Nicole Kidman's kooky thriller Holland is a half-baked mess

Independent27-03-2025
In the psychological thriller Holland, Mimi Cave's follow-up to her 'the modern dating scene is cannibalism' horror film Fresh, a father (Matthew Macfadyen's Fred) tests his son on what's to be done when you don't feel like making the bed. It's simple, really – throw a duvet over the mess, smooth it out, and delude yourself into thinking that's a job well done.
Unfortunately for Holland, this is one of those instances in which a film has provided the bullet for its own execution. There is, in fact, no better way to describe what's happened here. Andrew Sodorski's script, which has bounced around Hollywood for a decade, has come out a half-baked mess. Cave's role is to toss a layer of visual irony over it all and hope no one notices. Holland, with its floral wallpapers and porcelain figurines, and scenes that consistently end with a flare of violins, gestures aggressively towards kitsch. But Sodorski's story is plain, dry melodrama. There's not a lick of the camp, the satirical, or the demented in sight.
Nicole Kidman, operating in a mode of dewy-eyed, soon-to-be ruffled glamour, stars as frustrated midwestern housewife Nancy Vandergroot. In her opening monologue, she talks about her perfect life in Holland, Michigan, a Dutch-flavoured suburban postcard of windmills, model train sets, and litter-free streets, only to ponder, 'sometimes I still wonder, is it even real?' Presumably not. She starts to suspect Fred, her optometrist husband always away at conferences, has been unfaithful. It's plausible. Macfadyen plays him like he's made out of moulded plastic.
But Cave has directed everyone here to indulge in the uncanny. And so, Nancy cackles and slaps the table while watching a rented VHS copy of Mrs Doubtfire. This is a period piece – Rachel Sennott's cameo as a flannel-swaddled, hair-clipped babysitter immediately sets us in the early 2000s – yet it's hard to believe anyone, at any point, was ever so taken aback by the realisation Mrs. Doubtfire was Robin Williams in drag.
There are surrealist dream sequences, too, of mannequins and model houses. At one point, Nancy robotically spreads ketchup over an uncooked meatloaf, only to snap and suddenly pummel the squelching lump of meat all over the table. She looks down at her hands. They're covered in the red sauce. Oh, Cave eagerly prods at your shoulder, doesn't that look a bit like blood? Nancy is abetted in her suspicions by a fellow teacher, Dave Delgado (Gael García Bernal), a loved-up narrative prop who fights off racist attackers purely, it seems, so Nancy can afterwards coo, 'you were so manly!'
Nancy and Dave are clearly crazy about each other. Could her assertions about her husband's supposed infidelity really be a projection of her own adulterous desires? The film underlines an already underlined point by intercutting a scene of unsatisfying marital sex with the cacophonous racket of Dutch clogs. Holland is one of those films that winds you in, that delivers suggestion after suggestion, tease after tease, only for its eventual reveal to satisfy none of its own questions. The duvet's been pulled back. And, it turns out, there's nothing there but a bare mattress.
Dir: Mimi Cave. Starring: Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen, Jude Hill, Gael García Bernal. 18, 108 minutes.

Tom Holland spotted on Spider-Man set in Glasgow

On Sunday, 29-year-old Hollywood star Holland was spotted rehearsing scenes and waving to fans while clad in the superhero's famous suit. Spider-Man 4, officially titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is helmed by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton. It is slated for a July 2026 release. Road closures and diversions throughout Glasgow can be expected until at least August 15. Plot details remain under wraps, but long-time Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal, while appearing on Deadline's Behind the Lens podcast in December last year, teased what we can expect from the story. She said: 'We have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker [in No Way Home], and that he was going to focus on being Spider-Man because being Peter Parker was too hard.' The most recent Spider-Man film, 2021's No Way Home, was a huge box office success, grossing $1.9bn worldwide - making it the sixth highest-grossing movie in history.

