Sunny spring boosts grocers as Brits buy 2,400 packs of strawberries every minute

Yahoo6 days ago

The UK's unusual burst of sun boosted purchases of fruit and ice lollies this spring, although food inflation continued to soar at the UK's grocers.
Higher prices for fresh meats, chocolate and butters drove food inflation to 4.7 per cent, its highest level since March 2024, according to data insights group Kantar.
But Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, said that 'higher prices didn't stop shoppers [this spring]… as the sun tempted more people out, fresh fruit sales were one of the biggest winners.'
Brits made 490m trips to the shop in the four weeks to July 15, the highest recorded level since pandemic buying cleared out shops in March 2020.
Consumers bought 2,400 packs of strawberries every minute during the month, while sales of mangoes and blueberries rose 27 per cent and 10 per cent each.
However, a rise in the frequency of trips to the grocers was balanced out by a lower trip spend, which dropped to £23.89.
'Consumer concerns over price are continuing, and this is reflected in the figures. Sales of own label ranges grew ahead of branded lines, as shoppers looked to balance their budgets.
'Deals also remain an important tool for retailers to offer value and the proportion of spending on promotion stepped up to 28.8 per cent,' McKevitt said.
Sales at the UK's biggest supermarket, Tesco, grew five per cent year on year. Its share of the market now stands at 28.1 per cent, up from 27.6 per cent this time last year.
Meanwhile, Asda sales continued to falter as the struggling grocer attempts to turn itself around after a tough year of customer dissatisfaction.
Sales fell 1.7 per cent year on year, with its share of the overall market down from 12.7 per cent to 11.9 per cent.
Aldi is hot on its heels, with the discounter just one per cent below Asda in terms of market share.
Aside from Asda, the Co-op was the only other supermarket to shrink over the year, by 0.7 per cent.
Waitress, Iceland and Ocado, which each hold less than five per cent of the market, continued to grow year on year.

India a Conducive Destination for UK MNCs Eyeing to Set up GCCs: Inductus

India offers a highly cost-effective environment compared to the UK, with lower operational and labor costs. Skilled labor in India is generally 60-70 per cent cheaper than in the UK You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. The Indian market is a conducive destination for UK enterprises eyeing to set up global capability centres (GCCs) as it offers an innovative, cost-effective digital infrastructure and a workforce with minimal operating expenses, according to a report by Inductus GCC. UK-based companies like HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Barclays already have their GCCs in India. "Businesses can establish their GCC in India with the best amenities by using models like COPO (company-owned partner operated). Also, businesses can monitor their operations in real time with the use of digital twin processes," Inductus said. The COPO model enables an enterprise to establish a GCC with absolute control over intellectual assets (IP), agility, and scalability while the partner manages day-to-day operations, ensuring zero liability, compliance, and maximum efficiency. India offers a highly cost-effective environment compared to the UK, with lower operational and labor costs. Skilled labor in India is generally 60-70 per cent cheaper than in the UK. This percentage reflects the significant cost advantage that companies can leverage when setting up GCCs in India. The second advantage, Inductus highlights, is access to a skilled workforce. AI is transforming careers in India, with 94 per cent of professionals believing AI skills will boost career growth, according to a 2025 study by Emeritus. "Indian workers lead global AI adoption, with 96 per cent using AI tools at work. India has a vast pool of skilled professionals, especially in technology, finance, engineering, and operations. This enables UK companies to tap into top talent for critical functions like software development, data analysis, and customer service," the Inductus report stated. India is rapidly becoming a hub for digital transformation. UK companies benefit from cutting-edge innovations in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, and automation, enhancing their global competitiveness. Moreover, India offers scalability with a large, flexible labor force that allows companies to scale operations quickly without the need for significant upfront investments, making it easier to adapt to market changes or business demands. Further, tax incentives, SEZ benefits, multiple GCC policies of individual state governments, and pro-business reforms make it a highly attractive investment destination. UK enterprises are battling several adversaries which in turn is an opportunity for India to help set up GCCs. Economic uncertainty is the most frequent issue reported by UK enterprises with 29 per cent saying that it is currently influencing their turnover. While it is still a smaller percentage than in 2022, more firms are citing this as a challenge now than they did a few months ago. The cost of labour, the cost of materials (18 per cent), competition (18 per cent), and a lack of domestic demand (17 per cent) are other frequent issues that each affect somewhat less than 5 per cent of enterprises. "As the UK contends with macroeconomic challenges, including inflationary pressures, stagnation, and rising labor costs, India offers a highly attractive alternative, providing UK enterprises with access to cost-efficient operational models, a technically proficient workforce, and advanced digital infrastructure. The ongoing discussions around a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) further enhance the economic synergy between the two countries, paving the way for optimized trade flows and investment," the report stated.

