DRDO lab conducts trials of software-defined radio, communication system

A unit of the Defence Research & Development Organisation has "successfully" carried out field trials of a compact software defined radio (SDR) and a key communication system, reinforcing the commitment of the organisation in developing indigenous and mission critical communication solution for the national security, officials said.
The trials were done by Defence Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL), Dehradun in Joshimath area of Uttarakhand.
"Both the systems demonstrated robust and reliable performance meeting the user defined operational benchmarks," the DRDO said in a post on X on Tuesday.
The trials were conducted in close coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs, central armed police forces (CAPFs) and other agencies, it said.
"DEAL, Dehradun successfully carried out the field trials of SDR Manpack and Compact Transhorizon Communication System (CTCS) in Joshimath, Uttarakhand. The trials were conducted in close coordination with MHA/CAPFs/DLIC user agencies and DEAL teams. Officers from various paramilitary force which includes ITBP, SSB, BSF, Assam Rifles, IB, NSG, CRPF, CISF and other agencies also participated in the trials," the DRDO post said.
The trials were conducted in varied terrain and operational environment, aiming to rigorously validate the performance of both the systems in real world conditions including "verification of key parameters as per QR & TDs," it added.
According to the DRDO website, an "SDR is a secure indigenous system with legacy communication support and secure digital voice/data communication for naval application with 3 channel (2V/UHF band and 1 HF band), 4-channel (2V/UHF band and 2L-band) for tactical communication and single channel operation in V/UHF (Manpack role) and UHF band (handheld role)".
And, CTCS is a "large hop terrestrial backhaul communication system" developed by DEAL, Dehradun, for ensuring high data rate connectivity to user station and remote locations. This system can be used in the remote locations where civil communication grid is not present, according to information available on the DRDO website.
"Both the systems demonstrated robust and reliable performance meeting the user defined operational benchmarks. The milestone reinforces the commitment of DRDO in developing indigenous and mission critical communication solution for national security," the DRDO said in its post and also shared some photos of the trial process.

ISTAR aircraft can give an edge by providing real-time intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition. Its advanced sensors can provide crucial data to commanders on which they can make precise decisions in complex battle environments. In the volatile geopolitical environment where the Indian Air Force operates, intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) aircraft are crucial for tracking enemy activity, identifying key targets, and guiding long-range, precise attacks. The ISTAR Program Under Rs 10,000 crore ISTAR project, the IAF will acquire three aircraft from foreign aviation manufacturers most likely from Boeing or Bombardier. This brings the total IMF financial support disbursed so far to SDR 1.27 billion ($1.74 billion). The IMF executive board recently completed the fourth review under the 48-month Extended Fund Facility with Sri Lanka. Despite a positive economic outlook, global trade policy uncertainties pose significant risks to Sri Lanka's macroeconomic and social stability, the IMF said. It offered the country immediate access to special drawing rights worth 254 million to support economic policies and reforms. Sustained revenue mobilisation is critical to restoring fiscal sustainability and creating fiscal space, it noted. 'Sri Lanka's performance under the Fund-supported arrangement is generally strong with some implementation risks being addressed. Reforms are bearing fruit, with economic growth strengthening, inflation remaining low, reserves accumulating and fiscal revenues improving. The debt restructuring process is nearing completion,' noted Kenji Okamura, IMF deputy managing director and acting chair, in a statement. 'Sustained revenue mobilisation is critical to restoring fiscal sustainability and creating fiscal space. Strengthening tax exemption frameworks, boosting tax compliance and enhancing public financial management to ensure effective arrears management are important,' he said. 'Further improving the coverage and targeting of social support to the vulnerable is also necessary. Gujarat govt to roll out global-standard street design norms

Gandhinagar: As part of its 'Urban Development Year' initiative for 2025–26, the Gujarat government is set to revamp the way cities are planned and experienced by introducing international-level Street Design Regulations (SDR). Inspired by urban centres such as London, Paris, and Singapore, the move aims to create walkable, green, and people-friendly streets that double as public spaces for leisure, movement, and tourism. Sources in the state urban development department said a proposal to amend the existing General Development Control Rules (GDCR) has been drafted. This includes specific provisions for transforming roads into 'complete streets'—thoroughfares that prioritise pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport alongside vehicles. "In global cities, streets are vibrant public spaces and key tourist attractions. We want to create similar experiences in Gujarat's urban areas," said a senior govt official. Basic street sections will be identified in DPs and later tailored during the drafting of TPS and LAPs. To legally anchor this approach, the state also plans to amend the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development Act (GTPUDA), making the integration of walkable streets mandatory in all statutory planning documents. In addition, the state will frame a comprehensive set of SDRs and publish official guidelines to direct the design and implementation of urban streets across diverse cityscapes. These guidelines will ensure that new street infrastructure is safe, accessible, and designed with the pedestrian in mind. To showcase the model, the state will also support pilot projects in key cities, developing selected roads as 'walkable, green and complete streets'. A dedicated Challenge Fund will be established to encourage cities to take up these pilots, which are expected to serve as templates for future expansion. Officials added that the initiative will also include changes in legislation and policy to strengthen street management and ensure smooth enforcement of the new norms.
