Breakout Stars to Watch For the 2025-26 Season
As many teams across the world of football are well into their preseason preparation for the 2025-26 season, it's the most opportune time to provide an update to our list of potential breakout stars who you should be keeping your eye on this season.
The proof is in the pudding. Last year, our list consisted of Amad, Morgan Rogers, and Pau Cubarsi, three players who had phenomenal campaigns in 2024-25 and look set to continue their upward trajectory.
The parameters of inclusion remain the same — any players who were under the age of 23 at the start of the season are eligible. However, this time we've added a couple of women as well. That's enough for the preamble, we'll kick off this year's list with some of the brightest up-and-coming stars in world football.
Poised For a Big Leap
Gonzalo García
Despite their humbling loss to PSG at the end of the FIFA Club World Cup, there were several positives for Real Madrid to take from the tournament. While Arda Guler's emergence as a certified option in central midfield for Xabi Alonso was a bright spot, it's impossible to look past Gonzalo Garcia.
With Kylian Mbappe missing the entirety of the group stage, the 21-year-old was given his opportunity to lead the line, and he grabbed it with both hands. In his six CWC appearances, he bagged four goals and an assist, and showed impressive predatory instincts throughout. He feels like a proper old school No. 9, and his off-ball movement combined with ruthless finishing means he's an immediate challenger to Mbappe for the starting striker role.
With Rodrygo's future still up in the air and the seemingly ever-changing dynamic of Real Madrid's front line, we could be in for a proper breakout year from Madrid's new gem. If you'll be betting on La Liga this year, García might be a good place to start.
Michelle Agyemang
A couple of months ago, very few people knew about Arsenal's teenage striker Michelle Agyemang. Still, a lightning-quick goal less than a minute into her debut for the England senior team meant she put herself in contention for a place at the summer's Women's European Championships.
Much like Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo two summers prior, Agyemang massively made her mark and has become a darling of the nation, with her goals being absolutely vital to England's campaign and eventual triumph over Spain in the final. Her performances at the EUROs earned her the Young Player of the Tournament award and instantly made her a household name in women's football.
She spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Brighton, gaining valuable first-team experience, but her return to the defending UWCL champions in 2025 could be the catalyst for a signature season from the young Lioness.
Lily Yohannes
One of the United States women's national team's crown jewels, Lily Yohannes recently confirmed her transfer to OL Lyonnes in the French top flight. Her stellar season for Ajax in 2024-25 was the best campaign she's had so far, where she bagged six goals and three assists in 19 games from central midfield. Her unreal ability on the ball means she is an immense attacking threat and can create both for herself and others almost at will.
At just 18 years old, she joins the eight-time European champions and the dominant force in French football, and in a young career that has already seen her become the youngest ever starter in the UEFA Women's Champions League, she is set to shatter more records for club and country going forward.
Marc Bernal
With the rate at which La Masia churns out new ballers, it feels like we'll have a Barcelona representative on every iteration of this list. Last year, it was Pau Cubarsi who was a fixture at the heart of the Blaugrana defense that went on to secure a domestic treble. This time, it's Marc Bernal who's next up.
Bernal burst onto the scene at the beginning of last season, aged only 17, and his first few appearances had Barcelona fans in awe. He showed composure and maturity far beyond his years, and the fact that so many immediately drew comparisons to Barça legend Sergio Busquets should tell you all you need to know about his play style.
Football is often a cruel game, and Bernal's potential breakout season was halted by an ACL injury that saw him miss the majority of that campaign. He only recently began training again, but should his fitness hold up, he stands a real chance at breaking into the stacked Barcelona midfield.
The Next Generation
Gilberto Mora
Mexico's Gilberto Mora became the youngest player to ever win a senior international trophy when he started in Mexico's 2-1 Gold Cup victory over the United States this summer. He assisted Raul Jimenez for the winning goal that booked their spot in the final, before an assured performance in the big game helped his nation to another triumph over their old foes.
He plays in Liga MX for Xolos de Tijuana, and he made his professional debut when he was still only 15 during the 2024-25 season before becoming the youngest ever goalscorer in the league's history.
With confirmed interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Barcelona, we could be seeing Mora make the switch sooner rather than later.
Max Dowman
His performances for Arsenal in their opening two preseason fixtures have sent fans into delirium, but the hidden gem section is still where Max Downman belongs (for now). At just 15 years old, his inclusion in Mikel Arteta's traveling squad ahead of what is a potential make-or-break season for the Spaniard tells you everything you need to know about this talented teen.
He's a dynamic attacking midfielder, and his obscene combination of technical ability and eye for goal at his age is frightening. Many across social media have begun to tout him as England's answer to Lamine Yamal, and while we won't go that far yet, it's an interesting conversation to have.
Dowman turns 16 at the end of this calendar year and will subsequently be able to see first-team minutes in the second half of the season. While he will start the season playing U18 football once again, you should definitely keep an eye on Dowman, because, as we saw with Miles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri last season, despite their age, players are sometimes too good to deny.

