Rams training camp preview: Who steps up at inside linebacker?
No position group on the Los Angeles Rams' depth chart is more fluid than inside linebacker. There are four players vying for two starting spots, ranging from a veteran such as Troy Reeder to a rookie in Chris Paul Jr.
There's a lot to be sorted out at this spot, and while it may not be a highly prioritized position for Sean McVay and Les Snead, it is a critical role on defense. So who will emerge as the two starters? And who will remain on the field as a three-down linebacker once the season begins?
Training camp will help the Rams figure things out at a wide-open position.
Roster locks
Speights took over as a starter next to Christian Rozeboom after Troy Reeder got hurt, maintaining his grip on that role through the end of the season. Landman was a free-agent addition following his stint with the Falcons, while Paul was a fifth-round pick out of Ole Miss.
All three should be locks to make the team despite none of them being certain to be starters on defense.
Likely to make it
Reeder was close to making this tier, especially with his special teams value, but there's no guaranteed the Rams will even keep four inside linebackers. They could go with just three to start the year in hopes of stashing Reeder on the practice squad if he clears waivers (which he should).
On the bubble
Reeder probably has the edge over the other three linebackers in this group, simply because he's a former starter on defense. But he regressed last year and fell out of favor, with the Rams opting not to activate him off IR despite having the opportunity to in the postseason.
Dolac is the only undrafted rookie at inside linebacker but he's certainly not someone to overlook after the career he had at Buffalo.
Position battle to watch
It's possible this will be a four-for-two deal: four players competing for two starting spots. The pecking order could be just as it's listed above, with Speights having the first crack at a starting job and Landman close behind him. Paul will need to earn his stripes as a fifth-round rookie but the promise is certainly there; he's the most athletic linebacker on the team.
Potential sleeper
Dolac had an FBS-leading 168 tackles at Buffalo last season, along with five interceptions, 6.5 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss. He was all over the field and he'll try to keep up that reputation as a member of the Rams in training camp.
In such a wide-open position group, Dolac has a chance to make some noise this summer.

Vikings' Dallas Turner opens up about his offseason plan for a breakout 2025
Dallas Turner is under a microscope heading into his second year, especially with the team having to look around and see the likes of Chop Robinson and Jared Verse thrive with the teams that picked them. While Turner was drafted 17th overall, Verse was drafted 19th by the Rams, and Robinson was selected 21st by the Dolphins. While Turner looks to join his draft classmates in the top tier of pass rushers, he took some steps this offseason to get there. Speaking at training camp, Turner gave everyone a glimpse into who he worked with and how he is getting ready for the new season. Turner explained his offseason work and the urgency he had, saying, 'Right after the season… [Greenard and I] were hitting it strong in the weight room, watching film, picking each other's brain. He has a lot of knowledge. He's one of the best vets on the team… it was a good opportunity to be around him and spend time with him and see how he got to this point in his career.' For Turner, he is behind two Pro Bowlers, compared to Robinson and Verse, who are on the same team as Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard. What is going to turn Turner, though, is that Brian Flores has shown he will use a rotation of pass rushers in his schemes. Turner didn't get a lot of playing time last year, so tracking his snaps in the preseason will be critical to setting expectations.

Astros' Disturbing Announcement Gives Team MLB Lead in Unwanted Category
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. One of the great mysteries of this season has to be how the Houston Astros are doing what they are doing. After starting the year as a .500 team as late as May 12 when their record stood at 20-20, the Astros entered Friday's game at Daikin Park against the club formerly known as the Oakland Athletics with a five-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the American League West. At 60-43, the Astros went into Friday tied with the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers for the fourth-best record in baseball. DUNEDIN, FLORIDA - MARCH 10: Joe Espada #19 of the Houston Astros looks against the Toronto Blue Jays during a Grapefruit League spring training game at TD Ballpark on March 10, 2025 in Dunedin, Florida. MoreWhat's so mysterious about a team playing well? In the Astros' case, the astonishing part is how they've been doing it despite being torn apart by injuries. And the Houston health situation only got worse on Friday when the Astros announced another addition to their injured list. The Astros placed 28-year-old rookie southpaw starter Brandon Walter on the list, bringing the total number of Houston players on the IL to an MLB-leading 18. Walter was in the midst of becoming one of the feel-good stories of the year. Drafted at the bottom of the 26th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2019, the 797th player taken overall — after undergoing Tommy John surgery in college at Delaware and missing the entire 2020 season due to the minor league shutdown caused by the COVID pandemic — the lefty vaulted up the rankings to become the Red Sox' No. 9 overall prospect by 2022. The Red Sox called him up on June 22, 2023, but limited him to just 23 innings in nine games. Walter missed all of last season with a rotator cuff injury, but did not even get to finish the season on the Red Sox roster. Boston abruptly designated him for assignment on July 31 and released him two days later. More MLB: First-Place Astros Hit With Disappointing News on Playoff Hero Pitcher Less than two weeks after that, Walter signed a minor league deal with the Astros. Finally healthy, at least as far as his shoulder was concerned, Walter got the call to the big league club on on May 20 and has proven a steady addition to the starting rotation for a Houston club with seven other pitchers on the injured list. In nine starts, Walter has posted a solid 3.35 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings. Walter told Astros beat reporter Brian McTaggart that his problem this time is not his shoulder, but his elbow. An MRI, however, showed only "inflammation," the pitcher told McTaggart, which Walter called "pretty encouraging," adding that he did not expect to be on the shelf for a lengthy period. 'He's the linchpin': Rams DC Chris Shula praises Quentin Lake's rising impact
Los Angeles Rams safety Quentin Lake might not be a household name, but within the building, there is no doubt how important he is to the defense. Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula praised Lake's role and efforts, as he enters a contract year. From his communication to tackling to versatility, Shula referred to his safety as the "linchpin" of the Rams' defense, and a do-it-all player who helps elevate those around him. 'He's everything,' Shula said following Friday's training camp practice. 'Communicator, he moves around. How I like to say it is he allows us always to get our best guys on the field.' Lake's role isn't just defined by a single position. Shula, in his second season coordinating the team's defense, noted that the former UCLA product has the ability to seamlessly transition from playing nickel to covering receivers in the slot to dropping deep in the post as a safety, all while bringing a physical style of play near the line of scrimmage. 'These days, a lot of times when you are playing nickel, you get put in the run-through,' Shula said. 'You're almost like a linebacker sometimes in a 4-3 defense. He does that. The next thing, he's covering a slot receiver and then the next thing, he's deep playing middle of the post safety. Now he's playing a half field.' In three seasons, the former 2022 sixth-round pick, who has seen his role grow year after year, has recorded 174 tackles, 12 pass deflections, three sacks, and nine pressures. Last season, Lake finished second on the team in combined tackles (111) and first in solo tackles (73) while recording a pair of sacks and seven pressures, all of which were career highs. His ability to play all over the field speaks volumes to his football IQ and toughness, two traits that Shula has praised a ton on the 26-year-old. 'I think he's one of the best tacklers on the team,' Shula added. 'But I think he's probably one of the most underrated physical players in the league. He's always been one of our best tacklers and he's been one of our best communicators—smart. You can do a lot of stuff with him just because you're not going to overload him and he's going to get everybody right around him. In addition, I think he makes the guys around him play better, too.' As the team's 2025 training camp is just underway, Lake's name might not be trending the most, but his impact will surely be felt on every snap. For a Rams defense looking to improve upon its 26th overall ranking from a year ago, having a versatile player who can help anchor the back end and do a little bit of everything his coaches ask of him is everything the Rams value.