Gold prices edge higher as dollar weakens

Gold prices inched higher on Monday morning, and continue to trade near all-time highs, with weakness in the dollar offering support to the precious metal. Gold futures (GC=F) were up 0.2% at $3,293.30 an ounce at the time of writing, while the spot gold price climbed 1.4% to $3,286.03 per ounce. Meanwhile, the US dollar ( index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.2% to 97.17. Gold tends to have an inverse relationship to the dollar, as it is typically traded in the US currency, so weakness in the greenback makes the precious metal cheaper for overseas buyers. Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: "Exuberance is set to continue at the start of the week, as more trade deal scores are on the doors and geopolitical tensions have eased off. "Talks between Canada and the US are back on the cards, after an agreement to scrap a tax targeting American tech firms," she said. "There will now be speculation that other countries, like the UK, will be forced to drop their own taxes targeting the biggest tech firms in the world when further talks take place." Streeter added: "The trade deal announced again between the US and China, has poured more optimism into glass half full attitudes. Even though it's still pretty scant on detail, the agreement looks set to give US companies better access to crucial rare earth minerals, exported from China." The pound dipped 0.1% lower against the dollar (GBPUSD=X) on Monday, to trade at $1.3694, as investors weighed the latest UK economic data releases. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirmed a preliminary estimate that the UK economy expanded by 0.7% in the first three months of the year However, the household savings ratio, a measure of how much people save, fell for the first time in two years, to 10.9% from 12%, as people spent more on fuel, rent and restaurant meals. Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell (AJB.L), said: "Confirmation that the UK economy delivered the fastest growth of any G7 country at the start of the year feels almost redundant. Read more: Trending tickers: Palantir, Boeing, UBS, WH Smith and Hikma Pharmaceuticals 'A mix of tariff woes and tax hikes have created a period of such uncertainty and instability that many businesses have simply pressed pause on their future plans, and in some cases taken the decision to cut labour costs in order to set them up for what might be down the tracks." "The early growth spurt looks set to be an anomaly rather than the sustained expansion the government needs if it's to pad treasury coffers without resorting to tax rises or further spending cuts," she added. In other currency moves, the pound was slightly lower against the euro (GBPEUR=X), trading at €1.1683 at the time of writing. Oil prices dipped on Monday morning, amid easing geopolitical risks, following sharp movements in the commodity last week. Brent crude (BZ=F) futures edged 0.1% lower to $66.74 per barrel, at the time of writing, while West Texas Intermediate futures (CL=F) fell 0.3% to $65.35 a barrel. Stocks: Create your watchlist and portfolio "With the Iran-Israel-US truce holding, geopolitical tensions have calmed and that's kept downwards pressure on oil prices," said Hargreaves Lansdown's Streeter. "Brent Crude has fallen 14% over the past week as the easing of supply disruption worries collided with expectations that OPEC+ nations would ramp up production. There is still expected to be fall out for global growth, due to the impact of US trade policies, so the expectation of lower demand for energy is also weighing on prices." More broadly, the FTSE 100 (^FTSE) fell 0.3% on Friday morning to 8,773 points. For more details, on broader market movements check our live coverage here.