What Alexander Isak's agent said about transfer as Anfield rumors swirl
Alexander Isak's agent recently suggested that the Newcastle United forward is close to taking "the next step" in his career, and it was rumored that one of his representatives was at Anfield on Monday. Liverpool played a double-header against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, and the Reds won 4-1 and 3-2 with two different squads. The Anfield Wrap claimed that one of Isak's agents was at Anfield, sending social media into overdrive. Isak has expressed a desire to leave Newcastle this summer, but the club rejected Liverpool's $145 million offer. Newcastle has since sent an official bid worth $105 million to RB Leipzig for striker Benjamin Sesko, which has sparked mass speculation that Isak may join Liverpool. READ MORE: Harvey Elliott sees Liverpool exit option open up after nightmare injury blow READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Alexander Isak boost, Will Wright joins, Bilbao double action The 25-year-old is represented by Universal Twenty Two, and one of his agents, Gonzalo Gaitan, recently discussed his client and a potential transfer. "We are already studying and analyzing all options, and we may be close to finalizing the next step for the player," Gaitin said, via Saudi Arabian outlet Arriyadiyah. Isak helped Newcastle end a 70-year wait for silverware last season and scored in a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the League Cup Final. Despite achieving hero status, Isak expressed his desire to leave Newcastle in July. Newcastle was in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike earlier this summer, with ambitious plans to partner him with Isak. However, Liverpool hijacked the move and signed Ekitike for an initial fee worth $92 million. Despite signing Ekitike, Liverpool then switched its attention to Isak. The striker missed Newcastle's preseason tour due to a reported thigh injury, but it's believed he's pushing to join Liverpool. After making a formal offer, Liverpool has yet to submit an improved bid for Isak. However, should Leipzig accept Newcastle's offer for Sesko, then a record bid could force the club to part ways with Isak. Due to uncertainty surrounding his future, Isak has been training alone since Liverpool's opening bid. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe hasn't spoken to Isak since the offer was made, but sent him a clear message. After Newcastle's preseason tour in Asia ended, Howe condemned Isak's behavior and warned him that isolated training may continue once the squad returns to England. "You have to earn the right to train with us," Howe told the Daily Mail. "We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. "We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal." Howe also distanced himself from the transfer saga because he focused on Newcastle's preseason tour. "Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home," he said.

Cowboys and Micah Parsons negotiations have lagged 2 weeks into training camp, but that doesn't mean Parsons isn't talking with leadership
OXNARD, Calif. — As the Dallas Cowboys' first-team offense faced its first-team defense in 11-on-11 drills Monday, Micah Parsons watched from the sideline. The two-time All-Pro edge rusher wore his No. 11 navy jersey atop a gray sweatshirt and sweatpants, and his basketball shoes instead of cleats were yet another sign he would not be practicing. But Parsons wasn't simply present to hold in, rather than hold out, to avoid absence fines amid lagging negotiations on a contract extension. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] He was busy with conversation throughout the two-hour session, even as he abstained from contact and full participation. 'The meetings have been really good,' Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said. 'What you see from him is the coaching piece of it and all that that he's doing. Diving into the other guys and I don't think you'll see much different. 'But again: very engaged, asks good questions, and I don't think that that's going to change.' Two weeks have elapsed since the Cowboys reported to training camp in California, a two-week period in which Parsons has not fully participated in any practice. On Monday, Parsons spoke at length with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to the side of defensive line drills during periods of individual work. He then spent most of team drills with Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay, Parsons and McClay watching at ground level from the sideline while team owner and general manager Jerry Jones watched from an adjacent temporary tower. Parsons also spent time with cornerback Trevon Diggs during the Cowboys' late-practice 7-on-7 period. Parsons wore his Cowboys jersey Monday after not doing so Saturday (the players were off Sunday). It was unclear whether Schottenheimer directly asked Parsons to return to wearing his jersey, but it was not unclear whether Schottenheimer preferred that. 'Not a big deal,' Schottenheimer said. 'I mean, we want all of our guys to be the same. And again, there's usually a reason if a guy's not in that. But again, for the most part we're a team. We're going to always act like a team and usually you'll see them all in gear.' Parsons' reason for not wearing the jersey Saturday seemed either connected to, or fortuitously timed near, his Friday request for a trade. Parsons enters the fifth-year option of his rookie deal with the team that selected him 12th overall in 2021. He's dominated in his first four campaigns, racing to 52.5 sacks, 256 tackles, 112 quarterback hits and nine forced fumbles in 63 games. The Cowboys insist they want to pay him and plan to keep him. But negotiations dovetailed when Parsons met directly with Jones in March, a meeting that Jones considered a formal negotiation — a premise that left Parsons feeling misled. Parsons asked the Cowboys to continue and finalize negotiations with his agent, David Mulugheta. Jones became frustrated that Parsons wasn't simply honoring the deal the team owner believed they had, multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiation factors told Yahoo Sports. As of Friday, the Cowboys had yet to send Mulugheta a single contract offer. 'Still not a call[,] email or text to my agent about starting a negotiation,' Parsons wrote in a post on Twitter. 'Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract.' That remained true as of Monday evening, a person with knowledge of negotiations confirmed to Yahoo Sports. The Cowboys seem to be taking a good cop-bad cop approach, with Jones digging his heels in with, at times, hard-ball negotiation tactics while the coaching staff and even front-office members like McClay continue to engage Parsons. The coaching staff has been hesitant to comment or speculate on where negotiations will go, downplaying what the loss of Parsons means to offensive linemen unable to get the caliber of reps an All-Pro could provide. But Schottenheimer said defensive game plans will not change amid Parsons' current stance. The coaching staff expects Parsons to be available for the Sept. 4 season opener at the Philadelphia Eagles and beyond. 'We're still planning on moving Micah around and putting him in all the spots that we see him and using our fronts the way we want to see it,' Schottenheimer said. 'We go about our business every day. We live in the moment. We focus in the moment. And again, like I said, I talked to you guys the other day, not going to get a lot into it. 'But I expect Micah to be here.'
