Perak vape ban decision pending further talks, says MB
While the state executive council meeting briefly raised the matter, the Perak Mentri Besar said a more in-depth review is still required.
'A study needs to be conducted before any firm decision can be made.
'I have spoken to the state health committee chairman A. Sivanesan about it, but there are several matters that must be carefully considered.
'Among the factors being weighed are public health concerns and the potential impact on local vape traders,' he said after launching two strategic plans for the state here yesterday.
On May 23, Saarani said that Perak is ready to consider the proposal to ban the sale of vape products and that he would try to bring the matter to the exco meeting the following week.
Saarani added in the press conference that he had also received a request from the operators' (vape) association to discuss the matter.
'These are issues that need to be thoroughly examined.
'So any move to regulate or ban vape sales must take into account both health implications and economic effects on traders.'
Saarani said with Sivanesan tasked with reviewing the matter from both a health and business impact perspective, a final decision will be made once all considerations are fully explored.
'I hope the matter will be tabled at the exco meeting as soon as possible,' he said.
Earlier on at the event, Saarani said the state marked a new milestone with the launch of two strategic plans aimed at transforming Perak into an inclusive, sustainable and competitive smart state driven by the digital economy.
The Perak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 and the Perak State Smart City Blueprint 2040, Saarani said, are designed to strengthen digital infrastructure, empower human capital, and stimulate innovation and technology investment.
He said the simultaneous launch of both plans marks a key step towards building a more efficient, resilient and high-quality urban environment, with a positive impact on Perak's socio-economic development.
'We are now in an era of rapid digital transformation, and if we act too slowly, we will be left behind. That is why the digital economy agenda has been identified as one of the nine main agendas under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan.
'Our goal is clear: to build an inclusive, resilient and sustainable economy.'

KUALA LUMPUR: Young people in Perak have been urged to seize the thousands of job opportunities emerging from the state's rapid industrial development or risk losing them to outsiders and foreign workers. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the state's heavy investment in industrial zones is part of its goal to position Perak as a national TVET corridor, a key agenda under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 plan to future-proof the economy and secure long-term prosperity. However, he said these roles require skilled workers, particularly those with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) certification. "I want the people of Perak to understand the government's intention. If our own children do not support this aspiration, we will have to offer these job opportunities to outsiders. And if that still is not enough, we cannot avoid hiring foreign workers," he told the New Straits Times during a visit to Balai Berita for the Malaysia Hari Ini programme. Saarani said the state has intensified awareness campaigns at the district level in collaboration with various agencies, targeting secondary school students, especially those in Form Four and Form Five, to highlight career prospects through TVET. He said the importance of removing the stigma that TVET is a second-class option, noting that the sector now offers competitive salaries and strong job market demand. "It is time we dispel the notion that TVET is a second-class certificate. With a TVET qualification, real jobs are waiting," he said. Citing internal data, Saarani said approximately 94 per cent of TVET graduates secure employment. As part of the outreach initiative, successful TVET alumni, including chefs, welders, and animation specialists, are being brought into schools to inspire students and show the real-life potential of vocational careers. He added that all TVET institutions in Perak must also ensure their academic programmes are aligned with the specific needs of local industries. "That is why we are engaging with industry players and training providers to ensure course offerings are relevant to the job market. We do not want these opportunities to slip away to outsiders simply because locals lack the necessary skills," he said. "Our goal is to create a prosperous Perak where the people thrive. That prosperity starts with employment — when people have jobs, they have income to spend, and that in turn drives the state's economy." Previously, the Perak government had outlined its ambition to position the state as a National TVET Corridor, with several mega projects, including the Automotive High-Tech Valley in Tanjung Malim, the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park, and the Silver Valley Technology Park, serving as anchor platforms to absorb skilled graduates. The state had also introduced the TVET 2025 Roadshow Programme aimed at correcting misconceptions about vocational education and promoting it as a primary pathway to careers in technology, manufacturing and entrepreneurship.

LENGGONG, July 13 — Lenggong Valley continues to record rapid growth as a heritage tourism destination, with tourist arrivals soaring by over 280 per cent in just two years. Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the number of tourists rose from 24,770 in 2022 to 114,182 last year, following continuous efforts to develop the area. 'Tour guides saw their income increase by 237 per cent, while accommodation operators recorded a 145 per cent increase in revenue over the same period. 'This development has had a direct impact on the local economy, especially for rural communities, including traditional villages and the Orang Asli, who are now actively involved in tourism-related activities such as handicrafts, traditional food and homestay programmes,' he said. He said this during a dinner event held in conjunction with the evaluation session of the Aspiring Lenggong Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) site here yesterday. Saarani said scientific studies conducted have identified several areas with development potential, involving 39 geosites, 11 geoarchaeological sites, eight biosites, and 21 cultural and heritage sites. 'Five of these sites have been recognised for their international geological value, encompassing unique and interrelated elements of geological heritage, biodiversity, culture and archaeology. 'This diversity of resources makes Lenggong Valley not only an important site for research activities but also a competitive international tourism destination,' he said. He also said the state government is actively strengthening Lenggong Valley's international standing through collaborations with various international geopark networks and participation in global conferences, including with Japan, South Korea and Turkey. 'Lenggong Valley is no longer just a tourism destination, it is now a centre for human capital development based on heritage,' he added. Lenggong Valley, designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2012, spans 22 square kilometres (sq km) which is about one per cent of the total area of the Aspiring Lenggong Unesco Global Geopark, which covers 2,248 sq km.
