Japanese shipping firm plans to start container services from Mormugao port
At least three shipping lines, including the Japanese shipping firm Ocean Network Express (ONE), expressed interest in commencing container movement at Mormugao port after the monsoon.
Additionally, Delta Ports, which handles operations at Berth No 10 and 11 of Mormugao port, is in active discussions with Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) to include Goa in the SMILE (SCI-Middle-East-India-Liner-Express) service.
ONE's senior management team, led by its managing director Masahiro Sakikubo, undertook a comprehensive terminal tour of Mormugao port on Monday to assess the terminal's container-handling infrastructure.
ONE is jointly owned by the Japanese shipping lines Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Mitsui OSK Lines, and K Line.
'This is a major milestone where a global liner has entrusted us and visited Goa for restarting the container services. ONE's management showed keen interest in the ongoing developments at Delta port's Mormugao Terminal Private Limited, particularly regarding the resumption of container services. Our consistent efforts and engagement with stakeholders led to their first-hand visit, offering an encouraging outlook for Goa Port's future,' said an official of Delta Ports.
ONE, currently ranked fifth in the global container trade, operates a fleet of over 260 vessels with a capacity exceeding 2 million TEU.
MPA chairperson N Vinodkumar assured ONE of the port's full support, along with incentives to facilitate the commencement of container trade.
Encouragingly, Unifeeder, another logistics firm, is currently studying the feasibility of including Goa in its container network, engaging with leading shipping lines like CMA CGM, ONE, Maersk, MSC, and HMM to ship container cargo post-monsoon.
Port officials said that the inclusion of Mormugao port in the SCI's SMILE network will reduce road transport dependency and support cargo movement for salt, industrial salt, tiles, bentonite, and manufactured goods, benefitting local industries.
'Goa's exporters and importers will soon enjoy seamless global connectivity from their hometown port. "This initiative will particularly empower MSMEs, enabling them to compete confidently in international markets without the burden of high logistics costs,' said an MPA official.

India's 'Trump Card': Energy imports According to Aiyar, India is in a far better negotiating position than most. 'I really think we should be tough and hold out. Our strength is that because we are short of oil and gas, we can be among the very few countries that are going to shrink their trade deficit with the USA,' Aiyar said, according to an ET report quoting the TV channel. India's oil imports from the US jumped to 439,000 barrels per day in June, up from 280,000 bpd the month before. That's exactly the kind of stat Trump loves, evidence that a trading partner is helping reduce the US trade deficit. Agri and dairy: Red lines for India But if Trump expects a wide-ranging trade deal, India's agricultural sector is where things hit a wall. Aiyar warned that any move to open India's markets to genetically modified (GM) crops, such as GM soy, maize, and wheat, which dominate US agriculture, would trigger domestic and international consequences. 'If we allow this in, then we will not be allowed to export to Europe because Europe won't take genetically modified crops,' Aiyar was quoted as saying. So while Trump's farm lobby is pushing hard, India is unlikely to grant access. Also read: Vietnam's deal: More optics than economics Trump recently announced a deal with Vietnam, claiming zero-duty access and market entry. But Aiyar dismissed this as 'largely theatrical.' Vietnam, he said, imports very little from the US to begin with, so zero tariffs don't amount to much. 'The plain and simple fact is that they import very little from the USA… If they say import duty on cars comes down to zero, how many American companies are going to be competitive compared with the Japanese, Koreans, or Europeans?' Aiyar asked. Vietnam was already willing to offer zero tariffs on certain goods, and Trump's deal is more about symbolism than substance. Japan and EU are holding firm too India is not alone in resisting Washington's aggressive trade agenda. Both Japan and the European Union have rejected what they see as unfair, one-sided demands from the Trump administration. 'They are saying they are going to continue and have very serious problems with US proposals. We are not going to keel under,' Aiyar said. 'That sends a message to India and others, don't cave in.' With the July 9 deadline looming, Aiyar believes Trump is more focused on the headlines than the fine print. 'Even where there are partial agreements, as may be the case with India, he will play that up. He's a performer. A stage actor,' he said.

NCR records 7.2 million sq ft office leasing in H1 2025
NEW DELHI: The National Capital Region (NCR) has outperformed other Indian cities in both commercial and residential real estate in the first half of 2025, with a record-breaking 7.2 million sq ft of office space leased and a steep rise in ultra-luxury home sales, according to Knight Frank India 's latest report. Office Market: Strongest Leasing Momentum Ever Recorded in NCR NCR's office leasing rose by 27% year-on-year, hitting an all-time high, underlining the region's growing importance as a commercial hub. Gurugram, often seen as NCR's corporate epicentre, accounted for an overwhelming 65% of the total office leasing during the period—a sharp rise of 900 basis points compared to the same period last year. Notably, the demand wasn't just driven by India-facing enterprises. Global Capability Centres (GCCs)—companies that provide support services to global operations—ramped up their share of office leasing in NCR to 31% in H1 2025, equal to that of domestic firms. This indicates a rising confidence among global firms in NCR's talent pool and infrastructure readiness. The average rental value for office space in the region jumped 8% year-on-year to ₹93.5 per sq ft per month. Delhi's Central Business District remained the costliest, commanding rentals between ₹220 and ₹390 per sq ft per month. In Gurugram, Golf Course Road and Cyber City continued to dominate both demand and pricing. About 4.1 million sq ft of new supply was added across NCR during the same period, but the supply-demand gap for quality Grade A offices remains evident, prompting upward pressure on rents. Residential Market: Luxury Segment Shines Amid Overall Dip On the residential side, while overall sales and launches dipped slightly, the market story was driven by rising aspirations and a growing appetite for premium living. Housing sales across NCR stood at 26,795 units in H1 2025, marking an 8% year-on-year drop. New launches also saw a decline of 17%, totalling 25,233 units. Yet, within this subdued environment, the luxury housing segment recorded unprecedented activity. Sales of homes priced above ₹2 crore surged, accounting for 57% of total sales—up from 43% in H1 2024. Even more striking was the growth in ultra-luxury homes priced above ₹50 crore, where sales increased by a staggering 2,550% year-on-year. These marquee transactions were largely concentrated in Gurugram, reaffirming its position as NCR's high-end residential capital. The city alone contributed 51% to total housing sales and 55% to fresh supply, with sectors along Golf Course Extension Road, Southern Peripheral Road, and Dwarka Expressway witnessing heightened traction. Noida and Greater Noida together formed 30% of NCR's home sales, bolstered by infrastructure upgrades such as the ongoing work on the Noida International Airport in Jewar and metro expansions. The increased demand in these regions was predominantly in the mid to upper-mid segments. Residential prices across NCR averaged ₹5,535 per sq ft in H1 2025, reflecting a healthy 14% year-on-year increase. While the premium and luxury segments gained momentum, the affordable housing category (₹25–50 lakh) saw sales drop by 37%—a result of price escalations, land cost pressures, and tighter home loan dynamics. Shift in Buyer Sentiment and Developer Strategy What's emerging clearly is the buyer shift towards larger homes with better amenities, especially post-pandemic. Developers, in response, are increasingly launching high-ticket projects tailored to aspirational urban families and NRIs. Knight Frank's findings reflect a maturing market where both end-users and investors are focusing on long-term value. The rise of demand in studio apartments, branded residences, and gated communities equipped with health and wellness features also signal changing buyer preferences.
