As of press time, no deal was engineered by the Blue Jays, who are in the market to add, ideally, at least two arms to the bullpen, a potential starter and a right-handed bat.

A double dip awaits Tuesday followed by an afternoon game Wednesday in as hectic a stretch the Jays will experience.

It will all lead up to Thursday's 6 p.m. trade deadline.

Daulton Varsho has a few more games scheduled in triple-A as he makes his way back from a hamstring injury.

If a deal makes the Jays better and Varsho must be sacrificed, so be it.

Nathan Lukes and Myles Straw have almost made Varsho an afterthought.
Article content
Lukes hit leadoff in the series opener and went yard in the third inning for his eighth homer of the season and his third in the past five games.
Article content
He was denied a multi-homer game when Cedric Mullins soared over the wall in straight-away centre to rob Lukes and prevent the Jays from tying the game in the fourth inning.
Article content
Opportunities such as the one the Jays have been presented and created this season don't come around often and no one, save for Vlad Jr., should be exempt from any trade discussion, including Varsho.

Pitchers Lazaro Estrada, Easton Lucas and Paxton Schultz were in Baltimore as the club prepares for the doubleheader.

None was active for the series opener.

The frenetic slate at stifling hot Oriole Park at Camden Yards continues with Tuesday's 12:35 p.m. first pitch followed by first pitch at 6:35 p.m. to complete the day's double dip; a DH day for Vlad Jr. is a certainty for one of the two games; teams are allowed to add a player to the 26-man roster for doubleheaders.

Canada earns relay bronze at world swimming championship as McIntosh eyes third gold

Bronze medalist team Canada pose on the podium after the mixed 4x100-metre medley relay final at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, Wednesday, July 30, 2025. (AP Photo/Lee Jin-man) SINGAPORE -- Canada captured bronze in the mixed 4x100-metre medley relay Wednesday at the world swimming championship, its fifth medal of the meet. The team of Kylie Masse, of LaSalle, Ont., Oliver Dawson, of Grande Prairie, Alta., Toronto's Josh Liendo and Taylor Ruck, of Kelowna, B.C., finished in three minutes 40.90 seconds, just ahead of the Netherlands. Neutral Athletes B -- a team of Russian swimmers competing under a neutral flag -- won gold in a meet-record 3:37.97, with China taking silver in 3:39.99. Russia is competing under a neutral banner due to ongoing international sanctions following the country's invasion of Ukraine. Earlier in the day, Ilya Kharun of Montreal placed fourth in the men's 200 butterfly, finishing in 1:54.34 -- just 0.17 seconds off the podium after winning Olympic bronze last summer in Paris. American Luca Urlando claimed gold in a dominant performance with a time of 1:51.87, followed by Poland's Krzysztof Chmielewski (1:52.64) and Australia's Harrison Turner (1:54.17). The 20-year-old Kharun was chasing his first world championship podium after missing the 50 butterfly final earlier in the meet by just 0.01 seconds. Meanwhile, Toronto's Summer McIntosh advanced to the women's 200 butterfly final with the second-fastest semifinal time, clocking 2:06.22 behind Australia's Elizabeth Dekkers (2:06.13). Yu Zidi, the 12-year-old Chinese phenom, swam 2:07.95 to make the final eight. Her time was the eighth best. Yu finished fourth earlier in the championships in the 200 individual medley. The 18-year-old McIntosh will chase her third gold of the meet in Thursday's final, having already won the 400 freestyle and 200 IM. McIntosh is aiming for five individual titles at the eight-day meet -- a feat only U.S. great Michael Phelps has achieved at a single world championship. With a file from The Associated Press. Calgary Stampeders place starter Vernon Adams Jr. on one-game injured list

Calgary Stampeders quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. (3) throws against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers during second-half CFL action in Winnipeg Friday, July 18, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/John Woods CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders will be without starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. when they face the Ottawa Redblacks on Thursday. Calgary (5-2) placed Adams on the one-game injured list with a head injury, meaning P.J. Walker will start against Ottawa (1-6). Adams was injured in the second half of Calgary's 23-21 loss to Montreal last week. He was hit by Alouettes' linebacker Tyrice Beverette following a seven-yard run. He was able to walk off the field on his own, but didn't return. Montreal outscored Calgary 9-0 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Adams completed 15-of-25 passes for 193 yards and a TD and had just the one run. Walker completed three-of-seven pass attempts for 20 yards Receiver Damien Alford (hamstring) is also out, while receiver Jalen Philpot (hamstring) is questionable. Calgary acquired Adams from the B.C. Lions following the 2024 campaign. He has thrown for 1,913 yards and nine TDs this season. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 20, 2025.
