Art with Cantona and puppet animals lined up for Manchester international festival

The Guardian11-03-2025
A giant herd of puppet animals raising awareness of the climate crisis and artwork inspired by footballers including Eric Cantona are part of the 10th edition of the Manchester international festival (MIF), whose organisers want visitors to have 'a moment to reflect'.
The former Manchester United footballer Juan Mata and the art curator Hans Ulrich Obrist have put together the event's 'set piece', a celebration of the beautiful game where artists and footballers collaborated on purpose-made artworks.
The England Lionesses midfielder Ella Toone, the former Netherlands and Juventus enforcer Edgar Davids, and the Manchester United great Cantona are among the footballers taking part in Football City, Art United, which will take place in Aviva Studios and include sculpture, sound installations and animation.
It was inspired after a conversation between MIF's artistic director, John McGrath, the poet Lemn Sissay, Obrist and Mata, who saw MIF's Poets Slash Artist show, where visual artists and poets collaborated, and asked if something similar could be done with footballers. Mata also featured in 2023's edition of the festival, working with Obrist and Tino Sehgal.
McGrath said: 'It's about treating both things with mutual respect, not just can we do something smart and arty about football but rather asking what's the creativity behind these great human endeavours.'
Low Kee Hong, who curated the festival alongside McGrath, said he wanted the 18-day event, which has expanded to include sites across Greater Manchester, to be a place where people could 'transcend the stress of everyday'.
'We open up our phones and it's a shitshow,' said Kee Hong, who previously led arts organisations in Hong Kong and Singapore, and will oversee future MIF editions. 'It's important that we're reminded that we are capable of hope and joy.
'It's not escapism. But because we live in the world we live in right now, it's more important to lean into the way artists are fashioning and seeing the world … We also need to ask what kind of world do we want to live in?'
The tagline of the festival is 'Dream Differently', and other highlights include The Herds, a group of animal creations designed by the team behind the Little Amal puppet. It is hoped they will provoke thought about the climate crisis.
The Royal Exchange theatre is also hosting the premiere of Liberation, by Ntombizodwa Nyoni. The play is inspired by the fifth Pan-African Congress, held in Manchester in October 1945, which was attended by the anti-colonial activist and later Kenyan prime minister Jomo Kenyatta, the eventual Ghanian prime minister Kwame Nkrumah, and the American writer WEB Du Bois.
Christopher Isherwood's novel A Single Man is being turned into a stage version by MIF and the Royal Ballet while Blackhaine, who has collaborated with Kanye West, will perform his new work And Now I Know What Love Is, taking inspiration from the 'seemingly desolate spaces' of urban landscapes in the north-west of England, where he grew up.
Two Indigenous artists will also come to Manchester: Santiago Yahuarcani's first international solo show will be held at the Whitworth art gallery, and the queer collective FAFSWAG will take over HOME during MIF with work that includes live cultural ceremonies.
The film-maker and artist Juliet Ellis's new work A Symphony of Flesh and Bones is an exploration of the male body through the prism of her father, a world champion bodybuilder, and her brother, a former cage fighter.
The Herds will open MIF on 3 July and the event runs until 20 July in various venues around Manchester city centre and Greater Manchester.

Christian Eriksen sees Rangers as a transfer 'draw' with 49ers ready to fulfil recruitment pledge

The Denmark international remains without a club after leaving Manchester United at the end of last season Rangers would be a "draw" for Christian Eriksen this summer as he the free agent weighs up his next move. The former Manchester United playmaker is on the lookout for a new club after leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season. Murmurs have lingered throughout the summer that the new owners at Ibrox, 49ers Enterprises, could make a move for the experienced Dane. However, cash-rich English Championship side Wrexham have reportedly made their move to make the 33-year-old the latest big name added by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. But former Red Dragon's striker Matt Jensen has told Eriksen that a move to the Scottish Premiership would be the better move - if Russell Martin 's men can navigate the Champions League qualifiers. He told OLBG: " Rangers are a huge club and they've got Champions League football. So that's probably a bigger draw. "I think it would take an awful lot of money for Wrexham to sign Eriksen. I know they have a lot of money, but do they have that much? "If he wants English football he should go to Wrexham but it depends on personal circumstances and whether he's happy to move. If he is, I would say Rangers were a stronger option. "Even with Eriksen, I've got Wrexham down to struggle next season. There is a lot of quality in the Championship and it's a massive step up. "Every league is a step up, but League One to Championship in particular is a very big step. "It's always difficult when a player is reaching those golden age years and coming towards the end of his career. "Then you have the expectation levels, because he'll be nowhere near as good as he once was in his prime. Again if Wrexham are going to struggle next season, is that going to suit the type of player that Eriksen is?" A blockbuster deal could fulfil one of the US owners early promises to the shareholders - with a "surprise" said to be on the cards. Speaking at Rangers EGM, Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises - who now own the Glasgow giants alongside pharmaceutical tycoon Andrew Cavenagh - promised shareholders that there would be names emerging that would raise the eyebrows of fans. He said: "If we share who we're targeting that players becomes more expensive. It's best for you all if we surprise you with the players we bring in!" Lionesses' Ella Toone and Alessia Russo's friendship will warm your heart

