy. Good call," was how Norris summed it up on the team radio afterwards. For the dominant McLaren drivers, it was their seventh 1-2 finish of the season and the team's 11th victory in 14 races in 2025, extending their lead over Ferrari to 299 points in the constructors' championship. Russell took third for Mercedes after fighting his way past Leclerc in a contest that earned the Ferrari driver a time penalty for nearly colliding with Russell. Leclerc was 'frustrated' after failing to make more of his stunning drive in qualifying to take pole. A day after calling himself "useless" and questioning whether Ferrari might need to replace him, Lewis Hamilton ended up where he started - in 12th. While Fernando Alonso took Aston Martin's best result of the season with fifth on a slow track that suited his car. Gabriel Bortoleto was a surprise sixth for Sauber and Lance Stroll seventh in the other Aston Martin. with AAP

Gus Bradley's son joins 49ers, creating a unique father-son dynamic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — As a longtime NFL coach, Gus Bradley rarely got the opportunity to watch his son, Carter, play football in person during his career in high school and college. Fall weekends were spent preparing his teams for games as either an assistant or head coach as Carter played quarterback in high school in Florida and then college at Toledo and South Alabama. Now the two are part of the same team after Carter Bradley signed a contract last week with San Francisco, where Gus is in his first season as a defensive assistant. "He's really excited. I can tell you that," Gus said Sunday. 'We haven't had much conversation. It's kind of been a whirlwind when that happened. But I know he's really excited to be here.' Gus Bradley said his relationship with Carter has always been more father-son than coach-player with the focus being more in life lessons such as how to respond to being cut than how to decipher a quarters defense. They had those types of conversations just after Carter was waived by the Raiders before the start of training camp. Gus got a heads up that the Niners planned to bring Carter in for a tryout last week, asking if he would be OK with it. 'I said, 'Yeah. But as far as you know, that's Carter Bradley and I'm Gus Bradley and we're separate,'" Gus said. 'You never want to put the organization in a tough position and that's not how this organization operates. It's too competitive. You only have so many roster spots.' Carter Bradley took part in the tryout with several other players last Wednesday. Gus and Carter talked briefly after the workout and Gus said goodbye before he headed into a meeting, figuring that Carter would be sent on a plane home right away. Gus came out of the meeting later that day and Carter was still at the facility waiting for word for what would come next. Carter got the news later that day that he had made the team. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Carter looked so good in the tryout and on a few dozen plays last preseason with Las Vegas that he earned the spot as the team's fourth QB. 'That's what I appreciate about them,' Gus said. 'It wasn't like 'Gus, hey we'll give you a heads up. Here's what we're going to do.' It was truly he's Carter Bradley, I'm over on the defensive side and we'll handle it that way.' Gus Bradley acknowledges he has more interest in Carter's performance than other offensive players but is able to compartmentalize it during practices when he is focused so intently on the defensive side of the ball. Sometimes it will take until film review later for him to see what Carter did on a certain play. 'I'm not going to lie. I'm still a parent, and he's here," Gus said. "But I thought it would be where you would be constantly looking. How's he doing? It it really is not that. It's Gus, where did that play hit. You can't watch what's happening on the offense and watch the whole defensive and do that.' Notes The Niners had the day off from practice headed into their first week with an exhibition game. San Francisco will practice on Monday and Tuesday and then take a day off before hosting a joint practice on Thursday against Denver. The teams will then play Saturday night. ... The 49ers signed WR Robbie Chosen and released WR Marquez Callaway. ___ AP NFL:
