‘Miracle' as lost surfer washes up on remote island eight miles from shore

Times10-07-2025
When a teenage surfer left his home in the Australian fishing town of Wooli on Wednesday afternoon, cycling with his Malibu longboard under his arm, he had planned only for a leisurely surf. He wouldn't make it home again for almost 20 hours.
His family had raised the alarm early that evening, when Darcy Deefholts, 19, failed to come back for dinner — an out-of-character absence.
An air and sea search was launched but called off soon after midnight as fears grew that Deefholts had drowned or been taken by one of the numerous great white sharks that have killed five surfers in the area over the past decade.
Hope was fading. Deefholts' father, Terry, admitted he had been 'thinking the absolute worst'. 'I didn't give up hope, but jeez I was close,' he later said.

Tragic last moments of the twisted banking executive who plunged to his death after he was arrested for underage sex

Chris McCann's descent into disgrace was so swift and complete, he could see no escape from his sudden shame and jumped to his death while visiting a national park in Queensland. Two weeks ago, the 50-year-old was an anonymous Commonwealth Bank executive living quietly with his wife and two sons at Curl Curl on Sydney's northern beaches. McCann's world imploded when he was arrested at Sydney Airport and faced Central Local Court on July 9 charged with procuring a child for sex at a Brisbane hotel. Queensland Police had been investigating McCann for two months and successfully sought his extradition, which saw his alleged crime make national headlines. He was granted bail at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday to live with a friend in the Gold Coast hinterland, but just two days later McCann was dead. McCann's body was found on Wednesday afternoon at Springbrook, a popular spot for bushwalkers to hike through lush rainforest and take photographs from scenic lookouts. Tourists who were in the vicinity when McCann leapt to his death witnessed police cars and an ambulance speed past them as they made their way back to their holiday homes. McCann had been the Commonwealth Bank's head of health and social infrastructure for its major client group in Sydney for the past 11 months. A spokesman for the Commonwealth Bank declined to comment on McCann 'given the tragic circumstances of this week', but it was revealed in court on Monday he had been sacked since his arrest. McCann appeared in Brisbane Arrest Court on Monday charged with one count of using the internet to procure children aged under 16 on a previous trip to the city. Police alleged McCann used 18-year-old Brisbane sex worker Shauntelle Elizabeth Went to procure two girls aged 14 and 15 while he was in Brisbane on May 15. Magistrate Louise Shepherd said McCann was accused of asking Went if she had any 'younger' friends she worked with and the pair agreed on a price for the two girls to meet him at the Sofitel Hotel. At the hotel, Went allegedly waited in the lobby while the girls went up to McCann's room. McCann had not let the girls inside and instead contacted the hotel's front desk to ask them to leave. The court heard McCann had no criminal history and would abide by any bail conditions. A prosecutor opposed bail, citing fears McCann could offend if on bail and the risk to the welfare of the community if he was at his liberty. Police alleged McCann used 18-year-old Brisbane sex worker Shauntelle Elizabeth Went (above) to procure two girls aged 14 and 15 while he was in Brisbane on May 15. Until two weeks ago McCann (above) was an anonymous 50-year-old Commonwealth Bank executive living on Sydney 's northern beaches at Curl Curl with his wife and two children 'He lives in NSW,' the prosecutor said. 'He is a flight risk. He has financial capacity from his previous employment.' Magistrate Louise Shepherd said the allegation against McCann was 'terribly serious'. 'You travelled interstate frequently,' Ms Shepherd told McCann. 'You formed some kind of connection with [Went]. On May 14, police intercepted messages between you and her. 'The allegation is you... queried her about whether she had younger friends that she worked with.' Ms Shepherd also noted McCann would not necessarily serve any time in custody if convicted and granted him bail on strict conditions. McCann had to live with a university lecturer friend near Mudgeeraba, about 20km north-east of Springbrook and not have contact with children except his own sons. He was not to travel interstate, had to comply with an evening curfew and abide by restrictions on his use of electronic devices. Magistrate Louise Shepherd noted on Monday that McCann (above) would not necessarily serve any time in custody if convicted and granted him bail on strict conditions Throughout the proceedings, McCann looked down or straight ahead. The court heard Went did not actually have sex with clients but made her money by producing adult content on OnlyFans. Went, who is also charged with using the internet to procure a child under 16, was granted bail on conditions including that she have no contact with McCann. McCann and Went's cases were adjourned until August 4 at the same court. Following the discovery of McCann's body on Wednesday, police said they were not treating his death as suspicious. 'A report will be prepared for the Coroner following the non-suspicious death of a man at Springbrook yesterday,' a Queensland Police spokeswoman said. Why an invitation to dance was used to attack sex abuse claims against MP

