Paul Azinger is selected to receive the PGA Tour's Payne Stewart Award
The award began in 2000, a year after Stewart and three others died in a plane crash. It has become one of the top awards in golf, with a ceremony televised live from Atlanta during the Tour Championship in August.
'To be named the recipient of this award, representing my dearest friend, is one of the proudest moments in my life,' Azinger said.
Azinger is a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour, including the 1993 PGA Championship that he won in a playoff. He is equally known for reshaping the Ryder Cup qualification system and leading the Americans to a rare victory against Europe in 2008. He now works as a television analyst for the PGA Tour Champions.
The award honors a player who shows character, sportsmanship and commitment to charity. Azinger and his wife, Toni, in 2021 opened the Azinger Family Compassion Center, which serves vulnerable and struggling families in Manatee County in Florida.
The Southern Company, which sponsors the award, donates $300,000 toward the recipient's charity and $200,000 to Stewart Family Foundation programs.
Stewart, a three-time major champion and the reigning U.S. Open champion when he died in 1999, and Azinger were close friends on tour. Azinger was the main speaker at Stewart's memorial service, rolling up his pants to look like plus fours and wearing a tam o'shanter cap.

'Payne displayed the ultimate character, sportsmanship and service to others throughout his career. He set the standard for how to represent the game of golf, so to be recognized for this award is truly humbling,' Azinger said.
The ceremony will be Aug. 19. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Byron Nelson received the inaugural award. Brandt Snedeker received it last year. Other winners over the years have included Tom Watson and Nick Price, Steve Stricker and Tom Lehman.
'If there is one person who knows all the positive traits that exemplified Payne Stewart, it's his close friend, Paul,' PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. 'His values align with the character and charitable pursuits that Payne displayed throughout his career, and it's only fitting that Paul be honored with this year's award.'

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Thorbjorn Olesen worked out of trouble more than once Friday at the TPC Twin Cities to take a one-stroke lead over Jake Knapp into the weekend in the 3M Open. Olesen followed an opening 9-under 62 on Thursday with a 66, hitting out of the rough to set up a 5-foot birdie putt on his final hole — the par-4 ninth. The 35-year-old Danish player also recovered from a double bogey on the par-4 15th with consecutive birdies as he searches for his first PGA Tour victory. 'I think both days, my iron play has been really, really good,' Olesen said. 'I hit a lot of shots really close to the pin and gave myself a lot of good chances. Today, there was like two or three bad drives that costed me, but I still felt pretty good over the ball.' He had a 14-under 128 total. Knapp shot 65. Pierceson Coody (65) was another stroke back with Sam Stevens (68). Stevens closed with a bogey on No. 9. Takumi Kanaya (64), Chris Kirk (67) and Matti Schmid (68) were 11 under. Knapp had the lowest score on the PGA Tour this year, a 59 at the Cognizant Classic in February. Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., nearly matched Knapp with a course-record 11-under 60 on Thursday, but dropped 29 spots Friday with a 75. Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont., joined Svensson at 7 under after a round of 69. Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., and Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont., were 5 under heading into the weekend. Rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart ends holdout, signs $18.97 million deal with Bengals
Shemar Stewart and the Cincinnati Bengals agreed to a contract on Friday, ending the rookie defensive end's three-day holdout from training camp. Stewart's agent, Zac Hiller of LAA, said the four-year deal is worth $18.97 million guaranteed, including a $10.4 million signing bonus. The Bengals and Stewart were deadlocked over contract language that could potentially void future guarantees if there are any off-field incidents or conduct detrimental to the team. Other teams have had that language, but this was the first time Cincinnati included that provision with a first-round pick. Stewart, the 17th overall pick in April's draft, eventually agreed to the provision, but got more of his signing bonus now instead of later in the season. Stewart had only 4 1/2 total sacks during three seasons at Texas A&M, but at 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds they are hoping to refine his pass rushing skills as well as step into the starting lineup for the Sept. 7 opener at Cleveland. When Stewart does step onto the practice field, it will be his first time suiting up as a Bengal. He did not participate in offseason workouts after not signing an injury waiver. 'He learned a lot in the classroom, but at the end of the day for us when it comes down to technique and just our core fundamentals, the only way to go out there and create great habits is to do it every day,' defensive coordinator Al Golden said on Monday.