More than just footie friends, the Lionesses' star players Ella Toone and Alessia Russo go way back, and their sickly sweet bond has made fans go 'ahh' one adorable social media shout-out at a time. Growing up together, the England players shot to fame after winning the Euros with the squad last summer and have continued to capture the hearts of the nation with their unwavering support for one another. Ella, 25, and Alessia, 26, have played together since they were just 12 years old, and their time spent tag-teaming at Manchester United allowed for an almost telepathic connection on the pitch with their national team. As the women – led by coach Sarina Wiegman – tackle Spain this weekend in the UEFA Women's Euros 2025 final, here's a look inside the #friendship goals that is 'Tooney & Lessi Russoooooo'… The Tyldesley, Manchester, native first met the Maidstone, Kent, player when she was just 12 years old. Forming a fast friendship, the soon-to-be iconic duo became joint at the hip after they both signed contracts to play alongside each other at Manchester United. Spending three years learning to work as one, the close friends expressed their heartache as Alessia decided to leave the north and return to the south to play with Arsenal in January 2023. Commenting on her pal's big move at the time, Ella took to TikTok to share a message of support with Alessia, saying: 'Away from football, I just wanted to say best of luck to my best friend Alessia, moving clubs. 'I'm really proud of you and hope you smash it, I'm definitely going to miss you and spending time with you every single day. 'But I know you'll be great and I know we'll be friends forever. Love ya, miss ya and enjoy it.' The high-profile goal scorer reciprocated her friend's loving words and told GQ: 'There are so many highs and lows in football, and to have a constant in your best friend throughout that is really nice. 'We've seen each other at our best and worst. We've had the highest of highs last summer, winning the Euros together, and had some tough points too, but that just makes the friendship stronger. 'We've been friends since we were 12 or 13, and we'll be friends forever.' Despite working together on the field, the best friends regularly appear as a duo in the showbiz world too, joining each other on campaign shoots and for hilarious interviews. In 2023, for example, they tried a career in fashion modelling on for size and posed for Elle's front cover together. Adopting edgy outfits for the high-fashion shoot, the pair opened up about their goals as young girls and said: '[We] both had the dream of one day playing for England, so then to do it and [win], it was special. 'I don't think many best friends can say that they've done that.' Ella chimed in and added to Alessia's response, admitting she found fame 'hard to get used to'. Earlier this year, the athletes further reflected on their fame and their fears of their sporting careers impacting them when they want to start families. During an episode of their podcast, The Tooney & Russo Show, in which they were interviewed by DJ Vick Hope, Ella mused: 'Do I make sure I try and achieve what I can and then step away from the game and have my own family?' Alessia added that she, too, has anxieties about fertility as a top female footballer. The striker said: 'You don't know how you're going to come back, and you also don't know how long it can take to get pregnant or if you can have kids. You've just got to live in the here and now. More Trending 'With football and how fast it moves and how much you want to do and you want to win, it [having a family] takes a little bit of a backseat. 'But then I think it's exciting to know you've got another chapter after football where you can have a whole second life.' Whatever happens in the future, we have no doubt this pair will continue cheerleading for one another, with Ella proving how very cool it is to have a footie pal just weeks ahead of the Euros final. 'Not many best friends can say that they play for England together,' she declared after thrashing Wales 6-1. Got a story? Marcus Rashford makes first Barcelona appearance in short-lived cameo – as he is subbed on and off during pre-season friendly after completing loan move from Man United

Marcus Rashford made his Barcelona debut on Sunday after completing his loan move from Manchester United. Rashford, 27, pulled on the famous blue and red stripes of his new club for the first time in a 3-1 friendly win over Japanese side Vissel Kobe as a substitute but was then replaced shortly afterwards. He was pictured wearing the No. 14 jersey, which has previously been worn by Thierry Henry during his three-year spell at the Nou Camp. Hansi Flick's side will play two more pre-season matches in South Korea and a fixture against Como back in Spain, giving Rashford a chance to stake his claim for a spot in the German's starting lineup. He will look to lead his side to a defence of the LaLiga title they won last season when their domestic campaign begins on August 16 against Mallorca. Upon signing for the Blaugrana on Wednesday, he described it as being a 'joy' to play for Barcelona and saying that he feels like he is 'at home' after completing a season long loan move from Manchester United. While Barcelona have initially completed a loan move for Rashford, who had spoken openly about his desire to join the club, the Spanish giants have an option to make the move permanent next summer. Barcelona announced the move with Rashford standing inside an iconic red telephone box picking up the phone during an unveiling video, with the forward saying: 'Yeah, you can tell them now, its official.' After leaving the telephone box, Rashford said 'Let's do this, visca el Barca.' Speaking at his unveiling as a Barcelona player, Rashford expressed his excitement at signing for the Spanish giants and said it will be a 'joy' to play for the club. 'I am very excited, I think it's a club where people's dreams come true,' Rashford said. 'What the club stands for means a lot to me as well and it feels like I'm at home, and this is a big factor in my choice. It's a family club people are comfortable here and it's a good place for people to show their skills. 'I try to make decisive actions and fast dynamic plays and I always like good football so I've always been a fan of watching Barcelona from a young age. 'It's going to be a joy for me to play here and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.' 'I am definitely full of excitement and hunger to go out and try an help the team win. 'They won so much last year and I can see the ambition is to do better than last year.
