Ahmedabad Crash: Pilots' Bodies Decry 'Tone' of Preliminary Report, Insinuation of Pilot Error

New Delhi: The Indian Commercial Pilots Association is among pilots' bodies which have condemned insinuation of pilot error in the aftermath of the release of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's preliminary investigation report into the June 12 crash of Air India flight AI 171.
The preliminary report put the toll at 260 lives, including 241 of the 242 people on board, including the two pilots.
A key point in the report that many have latched on to is that the two engine fuel cutoff switches transitioned from 'RUN' to 'CUTOFF' position one after another with a time gap of less than a second. In the cockpit voice recording, the findings revealed, one of the pilots can be heard asking the other why he cut off the fuel, to which the other pilot responded that he did not. There is no detail on the pilots' conversation before and after these lines.
As noted by Reuters, it did not identify which remarks were made by the flight's captain and which by the first officer, nor which pilot transmitted "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" just before the crash.
The Indian Commercial Pilots Association has around 1,000 pilots employed in scheduled airlines in India. It called the suggestions that pilot suicide was the reason behind the crash 'reckless and unfounded', reports Indian Express, in addition to being 'irresponsible' and 'deeply insensitive'.
The association called upon media organisations and commentators to act with "restraint, empathy, and respect for due process."
It noted that the crew of the plane deserved support, not "vilification based on conjecture."
'To casually suggest pilot suicide in the absence of verified evidence is a gross violation of ethical reporting and a disservice to the dignity of the profession," it said.
The plane was commanded by 56-year-0ld Sumeet Sabharwal whose flying experience comprised 15,638 hours, and 32-year-old Clive Kunder who had 3,403 hours of experience.
The Airline Pilots' Association of India, has also criticised the report for its 'tone and direction' that suggested 'bias towards pilot error'.
"ALPA-I categorically rejects this presumption and insists on a fair, fact-based inquiry,' ALPA-I president Sam Thomas said, according to the Express report. The pilots' body also reiterated its request to be included 'at the very least, as observers' in the air crash investigation.

For third day in a row, Delhi schools get hoax bomb threat emails
For the third consecutive day on Wednesday, seven schools in Delhi received bomb threat emails in the morning, prompting authorities to conduct search operations on the premises. All the threats turned out to be a hoax. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said the St Thomas School in Dwarka called them to notify about the threat at 5.26 am, followed by Vasant Valley in Vasant Kunj at 6.30 am, Richmond Global School in Paschim Vihar at 8.11 am, and Mother International in Hauz Khas at 8.12 am. One fire tender was sent to each school. Similar threats were also received by two branches of Prudence School located in Ashok Vihar and Pirtampura, as well as Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in Lodhi Estate, which promptly shut down the school for a day. The day also saw the police briefly apprehending a 12-year-old boy for allegedly sending fake bomb threats to St Stephen's College and St Thomas School on Tuesday. The police said the boy, a student of a private school, was apprehended in South Delhi, from where he had sent the emails. He was picked up and later released after counseling. 'When he sent the email, his parents were out of the city… During counseling, the boy revealed that he wanted the schools to be shut down and randomly tagged the email IDs of the college and the school,' a source in the police said. Similar threat emails were received on Monday by three Delhi schools – the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) School in Rohini's Sector 14, the Navy School in Chanakyapuri, and another CRPF School in Dwarka's Sector 16. Sources said the contents of the emails are the same, and the sender is also suspected to be one person. The email read, 'Good Morning… Explosive devices are hidden inside backpacks and placed around the classrooms of the school. This is extremely serious. You will all pay for your sins. Roadkill and Benji are the persons responsible for this bloodbath. Release our names to the press/media.' According to an officer, Wednesday's email was suspected to have been sent through VPN (Virtual Private Network), and the sender used the Tuta Mail service provider based in Germany. The police said they would write to Tuta Mail seeking details of the user. An officer said that legal action is being pursued, and the cyber units of the respective district police are conducting an inquiry into the bomb threats in their areas. Since last May, several schools in the Capital have been receiving similar hoax threats. More than 200 schools received bomb threats on their official email IDs in May 2024. Soon after, similar emails were sent to several hospitals, colleges, and the Delhi Airport. In May this year, Udyog Bhawan at the Central Secretariat had received a bomb threat via email, triggering extensive checking that ultimately resulted in the building being declared safe. In June, a Delhi-bound Air India flight from Mumbai had received a bomb threat after an airline crew member discovered a paper that said, 'Bomb in flight Air India 2948, Air India 171' written on it. However, checks by the DFS and the Central Industrial Security Force revealed the threat to be a hoax. Appear personally in contempt case, HC tells HCA secretary, CEO
Telangana High Court directed Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) secretary R. Devraj and Chief Executive Officer Suneel Bose Kante to personally appear before it at 10.30 a.m. on Friday in a contempt of court case. Justice Nagesh Bheemapaka of the HC, admitting the contempt of court case filed by M/s Ganjam Decor Services stating that HCA had wilfully disobeyed orders passed by the HC over payment of ₹18.88 lakh, issued Form-I notices to both the office bearers of the HCA. The judge said their personal appearance can be dispensed with if the order passed by the HC to release the amount to the petitioner was complied with. The petitioner filed the contempt of court case stating that on October 18, 2024, the HC had ordered the HCA to release ₹18.88 lakh to it for the works executed. Pointing out that the order was not complied with by the HCA till date, the petitioner moved court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against it.

Income tax department uncovers donation scam involving unrecognised political party in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: In ongoing searches carried out by the income tax department at more than 200 locations across the country for false deductions by political parties, the I-T teams in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar unearthed a massive scam involving crores of rupees routed through an unrecognised political party under the guise of donations eligible for tax deductions under section 80GGC of the Income Tax Act, 1961. As part of the action, the IT teams conducted searches at five different locations in the city, including those belonging to a chartered accountant. "The party at the centre of this scam is Yuva Bharat Atmanirbhal Dal, formerly operating under the name Save Merit Save Nation, and registered in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The discreet investigation carried out for the past several months revealed the party received hundreds of crores in donations directly into its bank accounts via RTGS, NEFT, and IMPS from a large number of individuals, primarily salaried taxpayers, who then claimed tax deductions under section 80GGC," said sources. Investigations revealed a large portion of these so-called donations were never retained by the party. Instead, the funds were systematically rotated back to the donors or their close associates. In many instances, the money was rerouted to the donor's family members, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), or intermediary shell entities. Adding to the gravity of the case, the party in question failed to file mandatory reports with the Election Commission and began receiving donations even before being officially registered under section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 — a legal requirement for any political entity to lawfully accept donations. The I-T department has issued advisory communications to all identified donors of Yuva Bharat Atmanirbhal Dal, urging them to file updated returns under section 139(8A) of the Income Tax Act. Failure to comply may attract strict penal consequences.
