'Picture very clear' for Sheff Wed boss Rohl

BBC News03-05-2025
Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl says his "picture is very clear" amid speculation he is to leave his role following the conclusion of the league season. After the Owls' 1-1 draw against Watford, the 36-year-old confirmed he had a clear plan over his own future ahead of the post-season recess."I know what I want to do, my picture is very clear," Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield. "But it's also part of the decision-making of the club."Rohl has had to juggle several off-field issues during his time at Hillsborough, including a small transfer budget and a reported strained relationship with owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri - who has been subject to several fan protests during the season. And despite being under contract at Wednesday until 2027, Rohl did little to appease talk surrounding his departure this summer."I will not forget this place. It doesn't matter what happens now," he added."To have such a relationship so quickly, such a belief, such hope, such a respectful togetherness - I can't have expected this when I took over."It will be part of the bottom of my heart."
Rohl took over Wednesday in October 2023 with the club in freefall, seven points from Championship safety following the club's worst ever start to a league season. The German immediately took to the hearts of Owls fans and helped save the club from relegation to League One on the final day of last season with a victory at Sunderland. This season, Rohl has helped consolidate Wednesday's second-tier status and after securing a top-half position in the final Championship standings, he was applauded by the travelling support at Vicarage Road for several minutes at the end of the match on Saturday."I had a view of my last 560 days at this club to look in their faces," Rohl reflected."How they celebrate, how they call my name – its always special. Big, big respect to them."The heartbeat of this club are the fans, they are always there. I have never had a negative experience with these fans, always positive."In a closing note, Rohl thanked the club for the support he has been given in his first managerial job of his young career."I thank you for all your support - for the fans, the journalists, for the staff. Thank you so much."

Claressa Shields eases past Lani Daniels to defend undisputed heavyweight title

Claressa Shields retained her undisputed women's heavyweight championship with a commanding unanimous decision over Lani Daniels on Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The judges scored the bout 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91 in favor of Shields, who improved to 17-0 (3 KOs). It marked the third straight main event appearance in Detroit for the 30-year-old Flint native and two-time Olympic gold medalist, who remains the only boxer in the four-belt era to become an undisputed champion in three different weight classes. Daniels (11-3-2, 1 KO), a 37-year-old former IBF light heavyweight titleholder from New Zealand, offered little early offense and spent the opening rounds circling the ring. Shields was forced to press the action and gradually took control with superior timing, footwork and punch variety. By the middle rounds, Shields had closed the distance and was landing consistent body shots and combinations to the head. Daniels began to stand her ground in the sixth and seventh rounds but struggled to match Shields' output or accuracy. The final rounds featured more two-way action, but Shields remained in control through cleaner shot selection and sharper counters. She outlanded Daniels in every round and neutralized her opponent's late pressure with disciplined defense and calculated exchanges. The fight capped an 11-bout card broadcast on Dazn and drew an announced crowd of 15,366. Shields' previous two appearances at Little Caesars Arena also headlined boxing's return to a venue that hadn't hosted a major card until her 2023 win over Maricela Cornejo. In the co-main event, Detroit's Tony Harrison (30-4-1, 21 KOs) returned after a 28-month layoff and scored a unanimous-decision win over Edward Diaz (15-7, 12 KOs) despite being dropped in the ninth round. Harrison, a former super-welterweight champion, was fighting for the first time since losing to Tim Tszyu in 2023.

League One Alloa handed Premier Sports Cup second-round trip to Rangers

League One side Alloa have been handed a Premier Sports Cup second-round trip to Rangers following Sunday's draw. The Wasps – the lowest-ranked team remaining in the tournament – were surprise winners of their group and will face Russell Martin's Gers at Ibrox on the weekend of August 16/17. Holders Celtic will host newly-promoted Falkirk in one of four all-Premiership ties. The others see Kilmarnock host Dundee United, Livingston at home to Hibernian, and St Mirren play Hearts in Paisley. St Johnstone, relegated from the top flight last term, will host Motherwell while Aberdeen have been drawn away to Championship side Morton. There is guaranteed to be at least one second-tier side in the last eight after Championship pair Partick Thistle and Ayr United were pitted together. St Mirren and Ayr became the last two sides to secure their second-round places on Sunday when Killian Phillips' first-half double set the Paisley men on course for a 2-1 home victory over the Honest Men in Group D. While the Buddies topped the section, Scott Brown's side also progressed as one of the three best runners-up despite losing their perfect record in the competition against their William Hill Premiership hosts. Dunfermline had been waiting in the wings hoping to profit from any Saints slip-up or an unlikely nine-goal defeat for Ayr, but their hopes of progressing were dashed by events in Paisley. The Buddies went ahead after Phillips fired home Roland Idowu's cutback from 15 yards out in the 16th minute, and the recently-capped Republic of Ireland midfielder doubled his tally in the 38th minute when he turned home another Idowu delivery from just outside the six-yard box. Ayr pulled one back in the 64th minute when Kevin Holt headed home Dom Thomas' corner to ensure a nervy finale for the hosts. Dundee – eliminated after losing their opening two fixtures – were the only top-flight side to fail to make it through the group stage. Killian Phillips at double as St Mirren advance in cup with win over Ayr

Killian Phillips' first-half double set St Mirren on course for a 2-1 home victory over William Hill Championship side Ayr United as they booked their place in the second round of the Premier Sports Cup as Group D winners. Scott Brown's Honest Men also progressed as one of the three best runners-up despite losing their perfect record in the competition against their William Hill Premiership hosts. Dunfermline were waiting in the wings hoping to profit from any Saints slip-up or an unlikely nine-goal defeat for Ayr, but Neil Lennon's side are now out of the competition. St Mirren and Ayr join top-flight contingent Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibernian, Dundee United, Hearts, Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Livingston and Falkirk plus Championship trio Partick Thistle, St Johnstone and Morton and League One outfit Alloa in the last 16. Dundee – eliminated after losing their opening two fixtures – were the only top-flight side to fail to make it through the group stage. St Mirren, who gave a debut to on-loan Wycombe keeper Shamal George, knew they needed some kind of positive result to ensure they did not follow the Dee in crashing out at the first hurdle. A win would secure top spot in the group while a penalty shootout victory following a draw would have been enough to take Stephen Robinson's side through as one of the best runners-up. Any tension in the Buddies camp was eased in the 16th minute when they went ahead after Phillips fired home Roland Idowu's cutback from 15 yards out. The recently-capped Republic of Ireland midfielder doubled his tally in the 38th minute when he turned home another Idowu delivery from just outside the six-yard box. Ayr pulled one back in the 64th minute when Kevin Holt headed home Dom Thomas' corner to ensure a nervy finale for the hosts, but in the end both sides made it into the last 16.
