Worrying rise in ganja buds smuggling with millions seized this year

PETALING JAYA: The Customs Department has observed a worrying rise in ganja buds smuggling, with over RM6.08 million worth of the highly potent organic drug seized this year.
Its assistant director-general (enforcement) Raizam Setapa @ Mustapha said that to date, six seizures involving ganja buds have been made at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Courier Centre.
"Our investigations showed that all six shipments originated from a neighbouring country and were intended to be shipped to Europe.
"These shipments were declared as books, toys, and clothes to avoid detection," he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Customs Department office here today.
Raizam added that the latest attempt to ship out these drugs was detected at around 2.30 pm on April 29.

Pahang Customs foils bid to smuggle RM4.4m e-waste, aluminium via false declarations at Port Klang

BENTONG, July 3 — The Pahang Customs Department has foiled two attempts to smuggle in e-waste and aluminium scrap from overseas, seizing seven containers worth an estimated RM4.4 million at North Port, Port Klang. Its director Mohd Asri Seman said the simultaneous operations on May 21 were carried out by the Bentong Customs Enforcement Division in collaboration with the Selangor Department of Environment. 'In the first raid at 1.15pm, three 40-foot containers were found to contain 46,726kg of e-waste valued at RM700,890, believed to have been imported without a permit or proper customs declaration,' he told a press conference today. In the second raid, four containers carrying 105,760kg of aluminium flakes, worth about RM3.7 million, were found to be falsely declared as other goods. Mohd Asri said such imports require approval from the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) and are regulated by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). He added that the smuggling method involved misdeclaring the items as copper concentrate to bypass import permit requirements. Both cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967. — Bernama

Penang customs seize cigarettes, liquor worth RM2.67m

BUTTERWORTH, July 2 — The Penang Customs Department detained two men and crippled a smuggling syndicate, seizing various cigarettes as well as alcoholic beverages worth RM2.67 million in separate raids in the state recently. State Customs director Rohaizad Ali said in the first case, its enforcement officers detained two suspects after inspecting a lorry parked at a Bukit Mertajam residential area car park on May 6. 'We detained two men, in their 20s and 30s, who were found not far from the parked lorry. They were the driver and assistant of the vehicle. Further checks of the lorry uncovered white and kretek cigarettes suspected to be untaxed. 'The seized cigarettes amounted to 1.32 million sticks, valued at RM431,504, with total unpaid duties estimated at RM1.34 million. Investigations found that all the cigarettes were smuggled in from a neighbouring country to be distributed in northern states,' he said at a press conference here today. He said investigations revealed that the syndicate's modus operandi involved abandoning lorries loaded with smuggled cigarettes in public parking areas to evade detection by authorities. Rohaizad added that investigations are ongoing to trace the cigarette smuggling syndicate, which is believed to have an international network. Meanwhile, in a second case, the Customs team raided a house in a Butterworth residential area on May 9, seizing various alcoholic beverages valued at RM236,737.20, with total unpaid duties amounting to RM663,027.03. 'During the raid, the house was locked and unoccupied. Our team broke down the door and discovered a variety of alcoholic beverages, including 15,288 cans of beer and 13,820 bottles of liquor stored in the residence,' he said. He added that the homeowner claimed to have rented the property to an individual, and customs officers are tracking down the suspect involved in the case. Both cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. — Bernama

PKR Sabah shocked by new bribery video claims

Mustapha (seated, fourth from left) during the press conference. KOTA KINABALU (June 29): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah expressed shock over fresh allegations involving more state assemblymen in bribery-related videos. PKR Sabah chairman Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud was responding to a report by Malaysiakini, which claimed to possess videos and other evidence implicating five assemblymen from local parties and a former member of parliament in receiving bribes totaling nearly RM4 million. 'We were taken aback as we thought the previously released videos would be the end of it, especially since the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has already recorded statements from two of the assemblymen and the whistleblower,' said Mustapha at a press conference at the PKR Sabah office on Sunday. He added that the party is currently assessing the political impact of the scandal. 'This incident could potentially shift the landscape of political maneuvering in Sabah. Keadilan is ready for any possibility,' he said. Mustapha also called on all PKR branches to stay alert to ongoing developments and possible repercussions. Meanwhile, commenting on the recent 'Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0' anti-corruption rally, Mustapha — who is also the Deputy Higher Education Minister — urged organisers and participants to protest responsibly. He was referring to an incident where protestors burned a placard of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the rally. 'Although the Prime Minister has urged that the students involved not be expelled, I believe we should still send a message to the younger generation not to go overboard,' he said. 'I support youth voicing out on important issues like corruption — I did the same in my younger days. But let us not burn caricatures or symbols, because such acts are not part of Sabah's culture.'