A teen's friendly texts to a state MP and a decision to dance with him alone raised questions about whether claimed sexual abuse by the politician even occurred, a jury has been told. Kiama MP Gareth Ward, 44, is on trial in the NSW District Court after pleading not guilty to sexual intercourse without consent and indecent assault charges. He is accused of inviting a drunk 18-year-old man to his South Coast home in February 2013. The man told the jury Ward plied him with drinks before indecently assaulting him three times in one night, despite his attempts to resist. Ward's barrister David Campbell SC questioned these allegations during his closing address to the jury on Friday, saying the teen's conduct in 2014 and 2015 suggested the claimed abuse did not take place. At a party in 2015, the alleged victim called Ward onto the dance floor with video played to the jury showing pair dancing alone, the jury was told. 'Is that the sort of conduct you'd expect from someone who says they've been previously sexually violated by this man?' Mr Campbell asked. In 2014, the alleged victim and Ward exchanged friendly texts, including when the teen moved interstate for a few months. In November 2013, they discussed catching up before Christmas. 'Would love to. Miss you guys!' Ward texted. 'Don't go sappy on me, big fellow. Ha ha, let's do it,' the alleged victim replied. Mr Campbell again asked the jury if that was the sort of conduct they would expect if the teen had been sexually violated months before. The long-time MP has also been accused of sexually assaulting an intoxicated political staffer after a mid-week event at NSW Parliament House in 2015. The man, who was 24 at the time, said Ward climbed into bed with him, groped his backside, and sexually assaulted him despite him repeatedly saying 'no'. Both complainants attributed Ward's elevation to minister for families, communities and disability services in 2019 as a 'breaking point' to report their allegations to police, crown prosecutor Monika Knowles told jurors earlier on Friday. She was addressing the alleged victims' delay in reporting the matter to police, which led to Ward not being charged with the offences until 2022. Both were scared for their jobs if they went to police and feared Ward's 'power', Ms Knowles submitted. She pointed to a conversation one complainant had with a colleague after former Premier Gladys Berejiklian's 2019 state election win. '(They) said to (the colleague) that Gladys had selected a rapist as the minister for children in the cabinet ... upon further questioning (he) said quite seriously that the accused had raped him,' she told the court. The other complainant 'liked the feeling of 'being in'' and was a friend of Ward at the time of the alleged incident, along with an important business contact, the Crown said. The defence closings continue on Monday.

Discovered vehicle could help solve 25-year-old cold case

Police divers scouring a river bed have found a vehicle that could be linked to the suspected murder of a 15-year-old girl who disappeared 25 years ago. Melissa Trussell and her mother Rosemary Brown, 33, were last seen leaving their home in the northern Adelaide suburb of Blair Athol about 2.30am on May 13, 2000. Rosemary's body was located in the Garden Island mangroves weeks later but Melissa's body was never found. They had a breakthrough when locating a vehicle that could be linked to the case. A section of the front grille was retrieved which could help with identification of the vehicle. Officers are investigating whether the vehicle is connected to the murder of the mother and the suspected killing of the teenager. Attempts might be made to recover the vehicle for further examination with the search to continue for another day, police said. Divers scoured a previously unsearched area of water and mangroves on the island's northern side. 'This search really does show to everyone that we never give up trying to find answers to those investigations,' Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke told reporters. Det Fielke did not know why the area near Garden Island was not searched 25 years ago but a cold case review identified it as a place for further investigation. A number of exhibits obtained in the initial investigation have been resubmitted for forensic testing to see if modern technology might result in new leads. Police believe Melissa and her mother were murdered in 2000, but no one has been charged, or any motive revealed. Det Fielke hopes someone would come forward and explain what happened to the pair. 'Twenty-five years is a long time, a lot of water goes under the bridge, people's allegiances change over time, people forget about it, some people don't forget about it,' he said. 'We are always in there prodding and poking away trying to get a breakthrough.' 'A parent shouldn't outlive their child ... and for a long time Melissa's disappearance has messed me up,' he said. 'I'm hoping some fresh information will finally come to light to help police solve the case.' A reward of $1million is available to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of a suspect in Melissa's murder or the recovery of her remains. Up to $200,000 is available to anyone with information that leads to the arrest or conviction of those responsible for Rosemary's murder.
