6 ways ADHD impacts daily life as nearly 2.5 million people in England affected
This is the first time an estimate of how common the condition could be among the population has been made publicly available.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals process information, regulate emotions and interact with the world around them. While symptoms can differ between children and adults, the root cause remains the same: their brains function differently from those who are not neurodivergent.
According to NHS England, around 2,498,000 people may have ADHD – including those without a diagnosis. Of this number, an estimated 741,000 are children and young people aged five to 24.
ADHD is not usually diagnosed in children under five because some of the traits may be part of normal development, however it's estimated 147,000 preschoolers are likely to have the condition.
The new figures were developed using estimates from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice), which suggests that around 3-4% of adults and 5% of children and young people in England have the condition.
The figures also highlight growing pressure on healthcare services, revealing that as of March 2025, more than 549,000 people in England were estimated to be waiting for an ADHD assessment. This is up from the 416,000 people who were waiting at the end of March 2024.
The findings follow the release of Chris Packham's new BBC documentary, Inside Our ADHD Minds, which aired on 12 May. In the film, the 64-year-old broadcaster, who was diagnosed with autism at 44, explores the lived experiences of people with ADHD and criticises those who dismiss the condition as a fad.
During an interview with Good Morning Britain to promote the show, the naturalist and nature photographer said: "There is a tendency these days for people to say, 'Well, I think I'm a little bit autistic, a little bit ADHD, a little bit OCD,' but these are real conditions that impact people's lives all of the time. They're not a little bit any of these things. They're full on these things all of the time."
People with ADHD may have trouble with things like concentration, and organisation. They may also have signs of hyperactivity such as feeling restless, having high energy levels, being more talkative or making impulsive decisions.
"ADHD can greatly impact individuals lives," Tom Howcroft, from the ADHD Foundation explains. "Understanding its impacts and implementing effective management strategies can greatly enhance daily functioning and overall wellbeing.
"Receiving an ADHD diagnosis offers valuable insights into personal behaviours and challenges. By recognising the multifaceted impact of ADHD and implementing personalised management strategies, individuals can enhance their daily functioning and quality of life."
Howcroft says ADHD can lead to difficulties with concentration, organisation and completing tasks, which can impact your school or workplace performance.
The best practice for coping with times where you feel easily distracted is to break tasks down into more manageable chunks, advises Howcroft, so focus is only needed for a short period of time.
Techniques like the Pomodoro method (25 minutes working followed by a five-minute break) can be helpful.
ADHD can make forming and sustaining friendships difficult, Howcroft says, due to a lack of impulse control and hyperactivity. It can be useful to find support groups or a community of likeminded people who understand and perhaps even live with ADHD themselves.
Howcroft also recommends counselling and coaching that can provide tailored strategies to help deal with the process of coming to terms with a diagnosis and how to work with your neurodivergent brain.
Stress is an inevitable part of all our lives, but ADHD can lead to a heightened sense of low mood or anxiety. "Persistent stress can exacerbate ADHD symptoms, leading to heightened anxiety and potential depressive symptoms," Howcroft explains.
In these circumstances, try to take regular breaks to ground yourself and alleviate these feelings by going for a walk, doing exercise, spending time outside or with loved ones.
ADHD can also lead to "repeated challenges and misunderstandings, such as perceived failures due to impulsiveness or disorganisation which can impact self-confidence and self-worth," says Howcroft.
If you have ADHD, it's important to practice self-compassion and focus on leaning into how your brain works to reframe ADHD-related struggles.
ADHD has also been known to lead to "struggles with planning, prioritising and completing tasks, which can affect personal and professional responsibilities," Howcroft says.
It can often help to lean on productivity tools such as planners, reminders or apps such as Notion or Monday to organise your tasks and track responsibilities and upcoming deadlines. All of this preparation can help to reduce feelings of overwhelming or feeling flustered with juggling your workload or life admin.
"Individuals may experience 'time blindness' leading to difficulties in perceiving and managing time effectively," Howcroft continues. "Creating consistent daily schedules can provide structure and reduce uncertainty, aiding in task completion and time management."

