TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EdgeCortix® Inc., a pioneering fabless semiconductor company specializing in energy-efficient edge Artificial Intelligence (AI), today announced it has been awarded an Other Transaction (OT) agreement by the United States Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). This marks the first time a Japanese company and its U.S.-based subsidiary have secured such an award, highlighting EdgeCortix's growing prominence in advanced AI solutions.
The OT, awarded in February 2025, empowers the DIU to rapidly evaluate and eventually deploy EdgeCortix's cutting-edge hardware and software solutions across diverse U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) edge applications. These include critical areas involving AI-powered vision and generative AI technologies.

Under this initiative, EdgeCortix will demonstrate how its solutions can significantly enhance mission capabilities for military personnel while optimizing platforms, systems, and components utilized across the DoD. The collaboration aligns with DIU's Resource Optimized Compute program, which seeks to advance modern AI and machine learning systems capable of efficiently collecting, processing, and distributing mission-critical information at strategically decisive speeds. This program aims to ensure a strategic information advantage for national and global security operations across air, space, sea, ground, and cyber platforms. Key applications targeted include advanced AI analytics, real-time decision support systems, autonomous operations, and enhanced situational awareness.

Proton passes its first SOC 2 Type II audit, verifying its business security credentials

Proton, which provides VPN and secure mail services, has passed its first SOC 2 Type II audit. Completed in July 2025, this comes in addition to annual third-party security audits of Proton VPN's processes. SOC 2 Type II is a widely recognized standard for business security. It confirms that robust systems are in place, and that security processes are consistently followed in practice across the organization. Proton is best known for Proton VPN and Proton Mail, but also provides calendar, storage, password management, and crypto wallet tools. All of these services are covered by Proton's SOC 2 Type II security auditing. The Service Organization Control (SOC) audit framework tests how providers handle sensitive information, covering both control systems and their implementation. Running the audit demonstrates a commitment to data security, and it's particularly important in areas such as finance, healthcare, and regulated industries where security compliance is critical. In sectors such as these, SOC 2 compliance is a baseline requirement. The result brings Proton VPN into line with competitors such as NordLayer, NordVPN's business solution, which has also passed a SOC 2 Type 2 audit and has ISO 27001 certification. Other leading providers like Surfshark and ExpressVPN have not yet run SOC 2 audits, though they do have independent security testing programs which support the claims of their no-logs policies. Proton's SOC 2 Type II auditing process was run by Schellman, an independent auditing firm with experience in the technology sector. In preparation, the firm sought to formalize and document its processes and controls across areas including access management, incident response, risk assessment, and system monitoring. Proton reports that this process didn't involve any larger overhaul of its services, however. Following this, Schellman inspected how Proton's security controls are implemented across its infrastructure, running technical reviews, assessing documentation, and interviewing staff. At the end of the process, Proton successfully achieved the standard required for SOC 2 Type II validation. In a statement, Proton's Head of Security, Patricia Egger, said, 'Proton was built on the idea that privacy is a human right – and trust still has to be earned... Proton's SOC 2 Type II attestation proves that our security isn't just technical – it's operational. We meet strict, independently audited standards for how we handle data, systems, and processes.' And that matches what we've found with Proton's products. Based on our testing, we rate Proton VPN as one of the best VPNs available, noting that it particularly stands out for its advanced security features. Proton has taken a number of steps to prove the security of its systems. All the firm's apps are open source, meaning that the developer community is free to inspect the codebase and report on any issues or vulnerabilities that could compromise its software. Supporting this, the company has a public bug bounty program that offers rewards of up to $10,000, and the organization also runs regular penetration testing on its services. In addition, Proton VPN runs an annual third-party audit of its no-logs policy. This is carried out by Securitum, a major security auditing company based in Poland. The third and most recent audit was published in July 2024. Reporting on this, Proton published detailed notes on the questions that Securitum asked and what it found, going beyond the executive summaries that other providers sometimes offer on their audits. Alongside this, Proton achieved ISO 27001 certification in May 2024. This is an international standard for information security management systems, with best practice standards for managing data security. The firm also has HIPAA support and GDPR and Swiss DPA compliance, meeting further regulatory requirements for business users. We extensively tested the product for our full Proton VPN review and didn't find any evidence of DNS leaks or issues with the product's kill switch feature. Looking ahead, Proton states that it is committed to increasing transparency, to developing its security infrastructure, and to helping businesses better assess its services. In addition, Proton reports that the results of the SOC 2 report are available for customers on request and that its team will be happy to discuss the findings of the audit. A once-promising Japanese chipmaker has collapsed under mounting debt, a slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) sales, and a surge in supply from Chinese rivals. The company filed for bankruptcy protection last week, less than three years after its widely heralded launch in late 2022. The firm was backed by Japanese government-linked financial institutions and focused on producing power semiconductors critical to power electronics markets, including electric vehicles (EVs), industrial equipment, and home appliances. But faced with mounting debt driven by deteriorating electric vehicle demand and a flood of low-cost components from fast-growing Chinese rivals, the startup's business model proved unsustainable. Related: Chipmakers like Nvidia, AMD get a gift from Washington Tokyo-based chipmaker JS Foundry, also known as JS Fab, launched in December 2022 with the backing of a fund run by the Development Bank of Japan and created by Mercuria Investment and Sangyo Sosei Advisory. JS Foundry filed for bankruptcy protection with the Tokyo District Court last week, leaving behind an estimated $110 million in outstanding debt. In a bid to minimize upfront costs, JS Foundry inherited its manufacturing facility, a 41-year-old fab in Niigata Prefecture, from U.S.-based On Semiconductor (ON) . The legacy infrastructure proved inadequate for the demanding process requirements of silicon carbide (SiC) device fabrication - a notoriously capital-intensive industry - possibly compounding JS Foundry's financial woes. Yet in 2024, revenue plummeted to 2.6 billion yen (around $17.6 million). This sharp decline followed the end of a production arrangement with On Semiconductor (stemming from On's divestment of its Japan facility in late 2022). To make matters worse, the global downturn in EV sales hit the company especially hard. Rising interest rates, subsidy rollbacks, and underdeveloped charging infrastructure dampened enthusiasm for EVs, forcing automakers to slash chip orders. Compounding JS Foundry's financial woes, heavily subsidized Chinese chipmakers flooded the global market with affordable power semiconductor alternatives, making it clear that the startup lacked the necessary scale and vertical integration to compete. Finally, JS Foundry attempted talks with overseas investors to form a capital tie-up that would have helped it enter the silicon carbide power semiconductor segment, a next-generation technology known for its superior power efficiency. JS Foundry's collapse comes amid broader turmoil in the power semiconductor space. Rohm, another Japanese chip giant, recently reported its first net loss in over a decade, blaming underperforming power semiconductor investments. Last month, U.S.-based Wolfspeed (WOLF) , previously known as Cree, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The move triggered major write-downs for Japanese chipmaker Renasas Electronics, which had extended financing to Wolfspeed. Renansas subsequently abandoned plans to start SiC production later this year. In the end, JS Foundry's demise serves as a cautionary illustration of the risks of investing in a capital-intensive market where geopolitics, macroeconomic volatility, and technological disruption can rapidly upend even the most promising, initially well-capitalized businesses.