Who is Rebecca Loos? Inside David Beckham affair rumours with Celeb SAS star

Tonight, Rudy Reyes will whip a new group of celebrities into shape as Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins returns to our screens. Lucy Spraggan, Louie Spence, Adebayo 'The Beast' Akinfenwa, and many more are all set to take on the challenge. Yet there's one contestant who's sure to draw the audience's eye more than the others. We're talking about Rebecca Loos. The 48-year-old is, of course, well known for being a former glamour model and a reality TV star. Yet she first came to attention back in 2004 when she alleged that she'd had a four-month affair with David Beckham while she was working as his personal assistant. David and Victoria denied the allegationscalling them ludicrous, but that didn't stop the story from propelling Rebecca to international fame. So with that in mind, here's everything you might need to know about the model turned yoga teacher. Former TV star Rebecca Loos rose to fame after claims she had an affair with David. The now mum-of-two is a former glamour model who was born in Spain but gained Dutch citizenship through her father, a Dutch diplomat. Rebecca has previously appeared on the likes of The Farm, Extreme Celebrity Detox, Temptation Island and The X Factor: Battle of the Stars, as well as appearing on the cover of Playboy. She now lives a very different life, having met her husband, Sven Christjar Skaiaa, while filming 71 Degrees North, as he was a medic on the show. The pair married in 2012 and went on to have two sons, and now live in Norway, where she works as a yoga teacher. In 2004, Rebecca claimed she had an affair with David after working as his personal assistant. She told Sky that he was an 'amazing lover' and that they 'couldn't keep their hands off each other'. She said, according to reports: 'We were just locked into each other all night, conversation-wise, other people noticed… we just connected. 'I think the chemistry between David and me was so strong… people were aware and they weren't very happy.' 'He knows how to please. He's not afraid of a woman's body. He seems to know what he's doing,' Rebecca added to Kay Burley. In 2021, Rebecca recalled telling her story to Closer magazine, saying: 'I just felt the need to be truthful. 'Whether you've done something that's right or wrong, it was kind of just eating me up. I was living a lie and keeping secrets. 'Max Clifford [former celebrity agent] said to me he'd negotiate an exclusive with the newspaper and that if I was willing to tell absolutely all the juicy details, then I would get up to five or six hundred thousand pounds. Ridiculous money.' 'People said I was mad. Who was this guy? I hardly knew him, what on earth was I doing? But look at everything I have now, I am so happy. I have no regrets, I am so happy with my life now,' she later told The Daily Mail. 'But many people are so afraid of change. Change is good, change is how you learn, people should just f**king go for it.' She continued: 'I like the way my life has taken me. If I hadn't been famous, I would not have been invited on the TV show where I met my husband, Sven and had my lovely boys. I would not have had the life I have now.' Talking about the affair scandal, Rebecca added: 'I took a lot of wrong decisions, and got talked into a lot of things. Of course, if I could go back in time, I might change some things, but wouldn't everyone? I have no regrets.' David has always denied the scandalous rumours, calling them 'ludicrous'. In a statement when the allegations first arose, the then 28-year-old said: 'During the past few months, I have become accustomed to reading more and more ludicrous stories about my private life. 'The simple truth is that I am very happily married. I have a wonderful wife and two very special kids. There is nothing any third party can do to change these facts.' Victoria didn't address the claims at the time, but in a 2007 interview, she said: 'I'm not going to lie. It was a really tough time. 'No one said marriage was going to be easy. Yes, there have been bumps along the road. 'But the fact is we've come out of everything we've been through stronger and happier.' In later years, David was accused of having affairs with model Sarah Marbeck and beautician Danielle Heath, all of which were denied by statements released on behalf of the Beckhams. After hitting the headlines, it emerged that Rebecca was actually related to broadcaster Piers Morgan – they're second cousins. More Trending 'I've met him a few times over the years, mostly at showbiz parties, where he'd be like, 'Hi, cuz,' but I've not seen him for years,' she told OK! When writing about his most shocking personal revelation, former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers told The Independent: 'Two days into the David Beckham/Rebecca Loos scandal, I discovered she was my second cousin. And I had even apparently danced with her at a family wedding in Madrid.' Hilariously, despite their relation, she refused to sell him the story. The eagerly awaited sequel, officially titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will see Tom Holland reprise his iconic role. It is believed that Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink has been cast to star alongside Holland. And over the last few days, Bothwell Street in the city centre has been transformed into downtown New York. Crews working on the big-budget Marvel movie spent the sunny Saturday prepping an intense stunt involving a TANK after filming officially started on Friday. And today, Holland was spotted in his iconic Spider-Man suit walking along the streets as crews prepared to film more scenes. He was seen chatting to director Destin Daniel Cretton and other members of the production team as they walked across the set. They then began filming a chaotic car stunt, which saw Spider-Man standing on top of a tank as it flew down Bothwell Street. Three New York-style police cars followed in hot pursuit as they sped down the road with their lights flashing behind him. Extras on foot were seen running and surrying up the pavement in a panic guided by actors dressed in police costumes. Spider-Man 4 starts shooting in Glasgow as Hollywood film swings into city A huge scaffolding structure safety rig was set up around the tank for Spider-Man to be harnessed in as he stood on the roof. He was attached to cables, which kept him steady as the vehicle sped down the street. It comes after crews filmed a huge chase scene yesterday which saw cars thrown into the air. A huge crowd lined the bottom of the street as a black film car raced ahead of the tank as it rumbled down the road. A taxi and a van attached to hydraulic ramps were thrown into the air as the war machine sped past, with punters gasping in excitement as the vehicles were left suspended in the air. A high-tech drone with a camera attached was zooming overhead to get aerial shots of the stunt. The tank then came to a screeching halt at the bottom of the street. There were some cheers and applause after the stunt ended, bringing some excitement to both movie fans and people going about their day. In later scenes, a stunt double for Tom Holland was spotted on top of the tank as it sped along the street. TOP FILMING LOCATION THE flick has brought movie-fever to Glasgow once again, with some punters dressed as Spider-Man putting in an appearance. Holland, 29, returns as the titular character, with real-life girlfriend Zendaya, 28, as Michelle Jones "MJ" Watson, Jon Berntha, 48, portraying The Punisher, and Charlie Cox, 42, as Daredevil. Filming is set to move further along into Merchant City after Wednesday, August 13, with scenes are also expected to be shot on Glassford Street and Virginia Street. It is just the latest lot of filming taking place in Glasgow. Earlier this year, Hollywood hunk Glen Powell filmed scenes for sci-fi flick Ghost Writer on Bothwell Street. It is his second time in the city in a year, as he filmed on the exact same street for the remake of 80's hit Running Man in November. World War Z, which starred Brad Pitt, 61, previously used George Square to represent Philadelphia, while the city was also transformed into Gotham City for Batgirl and The Batman. And the Merchant City got turned into 1960's New York for a parade chase scene in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Glasgow is starting to resemble the Big Apple for Tom Holland's latest MCU appearance. Historic street signs have been covered with decor from Manhattan. Hot dog carts and newsstands are scattered among the streets. American adverts for flats to rent and insurance firms are even plastered over buildings on the street. Movie vehicles are also being stored on West Campbell Street. The road is lined with an ambulance and New York Fire Department pick-up truck. There are also scores of iconic New York yellow taxis and NYPD police cars. 7 Filming is currently taking place on Bothwell Street Credit: PA Media 7 Yesterday, locals watched as crews filmed a huge chase scene Credit: Splash 7 Tom Holland's stunt double was seen filming scenes yesterday Credit: Splash