Report into death of boy sent home from A&E says family's instinct not addressed
A new report into the death of a five-year-old boy after he was sent home from A&E has concluded that his mother's instinct that her child was unwell was 'repeatedly not addressed across services'. Yusuf Mahmud Nazir died on November 23 2022, eight days after he was seen at Rotherham Hospital and sent home with antibiotics. A report into Yusuf's case in October 2023, by independent consultants and published by NHS South Yorkshire, found his care was appropriate and 'an admission was not clinically required', but this was rejected by his family. Yusuf's uncle Zaheer Ahmed has always said they were told 'there are no beds and not enough doctors' in the emergency department, and that Yusuf should have been admitted and given intravenous antibiotics in Rotherham. A new report published on Thursday by NHS England said in its conclusions: 'Our primary finding is that the parental concerns, particularly the mother's instinct that her child was unwell, were repeatedly not addressed across services. 'A reliance on clinical metrics over caregiver insight caused distress for the family. 'This led to a lack of shared decision-making and there was limited evidence of collaborative discussions with Yusuf's family around clinical decisions, leading to a sense of exclusion and reduced trust in care plans.' Yusuf, who had asthma, was taken to the GP with a sore throat and feeling unwell on November 15. He was prescribed antibiotics by an advanced nurse practitioner. Later that evening, his parents took him to Rotherham Hospital urgent & emergency care centre (UECC) where he was seen in the early hours of the morning after a six-hour wait. Yusuf was discharged with a diagnosis of severe tonsillitis and an extended prescription of antibiotics. Two days later Yusuf was given further antibiotics by his GP for a possible chest infection, but his family became so concerned they called an ambulance and insisted the paramedics take him to Sheffield Children's Hospital rather than Rotherham. Yusuf was admitted to the intensive care unit on November 21 but developed multi-organ failure and suffered several cardiac arrests which he did not survive. The 2023 report said there was only one doctor in the paediatric UECC on November 15 and, after midnight, that medic was responsible for covering adults and children. It added that the doctor who saw Yusuf is an experienced UECC doctor who would not have needed to refer to a paediatrician to admit him.

Since 1927, Restaurant Acchiardo in the heart of Old Town Nice has been a beloved local haunt serving some of the region's most cherished Niçoise dishes. For four generations, the stone-walled eatery has been known for spotlighting the area's authentic flavors with plates like daube (beef stew braised in wine), panisses (crispy chickpea fritters), and trouchia (a savory frittata with Swiss chard). When she was a child, Virginie Acchiardo, whose great-grandmother opened Restaurant Acchiardo, cherished the aromatic feast that enveloped her senses every morning. Her family lived above the restaurant, and her father, part of the third generation to run it, was already hard at work. 'Every morning before going to school, we would go through the restaurant to have breakfast,' recalls Virginie Acchiardo, who is now the chef of her family's restaurant, which she co-owns and runs with her brothers Jean-François and Raphaël. 'Dad was already in the kitchen preparing dishes like beef stew with a red wine sauce.' She remembers the distinct savory aroma drifting up the stairwell. 'It still reminds me of my father,' she says. She also adored the calming sound of the metal whisk against the mixing bowl when her father beat egg whites to make the chocolate mousse. 'I would watch him in the kitchen,' she says. 'And when the chocolate melted I was always allowed to scrape the pan and taste the chocolate.' Cooking was not only in her DNA, it gave her a deep connection to those she loved. 'I always saw my father in the kitchen and it was a normal continuity,' says Acchiardo. 'Cooking brought me closer to my family. Since they were always at the restaurant, it allowed me to be with them.' While Acchiardo's training was not formal, it was deeply rooted in observation. 'My father said, 'A trade is not learned, it is stolen,'' she says. 'There are ways of doing things that are not written anywhere, especially not in textbooks. Each kitchen has its own organization.' She learned everything from her father, who in turn learned from his grandmother, Madalin. 'I am very proud that I can still make the same recipes from almost 100 years ago, and I am even more proud to be able to work with my two brothers,' she says. 'And our children, the fifth generation, are already starting to work with us, which is also a great source of pride.' Madalin Acchiardo was a widow when she opened Acchiardo in 1927. She and her husband, Giuseppe, who died in 1920, had very little money but saved for years to buy the buy the restaurant and building. Both born in Piedmont in a little Italian village named Norat, Madalin had arrived in Nice in 1896. Working as a maid for a rich family since she was a child she came to Nice alone without her parents. 'They had a lot of courage because life wasn't easy. The restaurant was never closed. They worked all the time,' says Virginie Acchiardo. 'The dishes they made were truly traditional family recipes that were simple and, above all, inexpensive.' In 2027, Restaurant Acchiardo will celebrate its centennial, and in the same locale where it opened all those years ago. 'This is much more than a restaurant. This is our home. We were born here in this building,' says Virginie Acchiardo. 'When customers come to our restaurant, it is as if they are coming into our home.
