Shamed Premier League ref David Coote hit by FA charges over social media video

Daily Mirror17-06-2025
David Coote has been charged by the Football Association over his comments about former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, which emerged in a video leaked on social media. He has been cleared of misconduct related to gambling.
The video, which appears to have been filmed several years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic and was posted on X in November, appears to feature Coote talking to a man while sitting on a sofa. In the footage, he allegedly called Liverpool "s***" and Klopp a "German c***".
Coote was immediately suspended by the PGMOL after the video emerged. He was then sacked by the Premier League in December, with the PGMOL saying Coote's actions made his position "untenable".
When he was suspended, the FA also launched an investigation into the official's conduct. That investigation has now concluded and has led to Coote being charged with acting in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words.
Because Coote was discussing Klopp's nationality, the FA believe the threshold of an 'aggravated breach' has been met. It will now be up to Coote to either accept or fight the charge.
An FA statement read: "David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jurgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1.
"It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality. No charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated."
Coote has been a Premier League referee since 2018, having overseen EFL games for eight years before that. He was sacked in December, with PGMOL insisting he had 'seriously breached' his contract.
"David Coote's actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract," the PGMOL said. "Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare."
The video appears to have been filmed the evening after a Liverpool game with the other man asking: "What did you think of the Liverpool game earlier?"
Coote allegedly responded by saying: "Liverpool were s***." The other man then asked: "What do you think of Jurgen Klopp?" To which Coote replied: "C***. Absolute c***.
"Aside from having a right pop at me when I refereed them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying then had a right f****** pop at me."
Referring to a second match in which he was acting as fourth official, he continued: "I've got no interest in speaking to someone who's f****** arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. James Milner's alright.
"You can see me there [in a picture on his phone] with a mask on. Got to careful right, we're social distancing, we're two metres apart. But my God, German c***. F*** me."
Coote then made a plea to whoever was being sent the video to not share it. He added: "Just to be clear, that f****** last video can't go anywhere. Seriously."

Jordan Henderson completes free-transfer switch to Brentford

The former Liverpool title-winning captain, 35, has agreed a two-year contract in west London. New Bees boss Keith Andrews moved for Henderson after losing Danish midfielder Christian Norgaard to Arsenal. 'When we became aware of Jordan's availability, it was a pretty simple decision,' Andrews told the Bees' website. 'We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is. He's still phenomenally fit and he's still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot. 'With the void of experienced players leaving the building – Christian Norgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee – it was important to replace that. 'What Jordan will bring is that he has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years. He's been at the forefront of driving for titles and Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club. 'He also has experience at international level with England and, with that, comes a level of experience, professionalism and dedication to his profession – that's the exact way we want to be as a football club.' Henderson, who has 84 England caps and was recently recalled by Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel, was a free agent after leaving Ajax in the summer. He spent 12 years with Liverpool before a controversial move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq in 2023.

What Newcastle signing Hugo Ekitike could mean for Alexander Isak's future amid Liverpool transfer interest

NEWCASTLE'S club-record bid for Hugo Ekitike could be writing in the stars for Alexander Isak's future. Fans reckon the arrival of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Ekitike might potentially deliver Isak right into Liverpool 's open hands. 7 7 7 But Newcastle have made it absolutely clear: the club have NO plans to sell their prolific starman Isak - not even for a British-record-obliterating £150million. Instead, Eddie Howe 's side are planning for Ekitike to compete alongside the Swedish talisman at St James' Park, following Callum Wilson 's exit. But naturally the rumour mill is in overdrive given how much Newcastle are prepared to cough up for Ekitike. Talks centre on what would be a club-record deal for the 23-year-old striker, with Newcastle offering a staggering £69.5million on Monday. Although Newcastle want to keep Isak, Ekitike's arrival would put the club in a better position to sell Isak next summer. Howe's side would be more open to cashing in on Isak, 25, if he doesn't renew his contract, which is up in 2028, over the next year. And Ekitike could be ready-made replacement for him, with Liverpool and Arsenal queuing up for Isak. Liverpool have previously revealed their willingness to play "a waiting game" for Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season. And Isak will surely see Arne Slot 's Premier League winning mega team as his best chance to can compete for the biggest prizes in world football. Isak is the Toon's current club-record signing after he joined in a £63million deal from Real Sociedad in August 2022. Arsenal Plot Big Double Transfer For Eberechi Eze and Hugo Ekitike! | Transfers Exposed 7 7 Yet there are admirers who believe that Ekitike has a higher ceiling and could end up becoming one of the best strikers in the world. He scored 22 goals in 48 games across all competitions last season for Frankfurt as he helped them qualify for the Champions League. The Frenchman is tall, at almost 6ft 3in, yet has excellent feet and speed, like Isak. His debut season in Germany, after his loan move from Paris Saint-Germain was made permanent, was impressive - 15 goals and eight assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances. Ekitike and Omar Marmoush formed a formidable partnership for Eintracht until Marmoush left for Manchester City in January. Newcastle almost signed Ekitike months before they spent an initial £60m on Isak in 2022. Ekitike, then at Reims, turned down a deadline day move to St James' Park in the winter window, instead choosing PSG after a season on loan the French capital. And after spending £3million on Ekitike from PSG in February 2024, Eintracht Frankfurt, now value him at £86million. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all registered their interest in Ekitike too. Newcastle have spent £55million on one major summer signing so far following the arrival of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest. 7 7
