Kolhapur administration removes 11 illegal structures from Vishalgad under heavy police security
In July last year, the fort witnessed violence between two groups over the issue of encroachment. There were restrictions for visitors to the fort located in Panhal tehsil of Kolhapur district. The restrictions were relaxed in the last two months.
The administration designated 158 structures on the fort as illegal. Last year, 94 encroachments were removed. Recently, residents removed five encroachments, and 59 encroachments are still there.
The occupants of the structures had moved a petition in the Bombay High Court.
"As per the state govt order, the encroachments were to be removed before May 31. There was heavy rain in the last couple of weeks, and as soon as the weather cleared, we initiated the drive to adhere to the deadline. The forest department removed 11 structures which had no legal stay of any sort from court. The residents cooperated with the teams involved in the drive," Sameer Shingate, sub-divisional officer Panhala told TOI.

The state govt has ordered removal of encroachments from forts before May 31 to ensure that their sanctity is maintained, and the followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj can visit the forts without inconvenience.
The forest department deployed a staff of 40, the revenue department deployed a similar number of staff, and there were 100 police officials on the ground. In total, around 250 people were involved in the drive.
"We had informed the occupants of the structures in advance, on Friday, that we were going to carry out the drive. For two days, we imposed restrictions. Now, a religious event is approaching in June, for which, after consultations with the police and other departments, we will impose the required restrictions," said Shingate.
The administration allowed visits to the fort between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm, beyond which no one was allowed to stay on the fort after the violence in June last year. A police chowki has been installed at the base to check the details of the visitors.

Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said Kanchan shared a provocative video on May 31 in a WhatsApp group titled Hindu Jagarana Vedike Kota. The video featured SDPI leader Riyaz Farangipete, who previously made inflammatory speeches. Notably, the same video already led to the registration of a case in Mangaluru. Despite being aware of the video's sensitivity, Kanchan allegedly posted it on social media, inciting communal disharmony and promoting enmity between religious communities, posing a threat to peace in Udupi. As a result, Kota police registered a case under Sections 196 and 56 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Kanchan, who was earlier granted conditional bail by the high court on June 28, 2023, in the 2019 double murder case, was explicitly barred from leaving Udupi district without the court's permission and from engaging in any criminal activity. Three JJMP ultras gunned down in Gumla
Gumla: Three operatives of Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a banned splinter outfit of Maoists, were gunned down by security forces in a firefight in Gumla on Saturday morning. District police officials said an encounter broke out between JJMP ultras and the security forces in Lawadag forest under Ghagra police station limits around 10 am. One AK-47 rifle, two Insas rifles, a country made gun were recovered from the slain operatives. Gumla SP Haris Bin Zaman said a police team initiated a cordon and search operation based on intelligence inputs which suggested that JJMP operatives had gathered in Lawadag forest to plan an incident. A team, led by Gumla sub-divisional police officer Suresh Prasad Yadav and consisting officers from Ghagra and Bishunpur police stations, began a cordon and search operation along with jawans of Jharkhand Jaguar, the elite anti-extremism outfit of Jharkhand Police, and the district police. Woman suffers injuries in ‘fuel' attack, both corneas affected
Ranchi: A 21-year-old woman sustained severe burn injuries in Kanke area on the outskirts of Ranchi on Saturday after she was allegedly poured with a flammable liquid, suspected to be petrol or kerosene, by an unidentified person. Immediately after the incident, chief minister Hemant Soren took to X and directed health minister Irfan Ansari, Ranchi police, and the Ranchi DC to investigate the matter and ensure the immediate arrest of the assailant and provide better medical facilities to the victim. The victim sustained severe injuries in both her eyes in the attack, and she was rushed to a medical facility in Ranchi, where she underwent treatment. Police said the victim was inside her home when the assailant barged in and attacked her with the flammable liquid. Talking to TOI, SP (rural) Praveen Pushkar said, "At first, it was assumed to be an acid attack, but doctors later confirmed it to be a fuel. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. We are waiting for the victim to be stable to record her statement. Only after that, the details of the case will be clear. Meanwhile, we are investigating the matter from all angles and are trying to nab the perpetrator." Ranchi-based eye specialist Dr Bharti Kashyap, who treated the victim, confirmed that it was a petrol attack. "She was attacked at about 1 pm on Saturday and was brought to my clinic around 3 pm. The upper layers of the cornea of both her eyes have suffered damage in the attack. The petrol has been washed off her eyes, and we expect that she will retain vision in the next two days. She will not need any surgery to get cured," the doctor told TOI. Expressing apprehension about the way the incident occurred, the doctor said, "The victim is about to get married soon and she was brought to the clinic by her to-be husband. They called the media and the police to the clinic, and the would-be husband claimed that she fell victim to a gang war related to some business dispute over the tendering of parking spaces," Kashyap added.
